Svetlana Falters In Doha!

After such a great week at Paris[Indoors], Svetlana Kuznetsova was on top of the world. "Yeah, to blaze through the draw as a qualifier and to take home my first EWTA title was special for me." She went from having to qualify, to #9 in the world. But since her amazing run at Paris, "Sveta" has lost early in her last two tournaments to Daniela Hantuchova and Na Li respectively. "I really wanted to get some matches under my belt and today I guess wasn't meant to be. I realize that my tactic isn't going to work against everyone."

Svetlana also realizes that aside from her run to the Paris[Indoors] title, she wouldn't have any match wins this season! "[laughs]Without my run in Paris, I would be nothing. But this is still one of my favorite times of season. We are playing on the hard courts, hot conditions, and I will discuss my tactic with Andrew and hopefully I will make a bigger run in Dubai.[smiles]"

Seeds Get Slaughtered on Day One

The first day of the Qatar Open had everything from dramatic upsets, to stunning victories. With the top four seeds having round one byes, it was up to the lower seeded players to hold their own, however, in spectacular displays of atheleticism, the unseeded vixens of the tour dominated the seeded players, sending them packing. We'll go through each in a quick tournament wrap up.

(5) Victoria Azarenka vs. Venus Williams
Result: Williams def. (5) Azrenka 6-4, 6-4

This was a stunning match from Williams who is currently ranked 9th in the world. The former world's number one was playing with the same energy and fight that lead her to her first title in Gold Coast. Victoria seems to be in a slump as this is the second straight set first round loss for her in a row. Last week, Azrenka fell to Israel's Shahar Peer who is has the same coach as Williams.

In her post-match interview, a bubbly Venus Williams made some comments about some rumors on tour.

"Well I'm very glad that I won this match. I think I played very competitively and I'm very happy with how I played. Hopefully next week I'll be a seeded player again."

"There's been some rumors on tour that I am not playing doubles anymore. That's not true, I love competiting and the truth is, I'll be naming my new full time doubles partner later on. For the last time, I will be teaming up with Na Li. We had some good results last week so we thought we'd team up this week as well."

And joining us now, tennis commentator, Mary-Joe Fernandez! What are your thoughts on this match MJ?

MJ: This was a great match by the young Russian, Chakvetadze. She played brilliant tennis in the first set, just testing the waters before she dove in and she just dominated the second set. Very clean and consistant tennis and I think she has a great shot to do some more damamge here. She's definently one to look out for.

This was a great match played by both players but in the end, the young Chinese woman was able to pull off the upset. How did you feel about this match Mary?

MJ: Well you definently have to give Peng a lot of credit here. She went out on center court and just played beautifully. She's got a lot of power and she just chased down so many balls and forced Henin to play more and more points. However, Peng needs to work on getting the first serve in or else putting more on the second serve. Justine had a field day with that sloppy second serve and was able to come back a bit but the consistancy of Peng was able to stop her in just the right place.

This was a great match by the Israeli woman. She fought long and hard to rally past the eigth-seed who seems to be having major problems, this is her third consecutive round one loss. MJ what's your take on this match?

MJ: I think this was just the match of the day. I love the fight in the young Israeli woman. She ran down a lot of balls today but it was her brilliant shot making that kept her in this match. She had an outstanding 37 winners in the match, not counting her 5 aces. She's definently a young player on the rise and I think we're going to see a lot of great things from her.

We'll that's all we have for today. Tune in tomorrow to see how the top four seeds do in action. Will they continue their winning ways, or will they have the same fate as their other seeded friends? For Mary-Joe Fernandez and myself, we'll see you after round two!
