HELLO OWTT fans! Today I played my first ever match on the OWTT and it was a toughie. I had to play World No.2 and No.2 seed Gisela Dulko in the opening round of the Medibank International.

Dulko reached the final of the Mondial Australian Women's Hardcourts last week on the Gold Coast and was obviously in some great form. I, on the other hand, opted to stay in Perth (my beautiful home city) where I trained under the guidance of David Taylor, the Australian Fed Cup Captain and AIS Head Coach.

TA (Tennis Australia) contacted me on Tuesday morning, telling me that I had been awarded a wildcard into the main draw here this week. I was really stoked...and I didn't want to let them down.

After having a practice session with Samantha Stosur this morning, I played my debut match on the OWTT against Dulko, under lights on centre court. It was a very nervous moment for me. Walking out in front of 10 000 Aussie fans, hereing your name announced and the crowd going physco...

I started off terribly. Dulko won the first four games in like 10 minutes, but towards the end of the set, I started to settle down. The crowd was a big help, but I still lost the first set 6-1. In the second set, everything I touched turned to gold. My forehand has cranking, my serve firing - I even hit some sneaky drop shots! Nothing Dulko did could stop my momentum...

But after claiming the set 6-0, I had little left in the tank for a third set. Dulko kept playing her defensive game, and I started to miss. As a result, I took my foot off the peddle and Gisela really took advantage. She is slight, but she was really giving the ball a good whack. In the end I lost 6-1 0-6 6-1...I was pretty disappointed, especially after the second set, but it was a great experience and I loved every minute on court.

So tomorrow, I play doubles with Nicole Vaidisova. We don't really know each other that well, but she had a win today and has a great game. Hopefully I can stay a little bit longer here in Sydney before heading down to Melbourne for the Aussie Open...

Safina Gets Past Salerni

Sydney-Australia. Being both beneficiaries of a WC the Russian Dinaria Safina imposed herself to the Argentinian Ma Emilia Salerni for 6-4 6-4 in 1 hr 25 minutes.
The match was very fought but for Salerni's mistakes the Russian young woman was the winner of the duel. "She's a tough player; but I wasn't just fighting her, I was also fighting against everything," Safina declared,My shots were flying everywhere. I didn't like anything today. It was hard, but in the end I picked myself up. It's important to me to show my best performance. I'm very happy to have won today.

This one is the beginning and end of the tourmanet for Maria Emilia .

Another newcomer, another winner! Amelie did really well here and dug dep at 3-6 2-5. I think losing that second hurt Schnyder's confidence a little, allowing Mauresmo to pull through late on in the third. Good match!! :)

Kirilenko hustled well in the second set to get it back to 4-5, but Dulko was too strong. The second set was all about Kirienko, but by 3-3 in the third, Kirilenko seemed to run out of steam as Dulko eased to the victory in the end. Dulko is continuing her great form from last week and looks like it will take a great performance to stop her

Great fight from Serena here. She looked on her way out at 0-6 1-4, but smashing her racquet and getting out a fresh one seemed to give her a new lease of life, playing some sublime tennis to sneak the second set. :worship: Such a tense match- best so far on OWTT!! Caro would have won in straight sets had CT been other way, so didn't affect result. This just shows how close Chaky was to the win- she just couldn't close out the third, and had several match points in that breaker. A few tweaks and she will do well next week I'm sure. Another epic match ends with a third set tie-break. Both women played so well throughout, it seems a real shame that one of them had to lose. There was absolutely nothing between them in that third set, but Capriati stepped it up in the tie-break and goes on to the quarters. A few changes and Davenport could be dangerous next week. Capriati Enjoying Successful Tour Debut

"I can't believe it, I just can't believe it," said an ecstatic Jennifer Capriati after defeating fellow American Lindsay Davenport 6-3 4-6 7-6(4). The American tennis player is making her tour debut here in Sydney, but already there is a lot of buzz about the powerful American.

"I've seen her play, and it's pretty incredible," said an awestruck Mary Carrillo. "Just watching her fight for every ball. It's nuts."

"Tennis is what I love to do most, and it's great to be doing so well," exclaimed Capriati. The quarterfinals are up next, and Capriati hopes to keep up her winning ways.

Sharapova Sinks in Sydney

Maria Sharapova lost her second round match in Sydney today against newcomer Dinara Safina, but says that she's not surprised with the result. "She's new, you know, you don't know what you can get from her, so I'm not surprised. She could be dominating soon, so you never know."

Sharapova started out well winning the first three games to lead 3-0 but Safina broke back to take next 6 games to win the first set 6-3 when she hit a forehand down-the-line winner.

The second set started the same, with Sharapova winning the first two games and Safina breaking back again to take the next 6 and move into the Quarter finals with an impressive 6-2 6-3 scoreline.

Sharapova will now be focusing on the doubles when she starts her campaign tomorrow with Samantha Stosur, who got a bye in the first round. They will face, another Australian Jessica Moore who partnered up with Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic.

