Welcome to the final 'regular tour' tournament of the year, and the 4th grand slam-- the United States Open! Last week, we saw the conclusion of the US Open Series in New Haven for the men and women, and Ivan Ljubicic and Maria Sharapova took home the title of US Open Series Champion and the RACE ranking points that went with them! Will either of these 2 be able take home the US Open title that goes with it, or will one of the other WMFT players rise to the challenge? Find out this week as players compete for what is their last chance to qualify for the Year Ending Championships, raise their seed positition, or perhaps even widen the gap to year end #1!

Women's Preview
The Favorites
Maria Sharapova [4]
Why?: Maria Sharapova has always shown potential, but this hardcourt season she really showed everyone that she belongs at the top of the game. She won 2/4 of the hardcourt tournaments, winning the US Open series, and moved up 4 spots to take her place among the top 5 WMFT players. She has a very solid game plan, and although she has trouble beating a few players there are very few players in this draw that can beat her.
Hardcourt Record: 9-2
Results: 2 Wins, Quarterfinal, Second Round
Biggest Wins: #2 Bammer (x2), #3 Jones, #7 Davenport (x2)
Predicted Result: Champion
Sybille Bammer [2]
Why?: Along with Sharapova, Sybille really dominated this hardcourt event. She won the tournament the first week and followed that up with 2 final losses (both the Sharapova). Although she looked a little tired last week, Bammer rarely loses matches to lower-ranked players. With the exception of Sharapova these 4 weeks, there really wasn't anyone that could stop her.
Hardcourt Record: 10-3
Results: Win, 2 Finals, Second Round
Biggest Wins: #5 Baltacha (x3)
Predicted Result: Finalist (loss to Sharapova)
Elena Baltacha [5]
Why?: She was the only other final winner this hardcourt season, and she is one of, if not the, most consistent player on the tour, with more wins than any other player on hardcourt. She has been a factor on every surface, and with her win last week she comes into this tournament really hot. If she can stay away from Bammer this week, she has a great chance of being the first US Open champion!
Hardcourt Record: 11-3
Results: Win, Final, Semifinal, Quarterfinal
Biggest Wins: #3 Jones, #6 Pennetta, #7 Davenport, Likhovtseva (5 at the time)
Predicted Result: Semifinalist (loss to Bammer)

Vamos. Dec 24th, 2007, 02:02 PM Amelie Mauresmo in a press conference prior to the US Open:
Q. Thoughts on the draw? Your chances in general?
A. Ye, I mean, I only just saw the draw before this. And it soured my mood. I get Nicole in the second round who, potentially, is such a tricky opponent. Not the type of player I want to face when I am yet to win a match on hardcourts. Then I have all kinds of tricky players in my section; culminating in a Semi-Final match with Sharapova, whom I believe to be the favourite. Her and Sybille, anyway. It is not a pleasant draw at all.
If I didn't have this niggling shoulder injury then I would fancy my chances. I would be getting geared up to take on this tough draw. But the fact is I do, and my form is miserable right now. So I just cannot see me getting very far here. Maybe if I win my first two matches, this tournament is on for me, I could play myself in a bit of form...but if someone has a good match against me early on it will be very tough. I am just not match-fit right now, partly my own fault.
But I have worked hard for this and I am prepared to give it all up on the court and that will be that.
Q. Sybille and yourself could really be tied here. You have both had exactly 10 weeks on the number one spot, coming into this final tournament besides the YEC, you have a similar record in Grand Slams; with that Final match in Australia the only thing separating you. Who do you think will come out on top at the end of the season?
A. Well that really depends...I am barely in front for the number one, so it wouldn't surprise me if she moves in front after this tournament. Were she to win it, then I think there is no contest for who comes out on top; it will be her, undoubtedly. She will be far ahead in the rankings!
Right now I am in front, but this doesn't mean much to me. We are on amicable terms. I am only interested in the Grand Slam trophies at the end of the day, everything else is quite relative, if I have more than anybody else then I am the player of that year, in my opinion. But I wish Sybille the best of luck, she has a great draw and a great chance to do well...I hope she capitalises.

