Australia's No. 1 player Sam Stosur will be missing from the tie while she recovers from illness. "It's unfortunate that Sam's not available to play," said captain David Taylor. "But I think having a team that includes three top 100 singles players and two top 12 doubles players gives us a lot of that hope that we can come out on top and advance to a World Group II Play-off in April." Dellacqua is a relative newcomer to Fed Cup, having played just two singles rubbers, but the 22 year old had a breakthrough year in 2007, cracking the top 100 for the first time. Eight nations will compete in the round-robin competition held in Bangkok - Australia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, China, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, Thailand and Uzbekistan - and will be divided into two pools of four. The winners of each pool play off, with the winning team advancing to the World Group II Play-offs in April 2008. The nation finishing third in each pool will play off against the nation finishing fourth in the other pool with the two losing nations being relegated to Asia/Oceania Zone Group II in 2009. Please note that the format is subject to change if any nation withdraws. So it seems that only the winner of each pool will still have a chance to advance to World Group II Play-Offs. C'mon Sandy, try your best to win the single and then hopefully INA can win the double as well. Poor Ayu, it seems that she was leading 4-1 in both set, but got treatment in both sets for her thigh, and eventually lost both sets because she couldn't run freely. Hope it's not serious though. go_distance Feb 1st, 2008, 06:41 AM C'mon Sandy! I'm pretty sure that Jiro is wrong on this, I got an email from one of the guys at ITF a few days ago. On top of this you can clearly see on http://www.fedcup.com/ties/ao1.asp that the top two teams in each pool will advance to the 1st-4th play-off. This has changed from what it said a few days ago, but I'm pretty sure its correct this time. This is due to there being Division 1 and Division 2 this year, instead of last where they all played in 1 division. Mana Feb 1st, 2008, 06:46 AM Yay for Harley, and NZ! Y.J.CHANfan Feb 1st, 2008, 06:49 AM Well, but on this page it says the same as Jiro. http://www.fedcup.com/results/ao1.asp The two pool winners will play-off with the winning team advancing to the World Group II Play-offs in April 2008. The third place team in each pool will play-off against the fourth-placed team in the other pool, with the two losing teams relegated to Asia/Oceania Zone Group II in 2009. It is the number of group and spot than America. I can't see how the play-off should be different, but it is only logical so maybe Itf is weird and they are doing play-off with 4 teams lol ;) kittyking Feb 1st, 2008, 07:58 AM If Australia win 3-0 against India, they will play the play-off against Uzbekistan :) It does seem logical to do it that way yes If New Zealand win 3-0 over Indonesia and Australia win 3-0 over India then both New Zealand and Australia have the same amount of win's. So in that case does Australia finish top because they beat New Zealand? Or does it come down to Set Ratio ITF are alot of help aren't they  bg017 Feb 1st, 2008, 08:13 AM well done casey :D Y.J.CHANfan Feb 1st, 2008, 08:14 AM Yung-Jan Chan (TPE) d Tamarine Tanasugarn (THA) 64 26 61 Taiwan(Chinese Taipei) d Thailand 2:0 Ling Zhang (HKG) d Vlada Ekshibarova (UZB) 63 64 Amanmuradova/Tulyaganova (UZB) d. THA will face IND of Group A;HKG will face INA or AUS with the losing teams being degraded. kittyking Feb 1st, 2008, 09:11 AM We've been debating this for awhile in Tennis Aus/NZ (because the Group I winner would be one of these two mainly). I will not believe if either India or Thailand will be relegrated to Zone II because they have such calibers players and they do not belong to there! Hongkong will deserve but really I dont think India and Thailand belon there =( I thought the last team on each group automatically will be relegrated to zoneII which are India and Hongkong.. Why should Indonesia and Thai play again? They are third in group.. ANyone? Sania Mirza will be very upset to waste time to play against newb in ZONE II!!! Y.J.CHANfan Feb 1st, 2008, 09:46 AM http://www.fedcup.com/results/ao1.asp The third place team in each pool will play-off against the fourth-placed team in the other pool, with the two losing teams relegated to Asia/Oceania Zone Group II in 2009. This is why there would be still two ties deciding which teams will be degraded. And to kittyking, according to what etf has quoted(from Fed Cup Regulations Appendix A 11),when teams have the same W/L record then it comes down to match ratio,as Australia and New Zealand are both 6/3 on this,it counts on set ratio, then, which New Zealand gets the better hand. ;) kittyking Feb 1st, 2008, 09:50 AM This is why there would be still two ties deciding which teams will be degraded. IND is india and IDN is Indonesia. (worldly known) I thought third place vs fouth place on the other group.. why IDN vs THA? Sania Mirza seems will play double tie against HGK. (according to Jiro website), why she has been hiding? Injured? IDN will absolutely lose to THA because Ayu and Sandy wont play single as they are injured. Does it mean the loser team of those two ties will be delegated to zone 2? or IND and HGK are automatically already delegated to Zone II as they finish 7 and 8?
