Alicia Molik's campaign starts against the Slovenian team and Andreja Klepac but if Molik is on form today it could be a short LA stop for their opponents * * * Polands Marta Domachoskwa will face the winner of the USA-UZB match in her first round. She will proboly start as favourite in either line up, though the seventh seed will have her work cut out if she is to play the Hardcourt Revelation, Lindsey Davenport. * * * Michaela Krajicek makes a return to the WTT tour this week after a long time out and will be hoping to get back to winning ways quickly on her favourite surface. She hasnt got the best draw, but she has the experiance to get past Wimbledon runner up, Tamerine Tanasugarn, who is yet to score a hardcourt win * * * San Diego Champion Elena Baltacha will hope to carry Great Britain to another title here in LA. The Britian starts up against Andrea Petkovic, who will face an upward struggle if she is to stage an upset here. * * * The number 4 seeds, Czech Republic have been the most consitent team on tour so far this hardcourt season, getting to both finals. Last week they lost to Britain and they week before to Slovakia, who are their first round opponents here. Its a tough task for both teams here and could go either way. A possible upset is looming. * * * Last Week, Japan added the Hobart title to their growing list of tournament victories but they are yet to take home a hardcourt title, somthing the number 5 seed, Ayumi Morita, will be trying to do this week. She first plays Kim Clijsters who is, like other teams, still struggling to find hardcourt form, * * * Israel have already played France once this year on Hardcourt and they ran away with a victory there and the unseeded team will look for more of the same here. and a good run in this tournament could enter them into the top 10 for the first time too * * * Finally, China, the world number 3 team and number 2 seeds here, play against the second qualified team, Croatia or Switzerland. The Chinese will start as favourites against either, as they attempt to get closer to the number 1 ranking again. Lindsay last week made the semifinals taking out 7th seeds Belgium and 2nd seeds China before losing to eventual champions Great Britain. In Qualifying, Lindsay took on top seed Maria Sharapova. Set 1, Lindsay used her massive groundstrokes to dictate play and move Maria around and won the set 6-1. Set 2, both used their big serves to hold serve until 4-4 where Lindsay was finally able to break Maria and get to serve for the match but Lindsay couldn't close Maria out as she fought hard to level it to 5-5. Maria was able to hold to take a 6-5 lead, but Lindsay also held serve easily to take it to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, it was ALL Lindsay as she powered past Maria 7-0. In the main draw, Lindsay had to play Marta Domachowska, the 7th seed from Poland. Set 1, both players held serve comfortably until 4-4 where Lindsay was able to break Marta after Marta made a crucial forehand error. Lindsay was able to close the set out with an ace to win it 6-4. Set 2, the wind started to pick up and effected both players serves as they struggled to hold as was broken until 2-2 where the players were able to get bakc on track and again start holding serve. Lindsay, like in the first set, got the break at 4-4 after an amazing forehand down the line winner to lead 5-4. Lindsay held serve quickly and easily to advance to the Quarters to take on #1 seed Australia, Alicia Molik. Lindsay in her interview said, "You know, I played twice today, both times playing well, this will help USA in rankings and my confidence. Last week I made the semis, now this week I wanna make the final. I wish Molik luck, but USA wants revenge for Standford. I also wish luck to the Williams Sisters who will play doubles." Hashim.