I cannot believe that I forgot I was going to New York City :o
I am going to extend the deadline almost 24 hours to Wednesday, December 26th at 7:00 PM EST.
Then, I am going to take all the points with me to New York City, do results, and the tournament will begin on Sunday the 30th.
Sorry about this guys. I can't believe I just completely forgot I was leaving :o
The good news is, by extending things then people will *hopefully* be more active on the 30th, since Christmas will be over. This way we're not having results around the holidays ;)
BWLH Dec 24th, 2007, 06:03 PM Bammer Plays Down Chances Of Another Grand Slam Title
Q: We are now in our last grand slam event this season in New York.So any thought on it?
S: Well,it's been pretty quick huh since the season started.I've been through many ups and downs throughout the season and now it's like a blink of an eye,we're now competing in our last event of the season,I mean for all of the players. So of course everyone will do the best to hit a high note at the end of our season.
Q: Before that,we'd like congratulate you for placing third in the US Open Series standings after reaching three consecutive finals in the first three hardcourt events. What do you think about it?
S: Oh,thank you very much.Well,I absolutely feel glad about it that I did pretty well for it despite the fact that I deserve a slightly higher placing on the standings.I mean I reached 3 straight finals and with almost all of the best players are competing,I am supposed to be the one who's on top of it.However,I guess I just have to blame myself for winning and playing brilliantly for the wrong time(laugh) as the first two events are a lower tier and losing early in the previous one is also probably my downfall for failing to maintain my second place on the standings.Anyway,I'd still congratulate Maria(Sharapova) for a very good performance and Elena(Baltacha) for being pretty consistent on the past few weeks.
Q: Although you're third, you're still considered as one of the hot favourites to win the title. How do you think of your chances of winning it?
S: (laugh)Definitely not.I have a pretty good hardcourt season so far but it seems unconvincing for me even though it's quite an achievement. This is because I was drawn against a couple of same old opponents over and over again. For instance,I kept on facing Elena(Baltacha) 3 straight times for the past one month and Maria(Sharapova) who I met in the finals which I lost.Although it was a good practise for me actually,I hope that I'd face more different opponents whom I never face before.Anyway,I know I'm the favourite but I would still play like usual.I wouldn't want to put too much pressure on myself.I have won a slam, winning several other titles and is now ranked #2 and qualified for YEC.I basically fulfill all my target for this season. Therefore,I won't be as hungry to go for it as like what I felt when I was at Paris but it definitely won't be as easy as ABC since there are some tricky players on even in my quarter.Lucie,Nathalie,Agnieszka,Elena(Likhovtseva ) and even Flavia pose a great thread for me.So it's pretty hard for me to pass all the barriers here as I have lost to half of them before.Even so,either Sacha or Elena(Baltacha) would await me in the semis. So we'll see. However,I'd still try to play my best, hoping to make it an icing on the cake.
Q: So who are your favourites for the title?
S: If I don't count myself in(laugh),I'd choose Maria,Elena and Amelie for it.Well,it's needless for me to state my reason why I choose Maria and Elena but the main reason I'd choose Amelie is that I feel that she's one of the best players out there. What do you need to feel curious or suspect on her ability.#1 with 5 titles which includes 2 slams. She always rise on big ocassions. So I hope she'll find her form soon enough when the tournament begins.Others like Serena,Lindsay,Ana,Flavia are the players who can't be ignored as well.I believe anyone here is capable of winning it.So I wouldn't be very surprised if the winner isn't the one I mentioned as everyone has an equal chance playing on hardcourts. It depends basically to those who plays better on the day. You'll never know.I don't mind who wins but if it's the one that I mentioned just now, they deserve it.
Q: Besides, you are now only around 300 points behind Amelie.Do you think you're going to surpass her on the rankings?
S: I surely have the chance of course. But I believe she deserves it more at the moment as she won 2 slams and played quite good the whole season.Let say I win, perhaps I deserve too.But we still need to see at the YEC to determine the real winner. But I don't matter who gets the rankings in the end.Only Amelie and I are the #1 on the tour. It's quite unbelievable that both of us manage to widen our gaps with others. We are pretty dominant the whole season. So I'm already satisfied with what I've achieved. So we'll see how anyway.
Q: Thanks for the interview. All the best to you!
S: Thanks a lot and your welcome!:)

Finalized draws are attached :)

Ï♥╚!ÑÞ§å¥ Jan 1st, 2008, 06:32 PM With Elena's win, she managed to keep alive the tradition on the women's side that if you win the tournament the week before, you will win the grand slam!
And with Gael's win, he kept alive the tradition that it's bad luck to win the tournament the week before
Ï♥╚!ÑÞ§å¥ Jan 1st, 2008, 06:40 PM The Final YEC Race rankings (with US Open and US Open Series bonus points added) can be found here:
