Welcome to the prestigious WMFT Year-Ending Championships! It's the final event of the inaugural WMFT season, and it has been a great one! Last week, in the last grand slam of the year, we saw Elena Baltacha continue her solid hardcourt play, and Gael Monfils break through to the top of the game. But this week, only 16 players (8 men, 8 women) were invited, and it's sure to be the best tennis of the year!
Draw Size & Format:
8 Players, 2 round robin groups of 4
Top 2 from each group move on
Final 4 play in a single-elimination tournament
Winner from group A will play 2nd place from Group B in semis, and vice versa
Sending Points:
ALL PLAYERS MUST SEND ATLEAST ONE SET OF NEW POINTS
You may send points for each of your round robin matches and once for the semi/final.
All players will send 215 points
If one person fails to send points, they will be replaced by the first alternate (9th ranked player on YEC rankings)
If another fails to send, the 2nd alternate will replace him/her
Any questions, ask! Draws are posted (and feel free to praise me on my woderful draws, I am very proud of these ones  ). Good luck to everyone!

The Competitors
Amelie Mauresmo [1]
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41266000/jpg/_41266752_amelietrophy.jpg
Year In Review: Amelie Mauresmo has been WMFT's #1 player for 11 of the 21 weeks. She has a tour leading 5 titles, with wins at Gold Coast, Hobart, Eastbourne, and grand slam wins at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Lately though, she has really been struggling, winning only 2 hardcourt matches in 4 events. Despite this, you still have to consider her among the favorites for this title!
Current Record: 29-14 (67%)
Strenghts: Amelie's biggest strength is her variety. Her gameplan is built to beat all types of players, and there isn't really a type of player she loses to consistently. Also, if she makes it deep into tournaments, she is very tough to beat. If she can get out of the round robin, expect her to take the title, or come very close!
Weaknesses: Inconsistency. Amelie can be very inconsistent, and some weeks she may win the tournament then turn around and lose first round 3 times. However, if she is on, she is very tough to beat!
Predicted Finish: Champion
Elena Baltacha [3]
http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40736000/jpg/_40736215_baltacha.jpg
Year In Review: Elena won the tournament in week #7, but after that kind of went away... until this hardcourt season! She won 2 hardcourt tournaments (including the US Open), and made the final, semis, and quarters of the other 3. She has 3 titles this year, at Estoril, New Haven, and the US Open, 2 of which came the last 2 weeks! One of the best things about Elena's game is her consistency, she made the quarterfinals or better of the last 7 events!
Current Record: 31-14 (69%)
Strenghts: Her consistency is definitely her biggest strength. I think it will really help her in the round robin stage, and I think she should be able to get off 2 wins to make the semis.
Weaknesses: Her biggest weakness is how she plays against the big players. For as consistent as she is, she seems to fall apart against the big opponents. Usually, when she wins titles, she doesn't do it by beating more than 1 or 2 top players. This will really hurt her this week, as she'll be playing only top players!!
Predicted Finish: Semifinal
Sacha Jones [5]
http://aktennis.qsihost.co.nz/UserFiles/Image/Sacha%20action%201.jpg
Year In Review: Sacha is the least decorated of the top 4 women players, she only has 1 title (Amelia Island) and she never went past the quarters at a grand slam. Despite this, she still cannot be counted out here. She has shown in the past that she can beat all of the top players, and if she CHANGES HER GAMEPLAN she can do so here. Although she only has 1 title, she made 2 other finals (Gold Coast and Rome) and if she can find her form from the beginning of the year, she could very well spoil Elena's or even Amelie's semifinal plans.
Current Record: 21-19 (53%)
Strenghts: Her creativity, Although lately Sacha has been very inactive and boring with her game plans, she can get very creative. I think it will help her here to get to change gameplans, because she's very capable of developing a different, winning gameplan for each player.
Weaknesses: Her lack of commitment. Sacha has looked really un-committed to the game lately, and it has greatly affected her results. She needs to re-comit, and get back that form from the beginning of the year if she wants to have any shot at winning, or even winning a match!
Predicted Finish: Round Robin 4th place
Ashley Harkleroad [7]
http://www.futuretennisstars.com/images/players/Ashley%20Harkleroad.gif
Year In Review: It's probably surprising to some that Ashley is even here (she only made 1 tour final all year), but she has been really consistent lately. Players (like Sacha) are very inactive as of late, and Ashley has recognized that and has done what she needed to to qualify. She had a great hard court season (including making the US Open and New Haven semis). If I had looked at this draw earlier in the season, I would have predicted her to finish last hands down. However, with her wins over Amelie and Maria (Kirilenko) last week, she could certainly make some noise here.
Current Record: 21-20 (51%)
Strenghts: Her solid gameplan. Although you may not see Ashley go 3-0 here, she certainly has potential to win 2 matches. Her gameplan is very solid, it can beat top players but also beat lower ranked ones, and she (almost) always puts up a fight.
Weaknesses: Ashley's inconsistency can hurt her here. If the other players decide to show up, it could really hurt Ashley because she has a tough time beating the top players. Also, her inexperience could play a big factor. Like I said, she has only been to one tour final, and although she can be seen in the quarters and semis sometimes, she rarely gets those big wins over the top players that she needs to win titles.
Predicted Finish: Round Robin 3rd place

