Patch Feb 2nd, 2008, 10:23 PM Preview
World Number 1 Dellaqcua has a Bye
*
*
*
Israels Shahar Peer had a solid first harcourt tournament and will hoping to back that up here in San Diego. She plays last weeks no show, Tamerine Tanasugarn, who will hopefully play this week.
*
*
*
Both France and Germany lost in the first round last week so this is a good opportunity for both to get a run into a tournament. Germany have had the better runs in hardcourt tournaments but if you were to count on experiance you would tip Mary Peirce.
*
*
*
Czech Republic had a great week in Stanford and Kveta Peschke will be hoping to continue that for the world number 4 team. She plays Martina Hingis, who is still for that confidence boosting win on tour.
*
*
*
Number 4 seeds Great Britain have the ability to go a long way here and Elena Baltacha will hope to put the last few dissapointing weeks behind her. Her campaign starts off against Andreja Klepac, who has been slowly improving over the last few weeks.
*
*
*
Polands Marta Domachoskwa had a solid week last week and will be aiming to build on that here in Stanford. She opens up against Maria Sharapova, but the Uzbek hasnt played since Wimbledon.
*
*
*
America pushed Australia hard last week and they will hopefully carry the confidence through to their match against Belgium. Lindsey Davenport will be hoping to upset the number 7 seed, Kim Clijsters-Lynch, who will be looking for her first win in a while.
*
*
*
Finally, the world number 3 and number 2 seeds here, China, will be hoping to capitalize on a semi final finish in Stanford. Johanna Larsson is their opponent, but the Swede faces a big task if she is going to take down Na Li.

American team with USA flag(Morariu[ALT], Serena, Davenport, and Venus)
San Diego, California
Home crowd favorites win in Acura Classic. Lindsay Davenport in round 1 beat Kim Clijsters 6/7(0) 6/3 7/6(3) playing great tennis to make the quarters. Lindsay today had to play against 2nd seed and Chinese player, Peng Shuai on Centre Court. In set 1, Lindsay used her massive forehand to move Peng around the court to lead 5-3. Peng broke and needed to hold serve to level the match at 5-5, but Lindsay once again showed off her power to take set 1 6-4. Set 2, Peng kicked it off with a hold, but that would be the last game she won as Lindsay ran away with the match 6-4 6-1. USA, now with a new coach, have won 2 consecutive matches in singles, losing last week in round 1 to Dellacqua.
Lindsay in her post match interview said, "I am shocked, I played well and happy that I beat a great player in Peng. Baltacha in the semis will be tough, but if I play like I did today, I might win."
Davenport wasn't the only American to win as the Williams Sisters pulled out a doubles win over Sweden. In set 1, Larsson and Andlovic took advantage of their opponents doubles rust to get 1 break which was all they needed to win set 1 6/4. In set 2, Larsson and Andlovic got another early break to eventually lead 5/4 and have 4 MPs, but the Williams Sisters showed their fight and desire to take it to a tiebreak and win it 7-2. Set 3, was dominated by the Williams Sisters 6-3.
USA is now in the semis of both the singles and doubles events.

[3] CZE Kveta Peschke def. [8] ISR Shahar Peer 7-6(1) 6-2
'Its great to be in the final, Czech Republic have never won a title despite being seeded so high and I would love to be the player that does it. Shahar played a very good first set and thought back from 5-3 down but my greater experience pulled me through and she lost confidences after this and I coasted through the second set. In the final, I face Elena Baltacha from the United Kingdom team, she is seeded just below me so it should be a tight match but I am feeling great about my game'

Another title for Britain and this, arguably their biggest. Elena has had a fantastic week and will be one of the favourites for the USOpen this year for sure. Kveta was so close today (one points difference in the second set) but she has also had a great week. Im sure she will win that title the Czechs deserve soon.

After a high quality first set the rest was a little bit of a letdown but the Aussies take revenge for their singles loss here to the Israelis to take the title. Good tournament from them.
Patch Feb 10th, 2008, 09:39 PM Congrats to both winners :bigclap::bigclap: Ranks updated tommorow - new threads up tonight
