Preview: Golovin is coming off a great week last week which saw her win the inaugral OWTT event. Dulko, Venus and Demetieva alo put in strong showings. Can one of those big four go away with the title? Will one of the other players from last week learn from their mistakes and step up to win the title? Or could one of our newcomers come along and cause a stir with some upsets? This event is shaping up to be hotly contested as it is the first Tier I stop, and is the last tournament before the Australian Open, so people will be wanting to do well here to gain a seeding at the Open.

After a strong showing at the Gold Coast event, Venus Williams of the United States, is looking to keep the momentum going into the season first big event.

A: Yeah, I'm about 90%. I still have the cruds, but I should be over that in a couple of days.

American tennis player, Jennifer Capriati, is making her OWTT debut here this week in Sydney, and couldn't be happier.

"The weather's great here, the people are great, and I'm just over the moon to be here," said a gracious Capriati as the mayor of Sydney presented her with a commemorative Fila jersey to mark her arrival in the famed city.

The tournament begins tomorrow and Capriati will be working hard to make her mark. "A lot of girls started last week, so they've got a bit more experience than I do, but I've got what none of them have - me."

Young Russian Maria Kirilenko will make her debut on OWTT tour in Sydeny, and she will face Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova in her maiden match, she trained so hard to be on top, and she already said that she is confident on it!

"Yeah!! I think joining this tour is exciting, because we got many great players here now!! And i can compete with them, it feels great!! I definately will go for my first match, because you know, everything needs a good start, and i pratise all days. I think Daniela will be a tough oppoment as she has good forehand, haha, me too!! And she has great angled-shot, she has much more experience than me, but i hope i can do all the things right in this first round match!! I am looking forward to it!!"

Maria will also play doubles with fellow Russian and world number 3 Elena Dementieva, they will face Chakvetadze/Hantuchova in the first round. "Yeah!! Playing doubles can really help my singles performence, and i am lucky to have great partner like Elena, she can teach me so many thing because she is a great player, i hope we can enjoy our partnership!!"

Serena Williams had real trouble to start her season well last week in Gold Coast. She went out in first round of both single and doubles event and didn'T forget to bitch all her opponents before leaving this tournament.

This week is a new one, there's a new tourney, Serena has new opponents and mainly: Australian Open is coming really quickly... But is Serena really ready for the first GS? Is she ready for the new season could even be a serious question!

Serena has been seen by some paparazzi, yesterday, in Sydney downtown hanging with one of her good friend, an ancient contestant of America's next top model. This is something Serena got us used to, but what is even more suspiscious is that, Serena hasn't been seen training of all the weekend, with neither of her father, her sister Venus or her doubles partner Aravane Rezai.

We know Serena we'll be there to play her first round match, but will she really show the talent she really has or come totally unprepared and just hope that her talent does everything for her... most probably the second option, but let's hope she still gives us a great show...

After making it to the quarter finals if gold coast on her debut, she sets sights for a title this week in Sydney. She lost in the quarter finals to the eventual champion Tatiana Golovin in a three setter, after being down 5-0 in the second, she showed that she has a fighting spirit and went on to win 7 games in a row to take it 7-5.

Her first opponent in Sydney will be wildcard Martina Muller. The first seed she could meet is the number 3 seed, Elena Dementieva in the Quarter finals, she could meet last week's finalist in the Semis and also one of the only 2 people who beat her, Jelena Jankovic. She is set to meet Golovin in the finals if they both make it all the way there.

In the doubles, she is again, pairing up with Australian favourite Samantha Stosur. They are the number 2 seed after making it to the finals of last week's event.

It was a pretty good debut last week.
Yeh, it was okay, I wanted to do better, but losing to the champion feels okay. I had a pretty good result in doubles making it to the finals. So yeh, it was pretty good, I'm seeded here, so that's a nice thing.

Do you think you have a chance of reaching the finals here, maybe even winning it?
Well, yeh, I believe I have the potential to do it. Ummm, it will be tough. I could face some tough people before I reach there.