The Competitors
Sybille Bammer [2]
http://sportard.wdr.de/sp/tennis/news200706/01/img/01_bg_bammer_dpa_400.jpg
Year In Review: Sybille comes into this tournament in 2nd place for number of titles on the year, just 1 behind Amelie. She also comes in as the only other player to be ranked number 1, and if she can do well here she could regain that position for years end! She has won 4 titles, Sydney, Strasbourg, Stanford, and most importantly Roland Garros, and made it to 4 other finals! She had a very good hard court season, winning a tournament and making 2 other finals, but had a disappointing first round loss at the US Open.
Current Record: 30-13 (70%)
Strenghts: Sybille's biggest strengths are probably her experience and solid game play. She has been to more finals than any other player, has won a grand slam, and has been number one, so she certainly knows what it feels like to win (and lose) on the WMFT tour, so she's got an edge over some of the less-experienced players here. She also has a very solid game plan, one that can beat any player.
Weaknesses: At the same time though, her game plan can lose to any game play. I think her biggest weakness is her lack of variety. She seems to stick to a very basic game plan (why not, it's working!) but I think in a tournament where players can design points specifically for her, that can really hurt her.
Predicted Finish: Round Robin 3rd place
Maria Sharapova [4]
http://a.abcnews.com/images/Sports/532d1fcc-1b39-4196-be02-8ff08acb59ac_ms.jpeg
Year In Review: Maria had a very slow start to the year, winning only 1 rebound ace match and 2 on clay. She always had the potential to be a great player, but she didn't really break through until the grass season (where she made 2 finals and the semis at Wimbledon). Then, on the hardcourts, she played her best tennis ever, winning 2 consecutive tournaments, but unfortunately was upset in the 2nd round of the US Open. Sharapova was always one of those 'dark horse' players at every tournament, but then she really played well on hard to get her not only into the YEC but up to the 4th seed. If she can find her play from Week 19 she'll be VERY tough to beat.
Current Record: 22-18 (55%)
Strenghts: Her ability to beat top players. If Maria loses, it's usually to a low-ranked, early round opponent. But, if she can get to where she's playing the big players, she rarely loses. And, since this tournament is comprised entirely of top players, she hsould do well!
Weaknesses: Her lack of variety. Maria has a very good gameplan, but she seems very one-dimensional. When she loses, it's to a low ranked player, and it's because she doesn't seem to know how to adjust to play them. This tournament is all about having different gameplans for different opponents, and I'm not sure how good Maria will be at switching things up!
Predicted Finish: Finalist
Flavia Pennetta [6]
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41379000/jpg/_41379428_tennis_416.jpg
Year In Review: Flavia might be another player you wouldn't except to see here. She was really a quiet player that no one expected to do, well, anything, until Wimbledon that is. After making only 3 quarterfinals in 14 tries, Flavia came into Wimbledon and just blew through her opponents (players like Sharapova, Ivanovic), all the way to the final! On hardcourts for the first few weeks, she was again unsuccessful, but managed to make a Tier II final and then the semis of the US Open, and here she is!
Current Record: 19-19 (50%)
Strenghts: Flavia is a very smart player. Her gameplan is simple, but it's very effective, especially against the bigger hitting top players. I think it will really benefit her to be able to change plans (if she uses it).
Weaknesses: Inability to beat the big players. Although Flavia can be very consistent, she has a tough time beating the "big players" (with the exception of a few that she owns .) Flavia will have to use a lot of variety this week if she's going to win enough matches to make the semis.
Predicted Finish: Round Robin 4th Place
Lindsay Davenport [8]
http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40323000/jpg/_40323233_davenport_getty.jpg
Year In Review: Lindsay has really had sort of an average year. She won one title, in Newport. She didn't really have any major accomplishments on the tour, but she was very consistent, and has always been a dark horse in the tournaments. She made the semis of Week #19 and #20, and just played well enough at the end of the season to keep her in the 8th spot.
Current Record: 24-18 (57%)
Strenghts: Lindsay's biggest strength is her ability to beat top players. Although she has never really been at the 'top' of the WMFT tour, she has always been a threat to any and all of those that are. She is also a very smart player, and I think one that will do well here. She is able to do what she needs to do to beat her opponents, and can adjust her game very well to do so.
Weaknesses: Inexperience. Lindsay has only been to the finals of 1 tournament (which she won), and she hasn't made it past the quarters of a grand slam, so she doesn't really know what it's like to be on the big stages. Also, she can be a very streaky player, and if her game is not on this week it could be bad news for her.

