Last week in Gold Coast, we saw American, Venus Williams fight her way to winning the first title of the season. She battled past Flavia Pennetta, Vera Zvonareva and even defeated her younger sister, Serena Williams without dropping a set in any of her first three matches. It would take Anne Keothavong of Great Britain to take a set of the tennis titan. However, Keothavong's second set win was in vain because Williams clobbered her in the third set winning at love.

In the finals, Williams met up with Agnes Szavay of Hungary. After a thrilling 1 hour and 47 minute final, Venus emerged victorius, winning; 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. With this win, Williams would assume the world's number one position and be the first woman to do so.

"It's feels amazing to win the first tournament of the season. Agnes played a great match and she took a lot out of me." Williams replied bubbily. "I'm very proud that I rose my game to the next level with every opponent. I think that definently helped me win and I'm going to continue to raise my game. Who knows? Maybe I can win my second career title here."