Tough loss today.
Yeh, of course, no one likes losing, but you know, no one is perfect and you can't win every match. So, I'm just going to work on it before the Open, you know, I want to do well there.

Are you going to work on your tactics a little bit?
Yeh, well of course, everyone who lose a match, they will try to look for things they are doing wrong, so they can fix it up.

How were you feeling when you were, like, almost losing, at 6-3 5-2?
I feel the same like I usually do. You know, it's "typical Maria" to make a comeback. So it doesn't surprise me that I was down.

I wasn't really into the match, it was just like... I'm not sure how to describe it, but I was just not out there.

You did well in the doubles last week--
Yes

--Do you expect to do well here also?
Well, I "want" to do well here. But with all the newcomers, you don't know what they will bring to the plate you know. So it won't surprise me if we lose to early on. But the main thing for us is, singles or doubles, is to work on our tactics for the Open. It's hard to do that, you know, when you win a tournament, because you think you're dominating, but you know, the next tournament you could lose in the first round, but it's always good to win, it's a good feeling.

First doubles match against Jessica Moore and Nicole Vaidisova, talk about that a little bit.
Well... what is there to talk about, I'm playing against Jess [Moore] and Nicole [Vaidisova] *laughter*

How do you think you're going to go?
Well, you can never know. They're a new team and you can't ever know what they can do.

Is it hard playing against someone in their own country?
Well, it's not "hard" but it's tough, you know, especially when the crowd is never on your side, but right now I'm not worried, I have Sam [Stosur] and the crowd probably knows Sam better than Jess, so that's a plus *laughter*.

But, as I said before, it's not hard but it's tough, just like if you were playing in your own country, it must be harder for your opponents.

--have you done anything in Sydney other than tennis?
Yeah, I went to the Opera House, the city and it's great, I took a lot of pictures and I went out shopping.

Do people in Sydney recognize you?
Yeh they do, seeing as how I'm 1.88m tall. *laughter*. Yes, some of them do. Some people just come up to me to get my autograph and photo. But it's okay, it's cool. I love Sydney

Are you considering moving to Sydney, after you finished with the game?
Ohh yeh, of course, I love Sydney, I love Australia, I love the people, they're all so nice and supportive.

Focusing back on tennis, what are you going to try to improve for next week?
My serve was a little bit wobbly today, so I will work on that. And I'm just going to work on everything, you know, you can't just focus on one thing and forget about the rest.

Serena Williams struggled to find her game today!

After showing some of her best tennis against Shahar Peer yesterday, Serena Williams had to play against another wild card in second round. Her opponent was Nathalie who won upseted the 5th seed, Jelena Jankovic, in her first round match.

This match probably wasn't really exciting for the fans, excepted for the second set. The first set was really one-sided as Natalie Dechy showed her yesterday's great form and gave bagel to Serena Williams who was, on her side, struggling to do anything. Dechy won it 6-0.

The second started similarly to the first one, Dechy went up 4-1 and looked like she was going to win an easy match but Serena had no intention to be humiliated by a new-comer. Serena changed her tacket before going back on court and started a new match. She was hitting the ball so hard and so well, she won four straight games but couldn't close out the set on return at 5-4. She still found a way to not a play a tie break and won the set 7-5.

The third set was kinda boring, but still impressive to watch as Serena was making simply unbelievable shots. Dechy got bagelled and got out of the court in tears.
Williams won 0-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Q: Serena, what was going throw your mind when you were down 0-6, 1-4?
S: Was I down 0-6, 1-4? (laughter) I donn't really look at the score really much when I'm losing... but I just know that in a change over in the middle of the second set, I changed my racket and just told myself "Serena, you gotta play better, just play like if it was a whole new match and forget the rest" That work out prety well!

Q: What did you think of your opponent?
S: She's a smart player, she knew I was struggling with everything, she was keeping ball in play and waiting for the error, but I finally woke up. Her mental let her down really quickly.

Q: Your father left the court in the second set when you were near of losing, did it affect you?
S: It kinda gave me a slap in the face. My father always supports me and to see him leave was like, I knew I let him down.

Q: What's the match plan for the QFs?
S: Just play my game, start off strong and finishing it quickly!

Q: Are you anxious of palying doubles?
S: For sure, Aravane got a win in first round, I don't know what happend to her today.. I'm really anxious to team up with her again, she's such a nice girl!

Dulko wins both the CT's due to the articles she wrote last week. But it didn't make a difference in the end anyway. But, Serena needs to realise just how close she was to winning this match (just a couple of points away from 7-6 third set, and the whole tournament!!). A couple of tweaks and she could definitely cause some damage next week. Dulko moves on to her second straight semi and is marking herself as the woman to beat right now.