The Competitors
Ivan Ljubicic [1]
http://cimg2.163.com/sports/2006/10/16/20061016215912a27ee.jpg
Year In Review: It's quite surprising, to me at least, that Ivan managed to finish number one in the YEC rankings. He was greatly helped by his US Open Series finish, and he had an incredible hard court season. He got as high as #2 in the world back as late as week #9, but fell all the way to #6 and remained there until week #19!. Ljubicic certainly is always considered among the favorites, but his surge at the end of the season was rather unexpected. He is a very solid player, and although there is a lot of pressure on him here (including the chance to finish the year #1!) I think he'll do well in this round robin format.
Current Record: 23-15 (61%)
Strenghts: Ivan Ljubicic is a very creative player. He really pays attention to how his opponents are playing, and does well to adjust his points to win. He knows what strategies are common, and develops well-designed ones to counter them.
Weaknesses: His inconsistency could be a problem for Ivan. He has been winning a lot as of late, but as I said earlier he can go through long slumps without even winning matches!
Predicted Finish: Champion
Nikolay Davydenko [3]
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u87/ldavenport24/71722451.jpg
Year In Review: Right from the beginning of the year Nikolay really came out showing that he would be a force on the WMFT tour. Like Ljubicic, he was helped out in his YEC standing because of his US Open series bonus points, and he moved up one seed higher than his actually entry ranking. However, Nikolay has shown lately that he certainly deserves that extra boost. His is 2nd on the list of most titles with 3 (Auckland, Barcelona, New Haven), trailing only to Nathan Healey.
Current Record: 29-16 (64%)
Strenghts: I think a big plus for Nikolay, especially in this tournament, is his confidence. A lot of the top players have been off of their game lately, but I think Davydenko is playing very well and consistently, and I think it will be to his advantage her. He's got more confidence than many players, and if he stays committed to winning this tournament I think he could develop winning game plans.
Weaknesses: Although it sounds weird since he has 3 titles, I think his inexperience could be a problem. Not so much his inexperience in tournament play, but in big matches. It seems that most of the time when Nikolay is making deep runs into tournaments, all of the top players are out (or most of them, and he only has to beat 1 or 2.) In this tournament, Nikolay will be playing nothing but big players, and it'll be interesting to see how he performs.
Predicted Finish: Semifinalist
Harley Radford [5]
http://www.tennis.com/uploadedImages/Editorial/General/2006_09_28_Shanghai_article.jpg
Year In Review: A surprising stat that I never realized about Harley is that he hasn't won a title yet this year! Harley can be a very streaky player. He hasn't really had multiple "good" tournaments in a row this year, or a good surface, but instead he manages to get to finals and semis here and there, enough to keep him at the top of the game. He made 3 tour finals (Estoril, Nottingham, and the Australian Open), and has made the quarterfinals of the last 3 tournaments.
Current Record: 20-20 (50%)
Strenghts: Harley is a very creative player. He develops very... interesting.. stratgies, that can either be very effective or crap! He seems like an intelligent player, and IF he is committed to this tournament he could really make a run.
Weaknesses: He is a very inconsistent player, and at the same time he seems very inactive as of late. He never seems to win a lot of matches in a row or have a few good tournaments, but rather makes the finals of a tournament only to turn around and lose 1st round the next 2 weeks. If he feels like committing himself to this tournament and sends 3 sets of well though out points, he should be okay.
Predicted Finish: Round Robin 4th Place
Nathan Healey [7]
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u87/ldavenport24/healey0.jpg
Year In Review: Nathan has had a very similar year to Harley, only he was more successful. Healey is one of only 2 players in the men's draw that can say he has been #1 in the world! He started out the year incredibly well, winning the first 2 tournaments and 8 matches in a row! He is the title leader on the men's tour, with 4 (Doha, Adelaide, Nottingham, Indianapolis). The only thing really lacking from his trophy chest in a grand slam title. Nathan has had an incredible year, but the fact that he has only made 1 grand slam quarterfinal has really killed his ranking!
Current Record: 26-16 (62%)
Strenghts: Although Nathan is very streaky, when he is on he is tough to beat. He comes up with very solid game plans, that are both effective and creative. I also think he is a very intelligent, experienced player, but the question is: will he be dedicated to this tournament?
Weaknesses: Like Harley, his lack of commitment is a problem. He has been "out" of the game for 4 weeks, losing first round each week, and he has just seemed like he doesnt' care! Nathan will need to turn his game around this week if he wants to finish the year in the top 5.
Predicted Finish: Round Robin 3rd Place

