Kevin. Dec 23rd, 2007, 04:19 PM Draw:
Kevin. Dec 23rd, 2007, 04:19 PM Preview:
(1)Elena Dementieva vs. Elena Baltacha: Elena is the world number one for 20 consecutive weeks now over a close Mirza, so you can't rule her out for the title in New York, but early round losses since her French Open final have let her confidence hit the floor. Elena B had a good run into the QF at the French, and a Birmingham final, but other than that, hasn't proved alot. Potential upset, but Elena D gets the win.
Urszula Radwanska vs. Tathiana Garbin: Urszula has shown alot of promise since her Jr. AO final, and in her debut won Indian Wells, a SF in Wimby and the Eastbourne title, she is one of the players to watch out for, as she can defeat top players. Tathiana is a very consistent but aggressive player, but alcks commitment, watch out for Ula to win.
Brie Whitehead vs. (Q)Julia Vakulenko: Brie won her first title in Toronto, and won the US Open Series, so she is gunning for $2.2 million, off a semifinal in New Haven, she could potentially win the US Open in the form she is in. Julia has struggled on tour, and shouldve been in the MD, but the wildcard went to New Haven champ Daniela Hantuchova. She might have qualified but Brie should beat her.
(8)Jelena Jankovic vs. Yuliana Fedak: The Junior AO champ has shown NOTHING on tour besides a final in Estoril, which she lost three 7-6(6)* sets to Farina Elia. Jankovic, a former number one, is very consistent and she is a threat to the top payers, she should beat Fedak in straights.
(7)Martina Hingis vs. (Q): Martina faces a qualifier in the first round, with a slam win in Paris and a slam final in London, she is 9-1 in slams, you do the math. She should win this easily.
Maria Kirilenko vs. Lindsay Davenport: In her first slam, Kirilenko made the SF in Melbourne, Lindsay made the QF in London. Maria has dropped 10 spots in the past month and a half while Davenport has stalled a little bit. Masha hasn't been active for a while, so expect this to be her farewell. Lindsay should win anyways.
Jelena Dokic vs. (Q)Alexa Glatch: Former Jr. No.1 is making her debut, but could possibly retire to go to college if a coach doesn't pick her up. Jelena has only made the the Warsaw QF as a qualifer other than that she is 4-16,including a QF in Stanford. Already looming retirement at Wimby, Jelena could possibly give her farewell here. If both don't send, (LL) vs. (LL)
(4)Serena Williams vs. Na Li: Na is coming off a QF in New Haven, upsetting no.2 Mirza in round two, Serena made the AO Final, and has done well this summer. This will be a tricky match for Ms.Williams, but I expect for her to climb through handily.
(3)Nikola Hofmanova vs. (WC)Daniela Hantuchova: Nikola is in bad luck, she lost to Daniela last week in the semifinals of New Haven, which Daniela triupmhed handily. Nikola is one of the best players on Pro Tour as we speak besides Whitehead and Mirza,so she should win, but you do not know what Daniela can toss up here. On paper, Nikola should win, but I think Daniela will cause the upset.
Vera Zvonareva vs. Dominika Cibulkova: Dominika is coming off a Tier I SF in San Diego while Vera is coming off a final at the Tier II event in New Haven. Vera is showing a lot of promise lately, but this will be a close call, Dominika can cause the upset over Vera, but Vera will win in a close three setter.
Micahella Krajicek vs. Nathalie Dechy: Nathalie has gotten a couple good wins, noticeably over no.2 Mirza, but Michaella has pushed top players many time thsi year, and has made 2 finals. I think Michaella will win in a tough two setter.
(6)Flavia Pennetta vs. Jennifer Capriati: Flavia is on a 5 match winning streak at slams after winning Wimbledon. J Cap hasn't done alot since winning Barcelona after Wimby. Flavia has a risky plan that players do not use alot, but it is working because no one tests it, that is why she is ranked high. J Cap produces good tennis at hgigher events, so Flavia in three is the prediction i am going to make.
(5)Venus Williams vs. Alona Bondarenko: Alona has a very aggressive gameplan, and has won Charleston this year, and made the Stanford final. This match is a remake of the Charleston final. Poor results have led Venus almost into depression, and said she will retire if she loses her opening round match. She is 0-3, with three opening round losses, so it is not looking too good. Venus won San Diego, she should keep that in her head, but this could potentially be an upset. I think Venus can get her first slam win on home turf.
Shuai Peng vs. Margalita Chakhnashvili: Shuai is improving slowly but surely and she is getting there, making a QF in New Haven she should be proud of. Margalita won her first title in Stanford and is a threat coming itno majors, with 3 QF to her name, with that said, Maka in three.
Anna Chakvetadze vs. Silvia Farina-Elia: Anna won Prague and made the AO SF other than that, she has just won a match then lost one, so her record is just under .500, Silvia won Estoril, but hasn't done anything else. Any of these two can win it, but I think Anna will.
(2)Sania Mirza vs. Qualifier: The highest ranked player Sania could face as a qualifier is Justine Henin, the 2nd seed in Qualys, she amde the QF last week before bowing out to Nikola Hofmanova in straights. sania has a gameplan, that i do not agree with and it shoewd in her loss to Na Li last week. If Sania tweaks her game plan a little bit she can win the US Open and could possibly become number one. Sania in three.
Kevin. Dec 23rd, 2007, 04:19 PM Other Stuff:
Kevin. Dec 23rd, 2007, 04:24 PM we have 41 players (including the 9 juniors that turned pro)
how many should be in MD/QD??
Gigi. Dec 23rd, 2007, 04:29 PM I think you should start making 64 draws, the qualie would be too big.
Kevin. Dec 23rd, 2007, 04:47 PM so 40 players (excluding by Jr player Glatch)

