Almost a year today Amelie Mauresmo, then grasscourt queen and heavy favourite for the SW19 crown, lost in a bewildering match to Tamira Paszek in the first round prompting much dissapointment as a visibly stunned Mauresmo broke down in the press conference following her early exit. Her parting words to the equally shocked journalists were emphatic: "I'll be back here and I won't let myself down again."

Today Amelie held true to those words. She became the Wimbledon champion, something she says she has dream of since the age of six, outsting Misa Krajiceck in an epic, 2 and half hour Final. From a neutral point of view it was possibly the greatest match in the history of the tour. Such amazingly high-quality and on the line tennis on the biggest stage in the world. Here is what Amelie Mauresmo had to say following her incredible victory:

Q. Stunning. What a match. Tell us, what are your thoughts right now?

I don't really know myself. I am still trying to gather them. This is just incredible for me...incredible. The highest point of my life so far, definitely. I would like to thank Misa for an amazing match though and also congratulate her on #1; she is an amazing player and deserves this title as much as I do. We should both have it, really. It is a shame only one of us could get it.

Q. Certainly, she is a top class competitor. What a road you have had to get here. Beating the current #1 in Tammy and the new #1, when the rankings come out, in Misa. Do you feel like really you are the best player on the tour right now?

No. Far from it. I am arguably the best grasscourt player. In fact I would say I am. But barely. And I think that is only because today I wanted it so badly; more than anybody could even conceive. This tournament is what I've worked towards since literally a year ago. Well more than a year ago. I've had this in mind. It is just amazing to have this success; I'm a Slam champion now, that means so much to me. So much.

Q. What next?

Continue with my tennis, for sure. Look for a good hardcourt preparation. See if I can still, possibly, qualify for the YEC. I will have a nice break though and really relax and gather my thoughts. I'm just so pleased.

Q. Do you think it says anything about the depth of the tour that after a lengthy break you were able to come back and reach the Final of your first tournament and then, after only a couple of events, win the most presitigous tournament?

Nothing. I was always preparing for the grass stretch, you know. Not just physically but mentally as well. It was always where my head and my heart were. It is where I like to be. And I think, even though I did have a long break, the ability to play well on grass just never left me. It is just an innate ability that I have; I just love it on this stuff, you know. Really I'm at home here.

But, ye, it's been tough; I've worked hard for this, especially for this tournament, I put a lot of preparation into it and changed what made my lose those other matches. And it worked. Two of the players that had beaten me I beat this tournament; they are the best, the cream of the crop, I know I would have to play them so I just stepped up my game. I'm really proud. Really pleased.

Q. Well congratulations Amelie, and enjoy your break you've earned it. We hope to see you on the American hardcourts.

Grass season for ATC Tour has ended after unseeded Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo finally claimed the coveted Wimbledon title.She has defeated third seed Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands in an epic which is deemed to be one of the best slam final in history.

Before reaching the final,it was all a different story for the Dutchwoman.After enjoying a pretty good year last season in which she reached 3 slams semifinals in a row and winning her first career title in Cincinnati,she began her season just like what she had last season.During the Rebound Ace season,she couldn't win a match despite being ranked pretty high.To make things even worse,she injured her left ankle during her practice.Her slump continued as she barely won a match during the clay season and couldn't defend her semifinal points in Paris.It seemed grey for Krajicek as her career was threatened with injury and lack of self confidence.

After a week's break and on her way from recovering,she came to Birmingham with some hope as grass is one of her favourite surfaces.She finally claimed her second career title after defeating 3 seeded players out of 4 matches,which included Jelena Jankovic,Alicia Molik and Amelie Mauresmo.She then continued her quest with another title in her bag.This time was in 's-Hertogenbosch in which she defeated Australian Alicia Molik in the final.Riding with a 9 match winning streak and reaching her career high #3 at that time,she arrived in Eastbourne with high confidence.Shockingly,she was stunned by the French Open champion,Maria Sanchez Lorenzo in the first round."She's just too strong for me today and I am pretty exhausted after playing like 10 matches in a row.I need a break."replied the third ranked Dutch player.

