The tier one event in Toronto, Canada, the Rogers Cup, started off with a big bang earlier this morning, however the hype of seeing the tour's top players was a little damaged with numerous amounts of first round upsets. All seeded players in the bottom half lost their round one matches, with the exception of second-seeded Sania Mirza. Leaving her with a wide open field to rush into a second consecutive final. In the top half, fifth-seeded Venus Williams and eigth-seeded Martina Hingis were the only two players to advance, top-seeded Elena Dementieva also advanced into the second round automatically due to her round one bye. "I'm thrilled to have another win. It's great to still be in the tournament especially after seeing how many upsets there were today, I'm glad that I'm not one of them. I was a little tired in the third set, but I kept up with Michaella [Krajicek]. She played really good in the third, but I kept fighting and I think the more I fought the more she started to crumble under the pressure. She gave me a run for my money, and while it was a good match, I'd rather have an easier match for round two, but with how the first round went for the seeded players, I don't think I'm going to have an easy match for a while." Mirza, who showed us her on-court dominance, winning a very close triple set match over Krajicek; 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4). The Indian sensation closed out the match with 27 winners to 18 unforced errors in the match with 4 aces to only 2 double faults. The world's number two said she was satisfied with her statistics as long as they continue to be as positive as this matches were. "I think I played really smart in this match but I played a little too conservative in the third set which is why it took so long for me to close out this match. It really came down to the wire in this match which caused me unwanted stress. I think she'll do great at the U.S Open, she's got great ground game and she can serve really fast and has great aim on her second serve. She's definently one to watch out for at Flushing Meadows." After suffering a hamstring injury after her semi-final loss at Wimbledon, Mirza lost in back to back early rounds at the start of the North American hardcourt season, but last week, showed that no matter what condition she's in, she's a threat. She made a run to the finals in Los Angeles, setting up the first ever top-seed vs. second-seed final in Pro Tour history. For this history-making match, would you expect anything less than for Sania Mirza to grab her chance to be in the books? Well she did exactly that and defeated Elena Dementieva; 1-6, 6-2, 7-5, winning her third career singles title of the year. "Winning last week was definently amazing. I took a lot of confidence from my match against Elena with me today and it really helped out. I have another match to play later on in the day and I feel good about it. I'm unsure whether or not I'll be playing doubles, but if I do, it's just going to be another title that I'm gunning for." Kevin. Dec 17th, 2007, 08:27 PM Most likely all doubles matches will be on the day of the final :D no change points for doubles young_gunner913 Dec 17th, 2007, 09:07 PM When will round two matches be played? :bounce: Kevin. Dec 17th, 2007, 10:25 PM Sania finally addresses the rumors http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3247/HDC207080800_1024x768.jpg Sania sat down with me one-on-one with a candid interview with no questions held back. Here she says if she will retire or not and about different topics about being a Pro Tour player. Your breakthrough tournament was defitnely Antwerp, are there other tournaments besides that one that you have loved? I loved playing in Rome. It was such an amazing tournament and it was really a defining moment in my career. I won my first career title there after bombing two previous finals, and it was just so magical. Italy is such a beautiful country and I certainly cannot wait to go and defend my title there next season. The match against Venus was my favorite, what are your favorite matches? I love playing against Venus, she's such a great player and we always have a lot of fun playing against each other. She's my favorite person to play against without a doubt. But my favorite match was last week's final in Los Angeles against Elena. Beating the world's number one in a final is a huge achievement. And yes, I think I'm going to be gloating about that win for quite some time. Lets get down to buisness, are you retiring or not? I've thought about it a lot, and I've come to the decision that tennis is my life and it's my passion. If you take that away, I really don't have that much of a life, so I've decided that I will not be retiring from the tour. I will stay with the Pro Tour as long as they will have me. You are ranked no.2,are you ready to give that up? Yes, I'm totally ready to give up the number 2 ranking and ready to take over the number 1. You are one the up-and-comers of the game? I like to think that I am. It took me a long time to get to where I am currently. I still have a little bit more up though. Who are your main competitors? My only competitor is Elena Dementieva. She's ranked number 1 and I want her rank. It's as simple as that. She's one of my really good friends on tour, she's a great girl but she has what I want and I plan on taking it. Do you have a lover in your life? I'm very very good friends with Andy Roddick. [Laughs] Also what do you think of Pro Tour, what do you also think should be change and what abot the director? I think the Pro Tour is a great tour, that's why I've decided to stick with it. I think really all that could change is bring back the previews for the matches (I loved reading those), and bring back picture scoring. I think you're fine as a director as is. Thank You Sania! Thank You Kevin. Dec 18th, 2007, 11:22 AM Quarterfinal results: (8)Martina Hingis def. (1)Elena Dementieva 1-6,6-3,7-5 Brie Whitehead def. (5)Venus Williams 6-3,0-6,6-2 Urszula Radwanska def. (1)Elena Dementieva 1-6 6-3 7-5 'Its great to be back in a semi final again. Its my first one since Wimbledon and would have probably tanked it if it wasnt against Dementieva. I only peak for the majors, they are what count but this is a tier 1 event and against the top ranked player so I thought I would try. I gave her a head start because I wanted a challenge and when I went 6-1 3-1 down, I started to try and played some fantastic tennis. In the final set, she improved and it was high quality but I came through. Brie next, I dont expect to win but if I do, great! My goal is the US Open!!!!'
