Week #16
WTA & ATP: The Championships, Wimbledon

http://www.atptennis.com/5/graphics/tournamentlogos/wimbledon_90z90.gif

Welcome to Wimbledon! It's Week #16 on the WMFT tour, and it's time for the 3rd grand slam of the year! This tournament is important not only because it's a grand slam, but because it marks the end of the grass season, meaning only the hard courts remain before the year-ending championships! Last week, we saw the 2nd seed Amelie Mauresmo make her triumphant return to a title, but on the men's side we saw all of the top 7 seeds lose their first matches! Will the grass seasons upset tradition continue this week, or will the top players come through at this top stage?

The Championships: Wimbledon-- Preview

The Ladies

The Favorites
Miss Amelie Mauresmo [2]
Grass Record: 5-3
Why?: I think after her performance last week, Amelie deserves the honors of being the top favorite! With the exception of her semifinal match, she really blew through her competition and showed the other players how to win! We can never ignore the fact that she has 1 of the only other 2 grand slams this year, and that she has more titles than any other WTA player! Plus she's got that little thing in the back of her mind-- the number 1 ranking-- so she's got more at stake here!
Strengths: Amelie really knows how to win, and she knows how to do it on the biggest stages. After a terrible grass season, she came into the Tier I last week and was at her best. She really knows how to raise her level of play. Also, I think her draw really helps her here. Davenport will be a tough quarterfinal, but in general she doesn't have any real threats in her quarter, and with the exception of Likhovtseva her 1/2 is pretty easy!
Weaknesses: Obviously her biggest weakness has been the fact that she only has a 5-3 record. If she comes out and players like the pre-Eastbourne Mauresmo, she'll be crushed. However, if she can keep her level of play up from last week she should be okay.

Mrs. Elena Likhovtseva
Grass Record: 11-3
Why?: Just look at her record! Elena has played amazingly on grass, and the fact that she has a title on grass really puts her near the top. Granted, she's not even seeded, but I think after beating Bammer last week she really has earned this spot.
Strengths: Her gameplan is amazingly designed, and she really has the ability to beat not only the lower ranked players but the top seeds as well. Plus, her draw (with the exception of Venus) is very good. She's got Gallovits (terrible grass season) in round 1, then if she can get through Venus she'd either play Jones (has not won a match on grass) or a consistent-but-not-to-the-next-level Harkleroad.
Weaknesses: I think her biggest weakness is the fact that she'll play Venus in the 2nd Round. I have full faith in her to adjust her game plan to beat Venus, but if she doesn't change it correctly she will once again be double bageled by Venus.

Miss Venus Williams [7]
Grass Record: 10-3
Why?: She has a title and a final on grass! Although her game plan is hit-or-miss, she really takes advantage of the players that have fallen a sleep a bit and are inactive. I think her draw suits her well also. Although she won't be any of the top players with this game plan, if the draw goes well for her (like it has this grass season) she could easily make a run to the final or even the title!
Strengths: Her gameplan's ball-bashing. If she manages to get all players that she beats with this plan, she'll do well here.
Weaknesses: Her gameplan. Although it's her strength, it's also her biggest weakness. She could lose round 1, or win the title. It all depends on whether the players are smart enough to change their plans!!!!

The Dark Horses
Maria Sharapova
Grass Record: 7-4
Why?: She has two finals on grass, both of which she was points from winning! Sharapova has a top-player-like gameplan. It's not quite to that point, but she really knows what she's doing and how to win. It's terrible for her that she drew Kirilenko in round 2 and Chakvetadze/Baltacha in QF, but if any unseeded player is gonna make the semis with this draw, it's her.
Strengths: Her gamplan's variety. With this plan, she has already beaten Kirilenko twice, so things are looking good for another upset. She has just the right amount of attacking and "pushing" in her plan. Plus her draw is good for her, since she gets Larsson round 1 (hasn't done anything really on the tour so far) and Kirilenko round 2 (who, as I said, she's beaten twice).
Weaknesses: Her inconsistency. Her gameplan is good, but as we've seen she can make the final one week then lose round 1 the next.

