It's seems like the tour's more willing to experiment with doubles in hopes of increasing it's popularity. Just wondering if you guys were in favor of the current changes, or had suggestions for more changes.

View Full Version : Suggestions on improving doubles. Sir Stefwhit Mar 8th, 2008, 09:07 AM It's seems like the tour's more willing to experiment with doubles in hopes of increasing it's popularity. Just wondering if you guys were in favor of the current changes, or had suggestions for more changes. Sir Stefwhit Mar 8th, 2008, 09:08 AM I think that each team should be required to wear the same outfit (or at least the same colors), kinda like a team outfit if you will. I also think that each team should have a name that's not just the teams last names. I think it would be better if they took the first name that comes first alphabetically and the other players last name. So if Nadia Petrova and Meghann Shaughnessy were a team, the team name would be "Meghan Petrova". I know that sounds lame, but what it does is it gives the partnership a real identity. Instead of just two players together it would seem more like one team. So through the years we would have had: 'Serena Williams', 'Martina Shriver', 'Anna Hingis', 'Kuznetsova Navratilova'... :tape: Ok, maybe not the best suggestion, but it's a start. Any other ideas? stefi62 Mar 8th, 2008, 12:43 PM To me, showing it more on TV and advertising more on it would be a start. They could like, to begin with, sell to TVs the 4 quarters + one doubles match free, but that has to be shown. Maybe also they could put some doubles matches on center courts before the finals (example last year in Moscow or other tournaments...) And a WTA championships with more than 4 teams, cos that's really a shame that only the 4 best teams can compete. Flushing. Mar 8th, 2008, 01:20 PM I agree with the idea of wearing the same colours. Flushing. Mar 8th, 2008, 01:28 PM Some already do it, like the Bond sis, or Cara-Liezel who have a team contract with K Swiss, but it's difficult when you do not have the same sponsor.... It'd be interesting if all permanent pairs wear the same colours but nowadays it's hard to find permanent doubles. Although the top 10 (race) most of the couples play together one or two weeks and never again. Doubles was much more regular few years ago  dave. Mar 8th, 2008, 02:48 PM Firstly, go back to proper matches (no stupid match tie-breaks and have full length games). I like the outfit idea. The current WTA Championships format is ridiculous. 4 teams and just 3 matches? WTF?!?! It should go back to 8 teams. Show more doubles matches on the main courts and promote the top doubles players as much as the top singles players, so people know their names and something about them. Demska Mar 8th, 2008, 08:27 PM Get. Rid. Of. The. Super. Tiebreak. Tzar Mar 8th, 2008, 08:48 PM Agree Ollie.. And me and my partner wear saame shirts always.. :p. We got 2 pairs  esdee Mar 9th, 2008, 12:33 AM Revert to original scoring system, or, at the very least, have no-ad but a 3rd set, but certainly not no-ad AND a super tie-breaker:rolleyes: The WTA also needs to encourage the TV companies to show more doubles. What really frustrates me is when the singles matches finish early and instead of showing some doubles, they opt to show a re-run of a singles that's already been broadcast. At least BBC show quite a bit of doubles during Wimbledon with their interactive coverage. ● Vanilla ● Mar 10th, 2008, 12:17 AM play super-set (one set up to 8 games) with Ad scoring ? tommyk75 Mar 10th, 2008, 07:19 AM play super-set (one set up to 8 games) with Ad scoring ? I agree with this idea. It's a much better alternative than the the whole no-ad and super tie-break nonsense. It's especially annoying when the second set ends in a tie-break, and then they play the super tie-break right after that. Ugh. ● Vanilla ● Mar 10th, 2008, 06:13 PM or bring back Kournikova to doubles :hearts: LUVMIRZA Mar 16th, 2008, 04:58 AM Same dress for the team is a good idea atleast in GrandSlams and Tier Is. An increase in prize money will attract players more to play as teams and increased TV coverage will certainly help. Year Ending Championships with 4teams cannot be blamed, think if they have only 5 permanent teams playing that year and all others are temporary teams (wat can the organisers do??). They can do some TV programs that invite doubles teams to participate & do some game shows, interviews etc. |