Patch Dec 23rd, 2007, 04:48 PM we have 41 players (including the 9 juniors that turned pro)
how many should be in MD/QD??

Kevin. Dec 23rd, 2007, 04:48 PM how many byes for players?? I am so confused
Kevin. Dec 23rd, 2007, 04:51 PM so that would be 24 byes with 40 players=64 :D

I'm going to win this one even if it kills me.
Kevin. Dec 24th, 2007, 04:21 AM tell it Sania!!!
Na those points for denise, the same for na??
I have a couple of quotes from Serena Williams. coming up!
Kevin. Dec 24th, 2007, 04:26 AM Some quotes from Serena Williams
Can you quote on the possible retirements of Elena [Dementieva] and sister Venus [Williams]?
yeah, you can totally quote me. I mean Sania won a title a couple of weeks ago, but it's been really tough for us. The up and comers and stepping it up, and making it tough for us, but that's what make the competition so tough.
Can you tell us about your part of the draw???
I mean I've been struggling as of late, so I'm not terribly confident, but I am a top 4 player, so I mean I have some belief. I'll definitely need to be near my best to even get out the first round, and hopefully I can discover some good form.
Kevin. Dec 24th, 2007, 06:09 AM some quotes from Sania Mirza:
About the Draw?
Sania: I think the field is very tough and there's a lot of great players in the main draw as well is in qualfying. The junior players have a huge chance to make a big splash in the first tournament on tour and I wish them all the best of luck. But they're going to have to realize that they cant come in with a chip on their shoulder, they're going to have to earn their spots on tour just like everyone else has.
About the impending retirements of Elena and Venus
Elena, Venus and I have talked about their retirements and I think it's really not my place to comment on whats going on with them. I really hope they stay with me on tour, they're my bestfriends along with Serena [Williams]. Whatever they choose, I'll support their decision as should the rest of the tour. They're both amazing people and hopefully this isn't the last of them we'll be seeing.
frici Dec 24th, 2007, 11:14 AM Good luck Nathalie Dechy:)
