When all seemed lost when they were done 2-0 after singles losses to world number 1 and Australian Open champ Maria Kirilenko and world number 9 Vera Zvonareva, but Russia showed they are a force to be reckon with reeling off the next 3 ties to defeat Argentina and move onto the Fed Cup semifinals.
Been done 2-0, the pressure was on Maria Kirilenko to keep Russia in it and she delivered superbly breaking Dulko's serve in the first game. Kirilenko never looked back as she held serve with ease with her baseline game too good for a stuggling Dulko. Dulko tried everything from serve-volleying and even moonballing but it didn't work as Kirilenko won the first set 6-4. Although Dulko saw 3 break points in Kirilenko first service game for the second set, Kirilenko never gave Dulko that oppertunity as she only let Dulko have 3 points on the Russian's serve as Kirilenko raced to a 6-4 6-3 win.
The pressure then shifted on Vera Zvonareva, the world number 9 who played superbly to defeat Paola Suarez in a nerve filled match. With the tie levelled at 2-2 it was down to the live doubles rubber featuring Russian pair of Elena Dementieva and Anna Chakvetadze playing Paola Suarez and Maria Emilia Salerni. Although the Russians dropped the first set 6-4 they rallied back to level it a set a piece with thrilling volleys from both girls. The crowd was ready for a close last set, but Chakvetadze and Dementieva didn't let that happen as they demolised the Argentians 6-0.
After the match the team captain, Maria Kirilenko said, "I am so happy and proud with our efforts today." "I was really annoyed about how I wasted my chances in my first match, but I feel alot happier with todays win." "I thought Vera, Elena and Anna played amazing and they did excellent." "Hopefully we can do well in the semis and hopefully progress to the finals."

A bubbly Venus Williams answers questions during a interview after she sealed the win against Central Europe by giving the United States an unbeatable 3-0 lead.
The United States has a lot to cheer about nowadays, the U.S Fed Cup team, made up of top ranked American, Venus Williams, and top 20 player, Bethanie Mattek, easily defeated their first round opponents, Italy by an outstanding score of 4-1. Williams dropped her second singles rubber against Francesca Schiavone. In the women's doubles match, the Italian team of Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta retired before walking out on court.
In their quarterfinal match-up against Central Europe, the Americans came out of the gates firing. Williams defeated Iveta Benesova in straight sets; 6-3, 6-4 and needed only 73 minutes to give the United States the 1-0 lead. In the second singles match of the day, rising star, Bethanie Mattek took down Martina Hingis in a close triple setter 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to give the U.S the 2-0 lead, which is what they wanted to have at the end of day one.
On day two of the quarterfinals of the Fed Cup, Venus walked out on the courts to take on Swiss Miss, Martina Hingis. In the beginning of the match, it looked like Williams would roll over Hingis like she did Benesova, however the crafty Hingis battled back from being down 0-3, and took the opening set 6-4. Williams turned up the heat in the second set, dominating with her massive serve and powerful ground strokes, the American took the second set; 6-2. In the third set, both women scrambled from all over the court, hitting amazing shots from all over, but in the end, Venus edged out Martina taking the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 and sealing the win for the United States 3-0.
During a post match interview, Williams who was very happy talked about the up and coming Gaz De France Open where she'll take on the world's number one, Maria Kirilenko.
"I think I played some amazing tennis over the past couple of days. I was 3-1 in my singles matches which is pretty good. It's nice to get some competitive matches under my belt before I go to France. Bethanie really stepped up her game when she needed and I really pushed up my game from what it's been lately so I'm very proud of our results. I think the United States has a good chance to win the Fed Cup with Bethanie and I playing. My thoughts on my against Maria Kirilenko in the opening round of France are simple. Bring it."