Elena Baltacha
Grass Record: 5-4
Why?: She has beaten 4 of the top 8 seeds on grass, including Mauresmo (#2), Jones (#3), Chakvetadze (#5), and Davenport (#6). If anyone has the potential to beat a top player, it's Baltacha. She knows how to win, and what she needs to do to beat even the best players in the world. Plus, since she is in the top half her draw is pretty good. In round 2 she'll play Chakvetadze, who she has already beaten, but her quarterfinal match will be tough!
Strengths: Her record against top players. She has been known all year as a dark horse, and it's because she pushes the top seeds and, a lot of the time, beats them.
Weaknesses: Holes in her game plan. Her game plan is good, but it's susceptible to losing to "easy" game plans, those that lower ranked players used. Dechy is a tough first round opponent, and it should be a good match.

Sybille Bammer [1]
Grass Record: 0-1
Why?: Okay, maybe it was a mistake making Bammer a favorite last week! But, she is definitely a dark horse. And yes, top seeds can be dark horses! Bammer isn't expected to play well here, simply because of her inactivity. However, she as well as anyone could make a run to the title.
Strengths: Her gameplan, the fact that she's number 1, and her ability to win. Her gameplan is one of the best on tour, and if she can improve it from last week (which she must if she wants to win!) then she could win here. Plus, she's got more confidence than any player on tour, simply because of the 1 in front of her name!
Weaknesses: Lack of match play. It'll hurt her that she has only played 1 match on grass, especially the fact that she lost it. She hasn't had the ability to change her game plan to what works, because she doesn't know yet what does/doesn't work!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Gentlemen

The Favorites
Nathan Healey [3]
Grass Record: 7-3
Why?: It's really hard to pick a favorite when 7 of the top 8 seeds lose their first match the week before. However, Nathan is clearly the favorite of the top seeds. He has a title and a semi on grass, and we cannot forget that he was once #1 in the world! Although he's listed as the top favorite, he's really not a "clear-cut favorite", and it's really that far above the others.
Strengths: He still has a very original point system, but he needs to make some adjustments! He has a good tactically based plan.
Weaknesses: Along with this title and semi, he also has 2 first round losses! His plan either works, or it doesn't.

Navak Djokovic
Grass Record: 10-3
Why?: It's almost impossible to pick a favorite! However, Djokovic has a title and a final on grass, so he's as good a pick as anyone! He know show to beat the top players, and how to win the titles. He's also very good at not wasting opportunities, and if he's given an easy draw, he takes advantage.
Strengths: He has a title and a final on grass, so he certainly knows how to win. His game plan is perfectly set up, and can really attack the top and lower ranked players.
Weaknesses: His draw, for sure. He has to play Monfils first round (another player that has won a grass title), and if he gets to the quarters he'll have to play Healey, who he has lost to twice in the grass season alone!

Andy Roddick [7]
Grass Record: 11-4
Why?: I know, it's a bit of a stretch to consider him a favorite, but the fact is: look at his record! He has a final, a semi, and a quarter on grass, and he really is very consistent. Granted, he hasn't taken that next step to a title yet, but when not here?
Strengths: His game is very basic, but very effective. He has the ability to beat the top players, and he has done it in the past.
Weaknesses: He hasn't yet won a title. As consistent as he may be, he hasn't yet taken that final step, so he's inexperienced. Also, his draw is a big weakness. Roger Federer is a great player, and it'll be a very tough first round match!

The Dark Horses
Roger Federer
Grass Record: 9-4
Why?: He made the final of London last week, and also made a grass semi. Although he doesn't have any "big" wins, he is very consistent and he has shown us that if he's given a draw, he takes advantage!
Strengths: His consistency, and his ability to beat lower ranked players. He isn't necessarily ready to beat the top seeds, but he has shown us that he can play very well.
Weaknesses: The fact that he has to play Roddick round 1, and that he hasn't yet won a title. Roddick is a very tough opponent to play first round, but it's certainly one Federer can handle. Plus, if he gets through that match, his draw gets easier, and he's already beaten Nadal! Although he has a final and a semi, like Roddick he hasn't yet won a title so that could be a down fall for him.