Vaidisova Digs Deep To Reach Sydney Semis

Although coming into the match full of confidence Nicole Vaidisova came out very flat in the match. Her serve was failing her and she just couldnt find her game. With Vaidisova double faulting and spraying forehands left and right Capriati took advantage and quickly went up 6-2,4-0 in the opening set. It was at that moment that Nicole looked into the stands and saw her favorite actor, Russell Crowe. Although playing nowhere near her best Vaidisova dug deep telling herself she just had to find a way to win. She won six straight games to win the set 6-4. Nicole refused to lose in front of her favorite actor, Russell Crowe or her boo Radek Stapanek who was also in the stands. Although she was broken to go down 3-0 in the third Vaidisova stayed clam and only broke one racqet as opposed to the 15 she broke in the first two sets. Vaidisova stepped it up dominating Capriati with her big forehand and remaining patient to claim the vitory 2-6,6-4,6-4. Vaidisova will next face Agnes Szavay. When asked about her semifinal opponent Vaidisova replied, "I'm hungry for some Hungarian."

At least me and Anna are still in the doubles, and that is a great help, as Anna is a qualified masseusse. Argentine Gisela Dulko is in the semifinals in Tier II Sydney winning against northamerican Serena Williams in 3 sets : 6-0 0-6 6-2. Now Gisela will face Russian Dinara Safina for one place in the final.

If Gisela wins her match of Tomorrow will be the number 1 of the world for first time in her carrer.

" Well , i am very happy wit this result but also i am very tired. I played 7 matches in only one week

Sharapova, Stosur in Sydney Semis

Stosur and Sharapova started their doubles campaign today.
After recieving a bye in the first round, they had to face wildcard Jessica Moore and Nicole Vaidisova. The pair started out very well. Both serving fantastically and returning very well.
They held 3 times and broke 3 times take the set 6-0 and blow their opponents of the court.

But the second set was a different story. After winning the first set comfortably , they didn't play their best and lost that set 1-6.

The third was the same story, with them falling behind 0-5, but "typical Maria" shine out again and they went back to their 1st set forms. They took the next 6 games and was 6-5 up with Sharapova serving for the match. Sharapova aced twice and a backhand down-the-line winner set up the first match point. And another ace closed out the match. "They were simply too good, and have had more experince on the court. But we're still learning" when Jess was asked about the match.

They will now meet Anna Chakvetadze and Daniela Hantuchova for a place in the finals. They earlier beat number 3 seed and last week's semifinalists Gisela Dulko and Tamira Paszek.

Szavay came out the gate intimidated by the Vaidisova power game. Vaidisova took notice and quickly went up a double break to lead 5-1 and later winning the set 6-3. In the second set Nicole reverted back to the form that has cost her the opening set in each of her previous matches and received her first bagel o the tournament. After a bathroom break following the close of the second set Vaidisova regrouped and easily won the third 6-1 set and the match 6-3,0-6,6-1.

You got up a double break but seemed to have a brief lapse of concentration after going up 4-0 and 5-1.
Well Agnes wasn't playing very well and her bad play caused to me start playing badly but after a few games I got back on track.

Your game went complete off in the second set. What was going through your mind?
Well I was able to bring out my best tennis in the second set and my opponent hit a lot of lucky shots. With out those I probably could've won in two.

Your next opponent is Dulko. What are your thoughts going into the match?
Well she doesn't have any particular weapon. I feel like the match is in my hands, so unless I'm having one of those matches where I cant keep a ball in court I feel like I should be okay.

You've had the crowd supporting you throughout the tournament. Has that helped?
Yes definitely. I played doubles with Jessica Moore, which is probably why there has been so much support and it really helped me to regain my composure in the third set today.

After their first week together as a team, the two ladies are excited about their chances at Melbourne. Moore and Vadisova played some great tennis to reach the quarters at Sydney and were painfully close to upsetting the number 2 seeds, Sharapova and Stosur. After winning the second set Moore and Vaidisova raced to a 5-0 lead in the third. Unfortunately during the sixth game of the third set Moore injured herself reaching for a volley and the rest was history. The two went on to lose the match 6-0,1-6,7-5. Moore who flies to Melbourne today is hopeful that she will be 100 percent for the doubles event at the first slam of the year. Vaidisova also feels that her singles success at Sydney has increased her confidence and will ultimately help her in doubles. If the two can conjure up the form they displayed in Sydney come next week they will certainly be a force to reckon with.

Maria Sharapova and Samantha Stosur has reached the doubles finals of the Medibank International in Sydney and will be a repeat of last week's finals against Ivanovic and Schnyder, where they lost 6-2 6-0. They are looking forward to it, and looking forward to getting revenge on them. Sharapova and Stosur are looking sharp in their convincing 6-1 6-2 win over Anna Chakvetadze and Daniela Hantuchova.

They started well, serving well and returning even better. They took the set 6-1.
The second set was the same story but Chakvetadze and Hantuchova got one more game than the first set. It was a battle in the end though, Sharapova was serving and found herself 15-40 down. But she stepped it up another gear and took the next 2 points to bring it back to deuce. There was then 5 deuce when both pairs wouldn't give up, but Sharapova finally aced Hantuchova on the 3rd match point. With the delight of the crowd, they are into another final.