Which people do you least like to meet before the finals?
Well, I wouldn't use the word "fear". But you know, Elena [Dementieva], Jelena [Jankovic] and Gisela [Dulko] is coming off a good week. But you know, there are some, well a lot of debutantes and you can never know what they can do. But Jelena has beaten me in the exhibition. So she will be a challenge if I have to face her. But not in fear of anyone, I'm going to do what I do best, try my hard and worry about my side of the net and not theirs.

How's that shoulder going?
It's going well right now, I haven't felt anything. But we'll see when I play.

Do you like partnering with Samantha Stosur?
Oh yeh, she's great, especially when you're playing in her country you know, with the crowd's support, really lifets your game up. Maybe when we get out of Australia, I will pair up with someone else. *laughter* No just joking, she's a great girl and I think we will pair up for the rest of the season.

I'm not thinking so far ahead of the future, we've only been playing for how long? 2 weeks now, and there's another 50 to go. So not thinking that far ahead, it hurts my head. *laughter*

Another newcomer, another winner! Amelie did really well here and dug dep at 3-6 2-5. I think losing that second hurt Schnyder's confidence a little, allowing Mauresmo to pull through late on in the third. Good match!! :)

Serena hits a forehand in her first round match against Shahar Peer

During last weekend and the beginning of this week, Serena Williams was seen hanging out in Sydney, partying with her friends in stead of giving it her all in training to be ready fo this week tourney. Serena probably wanted to forget her last week's losses...

When Serena got on court today, it was evident that Serena had hit almost no ball during the last days. Serena makde Shahar play, she wasn't going for the big shots at all, and it raelly wasn't enough. The Isreali player was having a lot of fun on court, hitting big winners on the little balls that Serena hit right in the middle of the court. In an easy first set, Peer won the first set 6-2.

In the second set, Serena showed some pride, she played her best tennis since the beginning of the season. It was high tennis quality coming from her, winner after winner, ace after ace... Shahar Peer also got frustrated as she could do nothing. After Williams took the lead 4-0, Peer simple tanked the end of the set, hitting 8 unforced errors in a row. Serena Williams tied the match, winning the second set 6-0.

The third set was the best one for the crowd. Serena wasn't ass whooping Shahar and wasn't palying horribly, just some average tennis coming from both players. Serena went up 5-2, both the match was definitely tighter than what the score showed. Shahar kept playing well, she broke Serena once and then hold but it wasn't enough. Serena served the match out with an ace on the "T" line! Final score was, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 in favor of Williams.

The American women left us her first comment after the match, "It definitely wasn't my best tennis, but I'm happy I got out of the court with a win. Peer wasn't acting always so great on the court in my opinion, she was kinda disrespectful by times... But no matter, I won, not with my best tennis, but I won!"

World number 1, Tatiana Golovin was upset in the first round in Sydney, by American wildcard Jennifer Capriati.Tatiana could never find her rhythm in the match as she fell in 2 sets 6:4,6:4.She wasn't very outspoken in the post match interview.

On a day of upsets, Maria Sharapova, the number 5 seed, has won her first match in Sydney defeating Wildcard Martina Muller.

Maria looked sharp at the beginning dropping 1 points in the first two games, breaking Muller in the first game and holding her own serve to love. It was then holds until 4-2, when Sharapova broke Muller's serve again to lead 5-2 and had the chance to serve for the set, but Muller gave it all she got and after 3 games of solid serving, Sharapova's serve was in trouble, she was down 0-40 but showed whhy she is the number 5 seed firing down an ace followed by 2 backhand winners and a service winner gave her the first set point:

In the début of the tournament Tier 1 of Sydney the Argentine Gisela Dulko conquered to the local Jessica Moore in 3 irregular sets: 6-1 0-6 6-1. Now , the number two of the world , will face the WC Maria Kirilenko in R16.

Now the Argentine takes a great possibility of staying as a number 1 of the world, since the current one I number 1 of the world, Tatiana Golovin, did lost her match of the first round against Jennifer Capriati.


" Today i played very well in the first set and in the third one, it was the first match of the year for her and she played a very good match " said Gisela about her match of today.
