Serena ready to pound LA

http://espndeportes-akamai.espn.go.com/2003/photos2006/0811/a_Serenafesteja_v.jpg

Serena Williams-a former number 2-struggling to get to the top again, she heads to her former home near Compton,California-here at the JP Morgan Chase Open in Los Angeles. She is ready and is determined to make it to the top. She sat down with me for a pre-tournament interview.

Describe your season so far.
-I started out well, and then, I kinda just lost my way. I hope I can find my way back, because losing is not an enjoyable thing. I love tennis, and I love playing, and I really love winning. So I hope I can do that again...SOON!

You were no.2, then you started decresing, what happened? How are you now?-It was just a lot of pressure, and I started thinking too much in matches, but you know, it was a phase, and it made me stronger.

How are you feeling coming back to you first home in Los Angeles?
-I'm very excited. LA is great. The food, the entertainment, and of course the tennis :D

Describe you favorite matches and tournaments. Personally, my favorite match was the Doha final vs. Krajicek (which went to three tiebreak sets, ending in Serena's favor)?
-That was my favorite too. It was such a great match. Misa played VERY well, but I mean, I was obviously happy that I was able to pull that one out.

Who are your toughest competitors?
-Well, obviously the 3 people ranked ahead of me, and Venus. She just won the last tournament, and I need to keep on top of my game if I want to be #1. But I mean the tour is very deep. There are lots of talented players with very talented coaches, so I mean, everyone's tough.

Who are the up and comers in your opinion?
-You know, I haven't really been looking too much at the tour as a whole, I've just been looking across the net, but I will keep my eyes pealed for sure. I just am taking it one match at a time, and worrying about my own game. I need to get myself together first

You think you can be number one despite the points gap?
-With hard work anything's possible. Sooner or later, someone new will become #1, so I'm just hoping it's me.

What do you think of Pro Tour?
- I LOVE IT! :D

Thank you and Good Luck!
-Thank you :wavey:

Mirza Ready to Retire?

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/loser.jpg
Frustrated with her inconsistant play, Sania Mirza slams her racquet down on the court after loosing in the second round of the Acura Clasic.

India's top ranked player, Sania Mirza has been comptemplating retirement over the past couple of weeks and said that she will come to a straight decision this week. Mirza, who is currently ranked number two in the world, said that she's been playing incosistantly due to an overwhelming schedule and injuries. She is to recieve a round one bye in the opening round of the JPMorgan Chase Open.

"I wasn't really happy with how fast the last tournament went. If you ask me, too many matches we're all played on the same day and it was too much chaos. I don't really think that you should have so many rounds played in one day but that's just my opinion. And if it comes down to it, I'll take my opinion else where and retire."

Mirza who is one of the most outspoken players on the tour is standing firm with her thoughts. But said that her retirement thoughts are not just because of the last tournament, after her loss in the semi-finals of Wimbledon, she had an abdomen injury which helped her fall in straight sets to Lindsay Davenport in Stanford.

"I feel a little better but I still haven't recovered fully. Hopefully, I'll be able to make it further than I have in prior tournaments on the hardcourts. My decision on retiring will come at the end of the week because as of right now, I don't even know."

The Indian sensation has been by far, one of the tour's hottest stars. She's a two-time singles titlest, winning Rome and Birmingham and a three-time doubles titlest, winning titles in Amelia Island, Antwerp, and Miami with partner, Mary Pierce. A couple of weeks before Wimbledon, Pierce retired from the tour citing an injury which would take months to heal.

"I definently miss Mary, she was one of my best friends on tour. I'm still very close with both Venus and Serena Williams. They have been a support for me and I think that's what you need when you're always on the road, away from family and your home friends."

Whether this is Mirza's last tournament on tour or not, she's said that she's going to give it her all and try to win it.

"If this is my last tournament, I'm going to go down fighting. If this isn't my last tournament, then I'm still going to kick ass as if it were my last. We'll see how I do this week."

Battle of the Titans

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/flushingmeadows.jpg
Sania Mirza poses with her trophy for winning the JPMorgan Chase Open in Los Angeles, California. Mirza defeated world number one Elena Dementieva in the finals to win the title.

For one of the first times on the tour, we saw the top two seeds of the tournament advance to the finals to set up a battle between the two best players in the world for the title. World number one, Elena Dementieva was thought to be the heavy favorite for the title after reaching the finals. However, the only woman who could spoil those dreams of Dementieva's, also found her way to the finals, and that woman is second ranked, Sania Mirza.

In the championship match, we saw the top two players literally destroy one another sharing one set a piece with dominating wins over the other one at 6-1. Dementieva won the first set and Mirza won the second set. In the end though, Mirza's consistancy won over Dementieva's tough ground strokes and Sania defeated Elena 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 to win her third career singles title of the year. The last time the two women met, was in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

"It feels great. I'm so excited. I wasn't really expecting to win but the fact that I did makes this win all the more sweet. And to beat Elena in the finals of a tournament is not the easiest thing in the world. She's such an amazing player and it really means something if you can beat her in a final, it definently makes me feel like I deserve my ranking. But I still have hopes to reach the world's number one someday."

Mirza who has been under extensive press watch because of thoughts of retirement due to injury and an overwhelming amount of schedule conflicts. Numerous amounts of reporters have tried to schedule an exclusive interview with the Indian star but none have been successful. Even during after match interviews Mirza has replied questions about her retirement with "no comment".

"I don't feel like talking about whether I'm going to retire or not, especially after winning my third career title. For what it's worth, I will tell you that I will be playing in Toronto and my decision will be made publicly there. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go party with my girls. Later gators."