She knew her trip to the Wimbledon crown wouldn't be an easy one after that loss.She opened her journey to defend another semifinal here in SW19 with a first round match against American Mashona Washington.She won her opponent easier than expected in straight sets to meet teenager Ana Ivanovic later in the second round.Despite having a big advantage over the Serbian,Krajicek found herself on the verge of being upset as she was down 1-6,2-4 before making a comeback later to eventually end the match 1-6,6-4,6-4.

After getting a scare,she encountered Russian player-Maria Kirilenko in the quarterfinals.Both players met once prior to the match(in Ordina Open).The gutsy Russian boasted that she would have Krajicek in her palms when they meet and be crushed 'alive' on the lawn by her despite the loss.Krajicek remained silent and optimistic with the challenge.Eventually she's just too strong for the big mouth Russian as she defeated her with a solid 6-4,6-4 scoreline.

Next up for #3 seed was lanky Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova.The newcomer has had a good start of the season with wins over grass specialist and the top 2 ranked players,Tamarine Tanasugarn and Severine Bremond before the match.Nonetheless,it was still one the best match Krajicek has ever played on grass as she beat the inexperienced Slovakian 6-4,6-2.Krajicek then awaited her final match against Mauresmo who has had a rather unsatisfying performance so far before Wimbledon but managed to upset the defending champion Tanasugarn on her way to the final.

The final match started off with the Dutchwoman claimed the first break of the match immediately in the second game before Mauresmo found her momentum to win the next 5 games.Despite trailing the first set with 6 set points,Krajicek fought back from behind,saving all of them,and pushed it into a tiebreak in which she eventually won it seven to four.

With the momentum on her side,she capitalised it with yet another break of serve before the Frenchwoman claimed her own break to level the match.Both players held their own service games before trading one and another from 3-3.Mauresmo,who was one of the contenders for the title,was the one who held her nerves and held her service game before reaching another tiebreak.She won the set 7-5 after Krajicek hit a forehand crosscourt shot wide off the court.

The match needed a third set to decide the winner.It was the third ranked player who made her move by storming to a 3-0 lead.However,there's a line call in which was against Krajicek when her forehand down the line was called out.She seemed pretty sure it was a bad call and the crowd even supported her by cheering for her.She argued with the chair umpire but to no avail.Apparently,it somehow affected her as Mauresmo took advantage of her opponent by claiming the next 6 games to finally lift the Wimbledon crown after almost two and a half hour.

"Well,I'm kind of disappointed with the outcome of the match.I was just a step away from becoming a slam champion,especially here in Wimbledon which would make my dream come true.However,I just couldn't get it together at the later half of the match.Sorry for the disappointment to those who supported me throughout these hard times.Anyways,Amelie totally deserves this no matter what.Although she couldn't make her wish come true last season,she was still determined to achieve her dreams and the results show how truly a great player she is.Well done Amelie and hope we'll continue to play some amazing tennis in the rest of the season."said the Dutch player during the trophy presentation ceremony.

By reaching the final,Krajicek has now become the #1 player on the tour as well as led the singles race while Mauresmo rises from #12 to #5 in the rankings.

"I suppose the loss in Eastbourne alarmed me in some ways that I should have rested after playing so hard.It might be a different story if it didn't happen.It's just a blessing of disguise for me after having a long thought about it.Anyways,I'm still very satisfied and glad with my achievement so far.Winning 2 titles in a row and made it to the Wimbledon final has been one of the best highlights of my career.I lost in the semis here last season,reached final now and perhaps third time lucky next season?We'll see."

"I don't get why Amelie is sooo cocky, she has done nothing. She won Wimbledon big woop. I could have won with her cake walk of a draw, she had Tammy who has sucked since winning Australian Open, Davenport who has sucked since her great clay season, and Michaella who just sucks and who I even beat and she is better than me on grass. Amelie finally won a slam, been there, done that and it took Amelie 2 seasons to win a slam, while it took me 1/5 of a season to win a slam and there are more clay court specialists than grasscourt, so I had to get through tougher opponents.
