Bonjour! Welcome to Paris,France the host of our second Grand Slam of the year! The French Open or better known as Roland Garros. Many players have had a great clay court season like Nikola Hofmanova and Jelena Jankovic, unlike Elena Dementieva and Serena Williams. Who will win the coveted title? Millions of dollars-1 trophy-1 winner..Who Will Win?

Preview:

Through the season we have seen so many players rise up the rankings such as Nikola Hofmanova, Sania Mirza and Urszula Radwanska. Now entering the French Open who are the hottest players? The Dark Horses???

Hot Players

Nikola Hofmanova
Nikola has had a great season after debuting in Doha. She has won titles in Miami,Berlin, and Amelia Island. She has risen to number 3 in the world and could be number one and she is the player to look out for. Also, this is her first grand slam.

Sania Mirza
After losing mentally tough finals in Antwerp and Miami, Sania Mirza has stayed a confident and consistent and one of the most consistent players on tour. Last week she won her first title in Rome, beating out players like Pennetta and U.Radwanska to win. Can she make a bigger breakthrough here??

The Dark Horses

Elena Dementieva
Serena Williams
Venus Williams
Maria Kirilenko
Flavia Pennetta
Jelena Jankovic

My Pick for the title:
Nikola Hofmanova

Kevin.

Na Li is in twice :o
Jie Zheng faces Dominika Cibulkova

Elena Baltacha should be a dark horse because most of her wins are over no.2 Serena Williams (she is 3-1)

"So, I face Baltacha in the first round, she has beaten my sister three times so I am nervous. I dont think I have played her, but she has a good tactical mind on her, so I believe anything will happen. I really want to do well here, first round loss is not an option so I have to play my best"

Sania Ready For France?

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/arrived.jpg
Newly crowned Italian Open champion, Sania Mirza arrives in Paris, France for the tour's second grand slam tournament of the year, the French Open.

India's sensation, Sania Mirza has arrived in Paris, France for the second grand slam tournament of the year, the French Open. Mirza who just came off of a huge victory, capturing her first Pro Tour singles title in Rome, Italy took a couple days to rest up before coming to the French capital. After winning the Italian Open, Mirza flew up four rankings to become the world's new fourth ranked player and will be the fourth-seeded player of the tournament.

"I'm very happy that I'm in the top five. It's a great feeling and I hope I can continue to go upward in the rankings and eventually become number one. A title here would definetly help that goal come true."

With a qualfying match already played today, Sania Mirza found out that she will be facing Julia Vakulenko who defeated American, Lindsay Davenport in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Both women were making their Pro Tour debuts at the French Open. Although Mirza has never played against Vakulenko or seen her play, she is still very optimistic about the outcome of the match.

"Well she's definently got nothing to loose and everything to gain. Newcomers are always dangerous because they can go out there with a mentality that is different from mine. If she looses it's that big of a deal, but if I loose, it will take me down a lot of rankings. I definently don't want to loose, espicially in a tournament where I'm considered a favorite to win the title."

And a favorite she is, earlier this morning, a preview was posted about the favorites for the title and the darkhorses of the tournament, the only two women to make the "favorites" list were three-time tour titlest, Nikola Hofmanova who won two clay court titles this year at Amelia Island and Berlin, and the Italian Open champion, Sania Mirza. When asked about being a favorite, Mirza seemed a little bit nervous.

"It definently adds a whole lot more pressure for me to win this tournament. If I loose to anyone besides Nikola, Elena [Dementieva], or Serena [Williams], it's going to be an upset because they are the only women that are higher than I am. I'm still a little tired after the match against Jelena Jankovic. She took a lot out of me and I still haven't gotten a full night's rest."

Whatever the outcome of the French Open for Sania Mirza may be, she has promised that this will be the best clay court tournament of the year. Already the attendance for the second grand slam of the season has broken records with audience members coming from every corner of the Earth, I think there may even be penguins here.

