WMFT: Women's & Men's Fantasy Tour
Week #17
WTA: Stanford

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/3/global/graphics/logos/stanford.jpg

Welcome to North America for the US Open Series! It's the first hard court event, and that's means it's also your first of 4 chances to gain points toward you US Open Series Ranking. Keep in mind that at the end of the hardcourt season, the top 3 finishers get RACE ranking points, toward qualifying for the YEC! For more information on that, go here: http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=324366

The women will kick off the hardcourts in Stanford for the Bank of the West Classic. Although it's only a tier IV, this week is important because it will count toward your US Open Series standing! The last 2 weeks of the grass season, we saw new World #1 Amelie Mauresmo prevail, making her triumphant "return" to the top of the women's game, winning her 2nd grand slam of the year. Aside from that though, we saw players like Flavia Pennetta, Elena Likhovtseva, and Maria Sharapova take their (rightful?) places at the top of the game, and show just how strong of competitors they can be!

On the men's side last week, we saw Joachim Johansson win only his 2nd match ever on the WMFT Tour, then run on to take home the Wimbledon title, beating yet another surprise, Richard Gasquet, in the final. This prove that anything, especially on the men's side, can happen! Will Johansson and Gasquet prevail again this week, and continue their run up the rankings? Will a top player finally win an event? Or will someone completely knew establish themselves as a champion? Find out now here at the RCA Championships!

Bammer Demolishes Baltacha
To Win Fourth Title

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3217/20060728_05_71496220jj038_bank_of_the_w.jpg

After a rather disappointing season,WMTF #2 Sybille Bammer claimed her fourth title of the season in Stanford after thrashing #10 ranked British player,Elena Baltacha 6-3,6-0 in the final.

The Austrian player played brilliantly throughout the match while her opponent looked rather tired from her previous match.Baltacha was simply outplayed by the #2 ranked player and she just couldn't reply Bammer's shots.Bammer eventually cruised to her victory after she bagelled the British player in the second set and has a total of 28 winners compared to her opponent's 8 winners.

"Wow!A pretty strange week for me.I was on the verge of losing my first match on hardcourt, but I somehow found my way to win this title. It's a really amazing week for me,especially my last couple of matches,in which I won in straight sets.Elena(Baltacha) didn't play badly, perhaps she was just tired from her previous matches. At the moment,I'm very very satisfied with another title and hopefully it's a sign for more good things to come."said Bammer after the match.

She started off the event with a first round bye as the second seed. She then faced Chinese player,Na Li which Bammer won the match 6-3,6-7(2),6-4.Another unseeded oppoent,Nathalie Dechy awaited her in the quarterfinal and she battled past the Frenchwoman with a 5-7,6-4,6-4 win over her.Next, she met American player,Serena Williams, who had upset fourth seed Maria Kirilenko and eighth seeded Maria Sharapova, in the semifinals.Bammer was too much for the inexperienced American as Bammer defeated the African-American 7-6(2),6-2.She finally beat Baltacha, who also upset third ranked Sacha Jones of New Zealand and 5th seeded Russian Elena Likhovtseva en route to the final,to lift up the trophy on the American soil.

With the victory,Bammer has won $23,700 and gained 115 ranking points. As the winner of the event, she is also in contention to win the US Open Series, which offers race points and $1,000,000 for the winner of the series.

Venus loses early
"Maybe it's the (nasty) corset dress?"

Venus Williams burys her face in herself as she hits another unforced error during her first round loss against Maria Sharapova. Williams has lost in the first round for two executive events.

Venus Williams lost earlier in the week to 8th seeded Maria Sharapova 2-6,5-7 in the Bank of the West Classic. Williams made 39 unforced errors to only 12 winners in the match against the blonde Russian. Venus was upset because this has been the second week in a-row that she has lost in the first round. Williams was a top pick to win Wimbledon last week, but fell to sister Serena, who is making quite an entrance onto the tour.

"Yeah, losing to Serena last week was hard and how this week I lose to Maria, I have got to do something. Maybe I should lose the corset dress. Serena is definatly the better Williams right now, but I am still ranked higher" said Williams, wooingly.

Venus should lose more than the corset dress. First off she hit 92 unforced errors in both of her first round losses combined. Next, she better show up with a new weave 'cause the one she has is not working so well. Venus, get your act together. NOW.
