Sharapova Boots Up For Bogota

This week, Sharapova will play her second tournament in Bogota. The top seed in the tournament will be Anne Keothavong, Gisela Dulko seeded second, the third seed will be Martina Hingis and rounding off the seeds will be Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin. Sharapova will play Radwanska in the Round of 16 and could meet Gisela Dulko, the second seed, of Argentina in the QFs.

Sharapova just came off a bad week on her debut, with an injury already. Sharapova was up 6-4 5-4 in the final qualifying round of Antwerp but her back problems kicked in and she lost that match 4-6 7-5 7-5. Sharapova also had a bad day in the doubles tournament partnering Caroline Wozniacki, they lost in the first round of the main draw 6-1 6-2.

Hi Maria.
Hi.

You didn't have a very good start to your EWTA debut did you?
No, you know, it was very disappointing, my first week and winning only one match and then lost because my back was hurting. It was hurting so much I couldn't chase the ball you know.

How is your back now?
Well, it's getting better. I can play but I still see the therapist and I'm still getting it treated to prevent any injuries. You know, I just want to forget about last week and play my best in this tournament. This is my debut, this is where it starts for me.

What do you think of the game and the guys who run the game?
Ohhhh.. this game is great. It's different from other ones. I like it because it's mostly luck, where you put your points, whereas most of the game, you have to distribute points and it's a bit harder since I'm not that good at match *laughter*.

What do you think of your first match?
ummm... is it against Agnieszka [Radwanska]?

Yes.
Well you know, I don't know anyone yet from the tour, but she's young, she has good tactics. But I know that I can beat, I can beat anyone if I just play my best.

What would winning your first match mean to you?
Oh well. It would be good to win, but you know, you can't win everything and you have to take it one match at a time. And I'm just going to focus on the match and see how it unfolds. But if I win that would be great, if I win the whole tournament, that would be better. Since I haven't won anything at any other games *laughter*.

How do you usually celebrate a win?
Like win a match or a tournament?

Both.
Well, every night, whether I win the match or not, I would go out to dinner, it depends. But as I said before I've never won a tournament so I don't know what it's like.. But I'm sure if I win a tournament, I would go out drinking all night *laughter* no just joking.

What do you mean by "depends"
Sorry what?

When you say you go out to dinner it "depends", depends on what?
Ohhh.. *laughter* umm well it depends on whether I win or not, you know, if I win, I want to eat the healthy food that would be good for me, or maybe go to a restaurant. But if I lost, I would USUALLY go buy McDonalds for a Big Mac or maybe Taco Bell, you know, like indulgence food.

Just one last question, how do you think you will go this week?
Umm well.. I would like to think that I would do well. Winning two matches may be good. But like I said before 1 match at a time and this will be my official debut.

Serena Williams has stated that she is ready for her first event of the season in Bogota. Many big named players have showed up here due to rankings, but many are just looking to get in some match play and see what everyone esle is bringing to the table.

"I happy to be here in Bogota playing tennis first of all. Just because this is a lower tier event doesn't mean that we are inferior players or anything. It is still a sanctioned EWTA women's event, and we all have to win the same amount of matches in order to obtain this title as the players would in Doha. So I really see no difference, except in points and prize money.

So once again I'm glad to be here with my friend Lindsay Davenport and I hope that we both do well here at this event."

Sharapova wins First Title in Bogota

Sharapova has won her first title (doubles), and on clay :eek:. She partnered up with clay specialist Francesca Schiavone. To get to the finals, they had to overcome, number 2 seed, Martina Muller and Anna Keothavong, and in the semifinals, the number 4 seed Serena Williams and Ana Ivanovic. In the finals they faced the number 1 seed, Agnieszka Radwanska and the number 1 doubles player, Tatiana Golovin. They won 7-5 7-5 when Sharapova aced Golovin.

Maria's partner Francesca [Schiavone] also did well in singles, getting to the finals losing to Nicole Vaidisova in three sets.

Interview with Maria Sharapova

Hi Maria, congratulations, your first title?
Yeh, thank you, my first title, hopefully one of many.

How does it feel?
Well I still have butterflies in my stomach, you know, it's so weird, like, I usually don't make it past the first round, but winning a title is just bizzare, especially, you know, I beat Tati [Golovin] who is currently number one. But it's a really good feeling. Oh and I want to also congratulate Nicole [Vaidisova] on her first win.

Clay is your least preferred surface, how did you manage?
Ohh well, I didn't manage really, it was all Francesca. She's great you know. And I really want to thank her for not pulling out of the doubles since she's doing so well in the singles. I couldn't have done it without her.

Are you going to continue the doubles partnership?
Well, I will see what I can do. But, you know, I have a friend on the tour, Caro [Wozniacki], I teamed up with Francesca because Caro and I weren't playing the same event. But I have to thank Francesca so much. But we might in the future.