"I'm in it to win it. I've said that a lot and I haven't really stuck to it. After winning in Rome, I feel that I have the confidence and game that I need to beat the top players in the world. Julia will be a good first test and I plan on passing her with flying colors."

Na Li def. Brie Whitehead 7-6(2),1-6,6-1

Na played an amazing match! She beat a unconfident Brie. Brie and Na both had very disappoiting clay court seasons, but Na has had a worser season, so this is a very good lifting victory for Na. Na will face Elena Baltacha or no.5 seed Venus Williams.

Maria BARELY survives this match against a woman who has had a great resurging clay court season, so this is a great victory for Maria, who started at no.3 in the clay season and now sits at no.6, can she regroup to win the title and a top spot? Next she faces wither Margalita Chakhnashvili or Yuliana Fedak.

Mirza Vanquishes Vakulenko

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/san-1.jpg
India's Sania Mirza celebrates after defeating qualifier, Julia Vakulenko in the first round of the French Open in Paris, France.

The fourth-seeded player of the tournament, Sania Mirza had an bit of a hiccup in her match against qualifier, Julia Vakulenko, but she still used a series of power tennis to overwhelm the youngster and defeat her in a tough triple set match; 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

"The first set was definently tough. I lost six straight games which is never fun to do but later on in the match, I found my game and I just knew that I had the weapons to be beat her, I just needed to use them."

In a match that took a little over an hour, Mirza extended her win streak to five consecutive matches. Since winning her first singles title last week in Rome, we've seen a completely different Mirza on and off the court. Who knows, she may now have the confidence and determination to take the tournament and become the second grand slam champion of the season.

"I want to win so badly. This match today was definently a good one for me. It showed me what I need to work on. Julia played a great match and she'll have a very bright future in tournaments. I as well will have a bright future in tournaments but I'm going to focus on having a sucessful present in this tournament."

1st Round Loss Frustrates Zvonareva

http://www.zvonareva.ru/media/photo/oncourt/2006/2/30.jpg

Vera Zvonareva of Russia lost yet another first round match, this time to Tatiana Garbin of Italy.Zvonareva had beaten Garbin in their two previous meetings, first in the second round in Sydney, and again in the first round in Indian Wells. "It's just so frustrating, I mean I've beaten Tatiana twice before, and I know her game pretty well, I'm really tired of losing in the early rounds, this is so frustrating". Zvonareva, formerly ranked 10 in the world was unhappy with her play on the key points of the match "I really played well at certain times of the match, but on the key points, the deuces, the Ads, I just couldnt win them. I also think the key to my winning more matches is for me to be able to handle my emotions better, which I know will be difficult, but when I'm able to do that I think I can be a top 10 player." Zvonareva is playing doubles with the very successful Nikola Hoffmanova "Nikola is great, she's an extreemly talented player, and a wonderfull person, I believe we are contenders to win this tournement"

Venus' R16 Predictions

Elena Dementieva def. Anna Chakvetdaze 6-3 4-6 6-4
Elena can pull through any match, I think she may go all the way here
Nicole Vaidisova def. Tathiana Garbin 6-3 2-6 7-5
Nicole has a great coach and surely will not lose the chance for a GS QF.
Elena Baltacha def. Na Li 1-6 6-4 6-4
Elena has to be good to beat me so after beating me Elena should have the confidence to bag another win.
Sania Mirza def. Jie Zheng 7-5 7-5
If she keeps her confidence up, Sania should coast through
Francesca Schiavone def. Nikola Hofmanova 7-6 2-6 6-3
Nikola has won titles but I think she could get overconfident and Fran will sneak past.
Jelena Jankovic def. Silvia Farina-Elia 6-3 7-6
Jelena seems to be playing great and I think she will take advantage of a very good draw
Margalita Chakhnashvili def. Maria Kirilenko 2-6 7-5 6-1
Maria hasnt done anything for a long while and could continue to fall the wrong way as Maka will start to climb with a victory
Shuai Peng def. Martina Hingis 6-3 6-4 You have to be good to beat Serena and Peng will ease through with tons of confidence to boot.