Gael Monfils
Grass Record: 7-3
Why?: He has a grass title, and he has beaten Ljubicic, Healey, and Chela. Not "huge" wins, but he has shown us that if he's on, he can definitely beat the top players. Djokovic is a tough first round, but if he can get through that he could certainly beat Healey and make the semis, maybe even run through to the finals-- then who knows what oculd happen!
Strengths: His "big" wins, and the fact that he does have a title. He has a bit of confidence coming in here, something that even the top seeds don't have.
Weaknesses: His inconsistency. Back in the first week of grass, he won the title, only to lose first round next week! I expect the same sort of thing here: he'll either lose first round to Djokovic, or make a run!

Rafael Nadal [2]
Grass Record: 1-4
Why?: He's the 2 seed, and he won the French Open! He has had a terrible grass season, but I wouldn't yet count him out! If he can make a few adjustments to his plan, he could certainly be a threat here.
Strengths: His experience. Even if he isn't entirely confident coming in here, he still has a grand slam under his belt and knows how to win.
Weaknesses: His record on grass. Although he won the French Open and is #2 in the world, he has a 1-4 record on grass-- that's terrible!

this tour just seems to work well that way. I think it is because it is so well organised and relaxed. It is weird, like on some other tours you could never put a tournament into 1/2 days but here it just seems right.

Mrs Elena Likhovtseva def Miss Ashley Harkleroad 6-4 3-6 6-4

'I really expected to make the semis here. I have had a great grass court season and knew coming into the event that I was one of the favourites. I have had a nice draw and Ashley fought hard but I knew when I had to step it up and I am pleased with the way I finished the match. Next up is the match we have all been waiting for. Too be honest, its the final. Everyone knows that and both of us are going to be given 100%. Flavia and Maria are playing well but they arent in our class. I really believe that I can take Amelie, I have won more matches than anyone else on grass this season and am determined to continue it here.'

Am I the only person who doesn't really like all of the results being posted so quickly?

I know it's nice to find out how you did without having to wait days until the final rounds, but by doing each round so soon after the previous one it doesn't give everybody satisfactory time to check how they've done and, if they want to, write articles, post comments, etc.

^you lost really early anyway, so I suppose it doesn't effect you massively. But Thomas did say he was going to make a POLL, voice your opinion there. :yeah:

Amelie is going to lose the Final, if Flav is pushing. :armed:

Like Amelie said, I'm going to make a poll to ask people's opinions. This was just a one tournament thing, to see how people felt. I decided that since only 1 person wrote articles the last few weeks (venus) that no one really wanted to write them  But, I'll definitely take your opinion and everyone else's into account before I do this again

I wish I had some sort of award to give Maria  Her points were definitely the best out of anyone's in the tournament. She would have won the tournament without losing a set (including to Mauresmo) if she hadn't run into Flavia in the semis

Obviously :ras: But you said it yourself-- it's hard to beat pushers, even with the best strategy. There's no way Maria could have predicted herself playing a pusher, especially not in the semis

thats harsh, its a tactic and fair play to Flavia if she wins because its not easy to push and win titles but its like what you said last week to everyone about Venus, it happens sometimes that the basic plans work

Sorry for giving away your strategy  We're changing points next week anyway, so it doesn't really matter

Wimbledon favourite loses in 1st round

Venus Williams reacts after missing a shot late in the third set against sister Serena Williams on Centre Court in round one of Wimbledon.

MISS S.WILLIAMS/Miss V.Williams 6-3,4-6,7-6(9-7)

Miss V.Williams - Just two questions please

MODERATOR - What happened in the tiebreak on match point?

Miss V.Williams - When I was up 6-5?

MODERATOR - Yes, that beautiful leap when Serena wrongfooted you, are you ok?

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/en/doc/2003-07/04/xinsrc_08b71948adfc11d795100004230fa5ee_Williams.j pg

Miss V.Williams - My leg hurts a little, and no I am not OK with this loss. One more question please.

MODERATOR - Are you upset you did not get a real glimpse at the title?

Miss V.Williams - Of course. Who wouldn't be. I was playing so great this past week, but I guess this event has been full of upsets. Thank you.
