Here in Gold Coast, Australia, the Mondial Australian Women's Hardcourts tournament kicked off to a great start to the first season of the E.W.T.A. There were battles, beatdowns, bloodmatches and many more words that start with "B" in the first round. Let's have a quick overview shall we?

Sisterly Love

American sisters, Venus and Serena Williams both won their first round single matches. Venus, who took on Flavia Pennetta, pushed her way past the Italian to win the match in straight sets: 6-4, 7-5. Meanwhile, little sister, Serena had a little tougher road to victory as she posted a triple set victory over Maria Sanchez Lorenzo: 7-5, 6-7(2), 6-4. If both of the Williams sisters win their second round matches, we could see a clash between the family members in the quarterfinals.

Russian Royale

In the first round, we got to see two all-Russian matches. First up was Vera Zvonareva taking on Russian beauty, Maria Kirilenko. The two women battled back and forth for nearly two hours but in the end, Vera had enough stamina to take the win from Maria in three sets: 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. After blowing a chance to serve for the match at 5-4 in the second set, Vera seemed determined in the third to close out the match any way she could and got the break at 4-4 to go up 5-4 and serve out the maatch.

The second all-Russian match featured Anna Chakvetadze and Elena Dementieva. By looking at the pairing, one would think this would be a great match between the two. However, the great match was only for Anna who handed Elena a horrible loss after dominating: 6-1, 6-2. Chakvetadze only needed 68 minutes to finish off her countrywoman to advance to the second round.

Beat Down of the Day

And the "Beat Down of the Day Award" goes to Ana Ivanovic. The young Serb was literally manhandled by Frenchwoman, Tatiana Golovin who only surrendered one game in the entire match. Tatiana definently showed how much she wanted to win the match by overwhelming Ana with a scoreline of: 6-0, 6-1. Golovin advances into round two where she'll take on Belgian, Kim Clijsters. Alls we can say to Clijsters is good luck!

Home Crowd Favorite Outsed

Australia's hometown hero, Casey Dellacqua was outsed today by Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn in straight sets: 7-5, 7-5. The young Australian showed her determination but came up short against the more agressive Tamarine who advances into the second round to take on Agnes Szavay of Hungary. This being the first tournament of the season gives much more hope for Dellacqua to get her game down before the Australian Open where she is hoped to do well.

Qualifer Continues Winning Ways

Shahar Peer who won her qualifying match over American, Bethanie Mattek in three sets: 0-6, 6-3, 6-4, continued her winning ways with a straight set win over Slovakian, Daniela Hantuchova: 7-5, 6-3. The young Israeli woman need about an hour and 27 minutes to dismiss Hantuchova, but not before the Slovakian saved four match points and pushed Shahar to fight for the win. Peer advances to take on Marta Domachowska, who was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Virginia Ruano Pascual.

Lucky Loser Looses, Again

Russian, Maria Sharapova withdrew from the tournament due to a right ankle injury that reporters have told us she sustained running to the bathroom after eating bad nachos. After her withdrawl, it was announced that American, Bethanie Mattek would recieve a "Lucky Loser" spot in the draw. After getting a second chance, you would think Mattek would've made the most of it, however, she failed to do so. She lost to Anne Keothavong in straight sets: 7-5, 6-4.

Once again at the Mondial Australian Women's Hardcourt tournament in Gold Coast, Australia, we've seen amazing matches from those who have the drive and desire to become the tour's best. There have been marathon matches, miracles, chokes, and battles that went on for hours, but we've finally narrowed the field to the ellite eight. Only one woman can take the title, which will it be?

Serena Williams vs. Venus Williams

This is the most anticipated match of the quarterfinals and probably of the tournament. Both sisters have displayed their power and athleticism and have looked very fit while doing so which could be a bad sign to the rest of the players in the tournament who could be suffering from a little faituge due to the extreme heat conditions. While Serena has showed us she has the heart of a lion and has the ability to fight back, she's had back to back triple set matches. Venus on the other hand, has had back to back straight set wins.

Predicted Winner: Venus Williams in three sets.

Marta Domachowska vs. Anne Keothavong

Marta Domachowska has looked simply amazing in this tournament. She has yet to be tested by an opponent but that can all change when she's faced against the fiesty Anne Keothavong. Neither woman has dropped a set in their first two matches but Domachowska has more dominate scorelines. If Keothavong fights like she did in her first set against Bartoli today, she'll pose a threat. If she fails to do so, she could be the next winner of the "Beat Down of the Day Award".

Predicted Winner: Marta Domachowska in two sets.

Tatiana Golovin vs. Agnes Szavay

Unfortunately for Szavay, she has the bad luck to face Golovin in her first career quarterfinal. Tatiana certainly turned heads when she manhandled Ana Ivanovic in her first round match. However, Agnes is no pushover, she knows how to fight and stay alive in a match. Szavay will need to be aggressive from the very beginning of the match and she can't let up for a minute or else she'll be slaughtered by Golovin. If Agnes makes sure to use the best of her game she could potentially fight off Tatiana to reach the semi-finals.

Predicted Winner: Tatiana Golovin in two sets.

Margalita Chakhnashvili vs. Anna Chakvetadze

This will definently be one of the best matches of the quarterfinals. Both women have had dominate wins and have had to fight back to win after being a set down. Anna definently is in great shape as she showed in her first round match when she dismantled countrywoman, Elena Dementieva. But Margalita gave a beatdown to Agnieszka Radwanska; 6-2, 6-2. While both women deserve to be in the semi-finals, only one woman between them can advance and it will be tough to call. Chakvetadze needs to be aggressive from the very start and get a lead as soon as possible. The longer the sets, the more Margalita is favored due to her incredible stamina.

Predicted Winner: Anna Chakvetadze in three sets.