Overview of Day One at Roland Garros

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/rg.jpg

The first round of the French Open has officially kicked off and we've seen upsets, miracles, beatdowns, and many other exciting matches that is going to be the best clay court tournament of the year!

Seed Survival-

For the first time in a couple of weeks, we've seen a large amount of seeded players advance to the second round. We got to see six out of the top eight seeds advance which includes: Elena Demenetieva(1), Nikola Hofmanova(3), Sania Mirza(4), Maria Kirilenko(6), Jelena Jankovic(7), and Tathiana Garbin(8).

The French Surrender-

France had three countrywomen carrying their hopes and dreams of a Frenchwoman winning the title. However those dreams came crashing down when Nathalie Dechy and Marion Bartoli were knocked out in straight sets and last Frenchwoman standing, Mary Pierce was knocked out in three by Italian, Silvia Farina-Elia.

Williams Family Nightmare-

She's struck again folks. The British nightmare to the Williams family, Elena Baltacha who has knocked out Serena Williams in three events this time claims another member of the Williams family, this time in the form of big sister, Venus Williams. Baltacha knocked out Venus Williams(5), in a tough triple setter to advance.

United States take a United Leave-

All of the American players have been knocked out of the tournament! There were four American players entered with two of them being seeded, (Serena Williams(2) and Venus Williams(5)). Horrible finish to the clay season for the Americans.

Favorites Flare Up the Field-

The favorites for the French Open Nikola Hofmanova and Sania Mirza continue their quests for a grand slam title. Hofmanova defeated France's own Nathalie Dechy; 6-2, 7-5. And Mirza defeated qualifier Julia Vakulenko in three sets; 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Red Dragon Rises-

By far the most sucessful country in the open is China. With a seed stunner, Shuai Peng who took out Serena Williams and fighters such as Jie Zheng and Na Li, China will definently be a country to expect many great things from!

Matches to Watch For-

Russian Rumble: Elena Dementieva(1) vs. Anna Chakvetadze

Two beautiful blonde bombshells going at in on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Elena who hasn't made much of a roar since the hard court season took a break, came back in France with a hard fought win over Urszula Radwanska. Anna on the other hand has been consistant by destroying Marion Bartoli in straight sets.

Favorite: Elena Dementieva in three.

American Conquerers: Elena Baltacha vs. Na Li

Elena Batlacha and Na Li both knocked out their American opponents in breathtaking fashions. However, it's now time for these two to take on each other on the red clay surface. Na has shown a resurgance and will be a tough competitor but Elena just defeated Venus Williams who is no easy cookie.

Favorite: Elena Baltacha in three sets.

That's all for today's overview, be sure to stay tunned and watch as Nikola Hofmanova and Sania Mirza continue their journey for a grand slam title and see what woman can stand in their way to claim the French Open title for herself. It's all here in Paris, France at Roland Garros!

BALTACHA OUSTS VENUS IN CLASSIC FRENCH OPEN 1ST ROUND MATCH

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:-ZCADag-IE_w7M:http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40736000/jpg/_40736215_baltacha.jpg

Great Britain's Elena Baltacha played a teriffic match today and was able to beat 5th seed Venus Williams in 3 tough sets. The match could have went either way and the turning point was in the 2nd set tie-break as Venus would have won the match if she won it, but Baltacha played some sparkling forehands and stormed through the tie-break and the 3rd set was the best set of tennis Baltacha has played this year. Baltacha eventually won the 2hr 22mins epic with a scoreline of 2-6 7-6 6-3.
After the match, Baltacha spoke to our reporter norts11. " I played great tennis in the 2nd and 3rd sets but i was so nervous in the 1st set, i couldn't even hit a forehand up the line. Clay is my worst surface and to beat the 5th seed at Roland Garros is incredibled,"

Next up for Baltacha is Na Li, who won 7-6 1-6 6-1. Baltacha spoke to norts11 about her next opponent, " She is a very good player and i'm sure we'll have a great match, i just hope i can play like i did today,"

(1)Elena Dementieva def. Anna Chakvetadze 1-6,6-4,6-4

Our number one QUALIFIES FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!! She basically qualified after Tokyo, but hey she is IN. Anna played a great match but couldn't hold off Elena long enough to win. Anna is playing great tennis lately, and I think if she commits she can win. Elena next faces (8)Tathiana Garbin or Nicole Vaidisova.

