Sania Mirza hits a couple of tennis balls to the audience after defeating Jelena Jankovic and winning the Italian Open.

India's Sania Mirza has captured her first Pro Tour singles title in Rome, Italy and has assured herself a seeding for the French Open, the tour's second grand slam tournament. Mirza who is a two time finalist on tour, captured her maiden title in an hour and forty-seven minutes with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win over Serbian, Jelena Jankovic.

"Oh man, I'm so excited right now. I can't believe that I won. I honestly thought I was going to loose in the quarterfinals against Flavia, but when I beat her, it was really a confidence booster since I've lost to her in back to back clay tournaments."

After battling past a tough test from former Junior Tour player gone Pro, Urszula Radwanska, the Indian sensation seemed to have a spurt of energy in the first set again Jankovic, easily taking the first set 6-2. However, Jelena fought tooth and nail and absolutely dominated the second set with an even more impressive 6-1 victory in the second set.

In the third set both women traded early breaks but towards the end of the set at 4-4, Sania was able to get the break she needed to serve out the match. Jelena was able to save one championship point but on the second one at 40-30, Mirza was just too tough for the Serb and cracked a backhand winner down the line.

"It's been such a long road to get here. I can't wait for Paris though, I definately think I'm going to be a threat there. Actually, I think I'm a threat everywhere, and this win here proves it."