I don't want to go far in here so I won't be defending too much of points next season, which I already have.:o
Vamos. Jan 5th, 2008, 09:51 PM ^load of rubbish.
This IS a points testing event because you are forced to find a strategy to beat individual players.
You would love to go far in this, if you say you wouldn't then you are LYING. End.
BWLH Jan 5th, 2008, 10:32 PM ^^^
No I'm not lying.I'd lose early and even Thomas also predicted I won't go far.
It's really hard for me to sort out or make points against my opponents. Like Thomas mentioned,I really lack of variety in my game.So I don't think I'm on that level to go far or even win it yet.
I'm sure you'll beat me easily once again IF we meet although our last meeting was during the Rebound Ace season(if I remember well). ;)
BWLH Jan 5th, 2008, 10:34 PM I did try to make some ridiculous game plans, hoping to get lucky with them but I doubt I will have success in doing so.
Vamos. Jan 5th, 2008, 10:41 PM I also made ridiculous gameplans! And they could easily fail, one of them is absolutely awful but I think it suits another player.
Everyone will have weird gameplans, that is part of this tournament for the Round Robin, at least.
Besides I did NOT say you WILL do well, I said deep down you would LIKE to do well. And you would.

Amelie really turns it on when it matters.
Beating Bally and Sharapova, the two top players of the hardcourt season and two most in-form, both in straight sets back to back. :D:D:D
Maria:worship:...good match, and I feel the scoreline was absolutely not worthy of your level. Should've been much closer. :yeah:

Liam :p
sorry Tenniswatcher
BWLH Jan 12th, 2008, 12:29 AM  It's understandable.
I didn't try very hard to make points for you,Momo compared to the others.
But I'm way off my comfort zone this time in YEC.I took some big risks and it seemed like it paid off.:D
So I'll not be mad if I lose but will definitely be very surprised if I won the whole thing with those sets of laughable points!:spit: ;)
Elena Likhovtseva  :p
I haven't blamed you for replacing Lindsay.I made points for her and not for you. That's why I lost.:( :armed:
Kidding.:p
Vamos. Jan 12th, 2008, 12:47 AM Well we will see.
I've been out of my comfort zone too, mainly to beat Baltacha and Sharapova, and that hasn't completely fell off for my Final gameplan unfortunately.
I'm not overly confident, but it should be fun. I am more intrgued that worried.
I really didn't want to lose to Sharapova or Baltacha, losing to you wouldn't be such a major problem.
Although Two Grand Slams, YEC, 3 other titles, Year-ending #1 and most weeks at number one does have a certain ring to it...:D

I hope sybille doesn't mind me saying this...
Your games were very similar, and you both did a good job trying to beat your opponent. It was just a few points and a few well-placed games that separated the two of you :worship: A good match :yeah:
Ï♥╚!ÑÞ§å¥ Jan 12th, 2008, 02:54 AM I hope I still end season #1.

I know.
It works well in this game with good placement. I find that a shame, but I suppose it would be the case in any game.
I won't be using it in normal tournaments I don't think. Simply out of respect.

I hoping that I can get Season 2 week 1 stuff out in a weeks time. It all depends on my excel file... and how much I decide to change (like the schedule, how draws are done, anything like that...). But your answer: hopefully a week :D