Tathiana surprisingly in the QF! She gets the lovely task of facing the world number one. Since Dubai, she has picked up her game flawlessly. Can she continue her wonderful game to the title? Nicole, wasted oppurtunites in the first and third sets. Tathiana faces (1)Elena Dementieva next.

BALTACHA THROUGH TO FIRST GRAND SLAM QUARTER FINAL

Elena Baltacha's dream run in Roland Garros continued today as she beat Na Li 3-6 7-5 6-4. The match was very close and could've gone either way but this week Baltacha has been as solid as rock and has played the big points better than anyone. At 5-5 in the 2nd set, Na Li was only 2 games away from the quarter-finals but she got broken to love with a couple of spectacular drop shots and a whizzing forehand return to secure the break. At 6-5, Baltacha served 4 rocket serves and each time followed them in to the net, where she gave Li no chance.
The 3rd set was Baltacha's best by a mile. She hit 15 winners and 11 unforced errors in the 3rd set and had a 1st serve % of 72%. At the end of the match Baltacha broke down and saluted the French crowd for all their support. This is only Baltacha's 3rd quarter-final of the year and only once has she advanced past the quarter-final stage. Baltacha is ranked outside the top 25 and is one of the bottom ranked players on the tour but with 3 wins over world number 2 Serena Williams, she has always had the potential to do well. After the week is over, Baltacha will have a significant leap up the rankings but Baltacha is aiming high and wants to win this week. " There are 8 very strong women left and i'll try as hard as i can to beat all of them, i've got a very tough task against Sania Mirza, but i believe that i can win if i get my tactics right this time."

Will Baltacha beat Mirza? Can she make a grand slam semi-final? Will she be the biggest underdog grand slam winner ever? Keep tuned to find out

Sania Conquers Zheng to Reach Quarters

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/Sania_Mirza-42-29.jpg
Fourth-seeded Sania Mirza blows kisses to her thousands of fans that came to watch her defeat Jie Zheng in their second round match at the French Open.

Would you expect anything less than another dominate win from Indian sensation Sania Mirza? Today she gave China's Jie Zheng the biggest beatdown of the tournament. She literally obliterated Zheng off the court winning; 6-2, 6-3. Finishing with 21 winners to 9 unforced errors and pounding a fantastic 5 aces past her opponent.

"I simply played an amazing game today. Right from the very first rally I fought hard against her. It's a great match to have under my belt since she beat me at Indian Wells. I can't wait for the quarterfinals to start."

Her quarterfinal opponent will be British rising star Elena Baltacha who defeated Jie Zheng's countrywoman, Na Li. Balatcha defeated Li in three sets; 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. This will be the first meeting between Mirza and Baltacha.

"She's been doing well for herself in this tournament. Without a doubt I plan on beating her. She's good but not good enough to beat me."

In other competition, top-seeded Elena Dementieva defeated fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze, third-seeded Nikola Hofmanova advanced in straight sets, seventh-seeded Jelena Jankovic won a marathon match and sixth-seeded Maria Kirilenko was stunned by Margalita Chakhnashvili. Also, Martina Hingis knocked out China's last hope, Shuai Peng.

"The competition is getting tougher, but I'm ready for it. I feel like I'm playing at a terrific level right now, but I'm nowhere near my best, and when I reach that point, everyone better watch out."

BALTACHA'S QUARTER-FINAL PREDICTIONS- NO HOLDING BACK!!

(1)Elena Dementieva vs. (8)Tathiana Garbin

I can't wait to watch this match, both players are brilliant and are on form. But to be honest, there is only going to be one winner and that's Dementieva, her game is too strong, she has more variety and is a very menacing opponent. I like both competitors and hope they have a great match.

