Torrential rain showers wreaked havoc on the schedule of the first round of qualifying of the USTA Women's Satellite of Aventura at the Turnberry Isle Country Club and Yacht Club on Sunday, September 30, 2001. Two rounds will be played on Monday, October 1st at the two sites of the Turnberry Isle Resort and Club.
Completed matches include Aventura resident and Nunez Tennis Training student, Tsitsi Masviba who defeated Tsippy Waterman of Pompano Beach 6-4, 6-1. Thirteen seed, Monique Viele from Pompano Beach defeated Heeshun Lyoo-Suh of Korea, 6-2, 6-4. Wild card entry, Miami resident Jenni-Lee Heinser upset Colombia's Natalia Sanchez who trains at the Extreme Tennis Academy program in North Miami Beach, 6-1, 6-1.
Monday's schedule includes the completion of the first round matches and second round play. The public is invited to attend the matches. Proceeds from the event benefit the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund. Eight players will qualify to compete in the Main Draw of the event which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 2nd at the Turnberry Isle Yacht Club.
Sponsors of the event include: Nunez Tennis Training, Turnberry Isle Resort and Club, Wilson Racquet Sports, Yonex Racquets, X-ade "Get it Back", Ramada Plaza Marco Polo Resort, Dr. Michael Wendrow, CarePlus, and Nike. The event is a USTA Professional Circuit Tournament

TheBoiledEgg Oct 3rd, 2001, 12:28 PM #1 Seed and defending Champion, Tiffany Dabek advanced to the second round in defense of her title by defeating Delray Beach's Whitney Benik on Tuesday during the first round of Main Draw action at the Turnberry Isle Yacht Club in Aventura, Florida. The score of the match was 6-2, 6-2. Miami resident Christyn Lucas of Miami defeated fellow Miami resident, Audrey Banada in a tough three set match 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Lucas was entered in the tournament via a wild card from the USTA.
The first round matches will continue on Tuesday featuring local players from Broward and Dade counties who are advancing in their tennis careers to the Professional Circuit. Wild Card Qualifier, Jenni-Lee Heinser will take on number 4 seed Maria Fernanda Alves from Brazil. Milangela Morales from Key Biscayne will face Hungry's Melinda Czink, Boca Raton's ALex McGoodwin will face Mexico's Erika Valdes, Coconut Creek's Shenay Perry will take on Kristin Schlukebir, Pompano Beach's Katia Afinogenova will take on Tracy O' Connor. Boca Raton and Evert Academy standout, Shadisha Robinson will play American Whitney Laiho as two qualifiers will play to advance to the next second round of play.
