jamatthews Dec 13th, 2007, 02:36 PM British Squad Announced:
Nigel Sears, Great Britain’s Fed Cup Captain, today announced the squad for Great Britain’s Europe/Africa Zone Group I Fed Cup matches in Budapest, Hungary, week commencing 28th January.
The Great Britain squad will be:
- Anne Keothavong
- Elena Baltacha
- Naomi Cavaday
- Melanie South
16 year old Jocelyn Rae, one of Great Britain’s most promising junior players, will also be travelling with the squad to gain international experience.
Great Britain will compete against 14 other nations and teams will be drawn into four Round Robin pools. The winner of each pool will play-off to determine which two nations will be promoted to the World Group II Play-off in April 2008.
Nigel Sears, GB Fed Cup captain, said: “I have selected a team that I believe has the best possible opportunity to succeed in Budapest. We have had some promising results on the international stage this year and I am confident that the team will perform well in Hungary. Fed Cup is becoming increasingly important as we strive to get more of our players competing in high level international events.
Sears added: “Doubles is a crucial part of Fed Cup and although we are without a doubles specialist this year I feel that with the team I have selected we have a number of options in both singles and doubles. Fed Cup is a tough event and we will come up against world class players but I am looking forward to the challenge.”
Great Britain finished 11th in Euro/Africa Zone Group I in 2007. Matches will be played on indoor carpet at the SYMA Sportkozpont.

Modstanderne findes først i kampugen.

I found it on that website. 14000 HUF is like €55, that is a four day pass for the first ring. That is insanely cheap.

jamatthews Jan 3rd, 2008, 04:03 PM Katie replaces Naomi in the team.
Katie O’Brien has replaced Naomi Cavaday in the Great Britain Fed Cup squad. The British number one will travel to Budapest later this month alongside Anne Keothavong, Elena Baltacha and Mel South to take part in the Euro/Africa zone Group I event.
Katie O’Brien, voted 2007’s British female player of the year in the LTA awards, achieved a career high ranking of 121 in July thanks to reaching the last 16 of the WTA event in Eastbourne followed by her first ever main draw win at Wimbledon.
18 year old Cavaday had begun the 2008 season in New Zealand, recording back to back wins at the ASB Classic, a WTA Tour event before losing out to Ahsha Rolle in the final round of qualifying. Cavaday had been struggling with an ankle injury throughout the later part of 2007 and this week she made the decision to withdraw from the Fed Cup.
Nigel Sears commented: “Obviously it is a great shame that Naomi has had to pull out of the Fed Cup squad but we have an excellent replacement in Katie, it was a very tough decision to leave her out of the initial squad and I am delighted to be able to call up a player of her quality. I am confident that the team will perform well in Budapest. It is important that Naomi is able to fully recover and I look forward to seeing her back on the court soon.”

Unbelievable that Larcher de Brito (only 14-years-old!) doesn't find it an honour to play for her country. Has she already got an attitude or does she feel more American than Portugese as she's been living in the States for almost half her life now?
As for Piedade... she's already 25 years old, she's been in the top 200 (mostly 150-170), in the 11 years she's been playing professional tennis, altogether a whopping 58 weeks. She's now ranked 300 in singles and 211 in doubles. It's not like she's gonna play the Austrlian Open or partake in a 100k tourney, so I really don't get that she can't spend 3 weeks preparing and playing FedCup for her country. Now it's almost certain the team will relegate... :awww:

Well, I asked Sofia Shapatava some time ago but she said that she wont go 100% cause the GTF president hates her and only takes players she likes. (Leila Meshi btw :o) I'm waiting for an answer from Manana Shapakidze now, but most likely she wont go either, I predict the same squad as last year which is:
Chakhnashvili
Gorgodze
Kalashnikova
Kvatsabaia
The last one might be changed my Mikadze or Jikia, noone else.
But on the other hand, Gorgodze and Kalashnikova are the future of our tennis, imagine the experience they'll (especially Gorgodze) will get if she gets to play Ana or Jelena. :bolt:

Right now, Michelle still doesn't decide anything about her career. It's the IMG that controls everything, she even said to a newspaper that she didn't even know that the Portuguese Tennis Federation was in negotiations with the IMG for her to play Fed Cup :o .
As for Frederica, she has been in fight with the Portuguese Tennis Federation for years. And this year, they gave her just 3 days to decide if she was going to play or not. She had already planned to play in the USA, and the thing is that they usually don't even pay the plane ticket from the USA to Portugal, and the prize money that the players should receive for representing the team is only received months or years later! The players outside the top 200 struggle financially to continue their career, so I completly understand her decision. Although I'm sad, because I'm pretty sure that we'll be relegated. Unless Neuza can win her singles macthes and in doubles with Ana Nogueira, they make a good team, so maybe they have a chance.

I'd go for Gorgodze, Oksana's cant qualify in a 10K so she MUSTNT play, Gorgodze didnt finish the season well, though she may have trained hard for the past 3 months. Kvatsabaia isnt jsut as good as them, though if it were clay, she had to play.

We're not on Clay anymore, staying afloat is a poor ambition.

Allthough in some way Klepac has a more powerful game and better mental, but I think Zec Peškirič is getting better. I think she will play either way, so...

I don't know about international/sports channels, but M1 Hungary will show the Szavay match every day. M1 has livestream here: http://www.mtv.hu/videotar/?id=231. Commentary will be hungarian of course. Show starts at 16.30 CET every day. (and lasts for 2hrs according to the EPG).

There was no livescore in Bulgaria in the last few years :( BTW there is no problem to post at least the results when the match are finished , there was an internet in the courts but it seems noone ever think that its possible so much people to be interested in the scores...

Actually, one of my Dutch friends went last year, and she did use the net there to keep us updated a bit (then mostly the Dutch scores) on Misa's site - so that was good. But this year it's different - last year she managed to get a press pass (no idea how, coz she ain't anything to do with the press, and doesn't do the website of misa either  ). So she was hoping to get one this year, but I don't think she did.
DutchieGirl Jan 30th, 2008, 11:02 AM BTW, anyone knows why they put kustova instead of Govortsova?
Maybe Olga didn't want to play?

In Romania:lol:. We don't have conditions to organize a competition with 15-16 teams.
We will play with France in Davis Cup in a arena with 2.200 places, and the ITF rules requires 4.500.
Martijn De Jong Jan 30th, 2008, 11:25 AM This website sucks when i take a look on this website. I can't call Manon Dutchiegirl. Any Scores?