PREDICTION - Dementieva in 3 sets

Elena Baltacha vs. (4)Sania Mirza

Lets not beat around the bush. Mirza is no where near strong enough to beat me. I'm going to win and by the end of the match, she will realise that i'm the most under-rated player on the tour. Get ready to lose Mirza.

PREDICTION- Baltacha in 3 sets

(3)Nikola Hofmanova vs. (7)Jelena Jankovic

Nikola beat me last week and any one that beats me can definitely beat Jankovic. Nikola is the best player in the world at the moment and in a way i want Jankovic to take her out, so i can win easier. But i would bet my house on Hofmanova.

PREDICTION- Hofmanova in 3 sets

Margalita Chakhnashvili vs. Martina Hingis

These 2 players are very lucky to be facing each other in the quarter-final of a grand slam. Hingis's points are said to be pretty poor, i hope they have a good match and one of them takes advantage of the brilliant situation they are in. I'm almost 100% sure that Margalita will win. She is way to strong for Martina.

PREDICTION- Chaknashvili in 2 sets

Elena has already qualified for the YEC and that is amazing. She is on cloud nine at the moment and Garbin isnt going to bring her down today. Elena should breeze thorough

Elena is an imprvoing player but Sania is in from right now and knows how to adapt better than anyone else. This is a GS QF and I dont see Sania choking the chance away

Sania 3-6 6-2 7-5

(3)Nikola Hofmanova vs. (7)Jelena Jankovic

Jelena has beaten me and Nikola hasnt. If I cant figure your gameplan out you must be good. Jelena is in great form but watch out for 'best player on tour hofamanova'!!

A Statement from Sania

Sania Mirza has a comment for Elena Batlacha about her statement when she said she will defeat Sania and advance to the semi-finals.

"She wishes she could beat me. I mean, come on, I won Rome, I was a runner-up in Antwerp and Miami. What has she done? Exactly. She got lucky against Venus, and Na really isn't that much of a competitor nowadays. Elena has had a great run to the quarterfinals but now she's gonna face me. And I hope she's had a fun time in Paris because I'm going to be sending her home."

BALTACHA BATTLES BACK

Elena Baltacha was laughing when she heard Sania Mirza's comments made earlier tday, Baltacha told me, " She thinks she can beat me, i feel sorry for her, she's going to feel so bad after losing tomorrow, to be fair she has had some lucky draws and got to an odd final, but class will always win in the end, and i'll show her that tomorrow."

Baltaha ws also shocked to find out that Venus Williams has bet against Batacha winning and thinks that Mirza will prevail. " I'm shocked that the woman that i beat in the 1st round is not on my side, i've beaten her sister 3 times and now beaten her once, when will she learn tha i am the best player the world hs ever seen,"

Baltacha is a very confident lady and if she does lose, she is going to feel very stupid.

Venus Lashes out at Sania

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/mirza_show.jpg
Venus Williams throws a ball at Sania Mirza when she's clearly not looking becuase Venus is jealous of Mirza's talent and that she's still in competition for the French Open title.

Because she's had a tough week, loosing in round one in the French Open and wanting to be the Article Whore of the Week this week but falling short to the amazing, entertaining, fantastic articles of Sania Mirza, Venus Williams has lashed out at Sania Mirza, trying to attack her while Sania was training on a clay court. She threw a tennis ball at Mirza who ducked at the last minute. Mirza who is full of class decided not to retaliate and whoop Venus' ass. But she did have this to say:

"It was totally childish of her to throw a tennis ball at me. She's lucky that I'm still in this tournament and that I didn't want to get disqualified for beating her down. But she better watch out for when this tournament is over."

B**** Please!

Another statement from the darling of the Pro Tour, Sania Mirza.

"If Elena thinks she's going to send me home, she's got one more screw loose then I thought. Just because she's beaten the Williams sisters, she thinks she's all bad. If we were playing right now I bet I would kick her flabby old butt all over the court. But talk doesn't mean anything when you can't back it up.
