Week #15
WTA: Eastbourne

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/3/global/graphics/logos/eastbourne_2007new.jpg

Welcome everyone to Eastbourne for the International Women's Open, the final grass event before Wimbledon! Last week, we saw Maria Sharapova reach yet another final, but the real story was Lindsay Davenpor, who prevailed and took home her first title! Second ranked Amelie Mauresmo (who was seeded number 1 at all grass tournaments because of Bammer's absence) won her first match of the grass season last week, and Sacha Jones (the 2nd seed, ranked 3rd) moved to 0-3 and remained winless on grass. Will the top seeds continue to struggle this week, or will they regain their winning form just in time for Wimbledon? The tour would like to "welcome back" Sybille Bammer, who will be playing in her first grass court event of the year!

For the final men's event before Wimbledon, we're in London for the Artois Championships. Last week, former world number 1 Nathan Healey prevailed, taking home his 3rd title of the year by beating 5th ranked Harley Radford. Like the women's, the men's seeds have also been struggling as of late. Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal has only won one match on grass, but for the first time in a long time last week week we saw 2 seeds face off in the final! Will their form continue into this week, or will a new champion prevail? I'd like to welcome Ivan Ljubicic back to the tour, who has been missing during the entire grass season!

Jagger Predicts the Women's Draw
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u87/ldavenport24/AI10909161204.jpg
WMFT pro Lindsay Davenport's son, Jagger Leach, sat down with tournament officials yesterday to give his thoughts on this week's women's draw, and to predict what he though the outcome would be
First of all, I'd like to start by saying that my predictions/comments are entirely unbiased, and I show no favoritism toward any players, no matter how close to me they are (*caugh* Lindsay *caugh*). Because this is the last grass court event before Wimbledon, and especially because it's a Tier I, everyone will be playing at their top level and I expect to see some incredible matches! Below I've listed who I think are the FAVORTIES for the title, DARKHORSES that could pull off upsets or even make runs to the late stages of the tournament, and PREDICTIONS for the entire women's draw.

WTA: Eastbourne

The Favorites
Lindsay Davenport [5]
No, it's not because she's my mother! You just can't ignore the fact that Lindsay raced through the draw last week, and did so by beating the world number 2 and number 6! She played incredibly, and if she can continue that this week very few players will be able to beat her! On time of last week's results, she was also a semifinalist in 's-Hertogenbosch 2 weeks ago! She's got an incredible game, and when she's on she plays as good as, if not better than, the top 3 players.

Maria Sharapova
Even though she's unseeded here, she has really showed her talent during this grass season! With the exception of her 1st round loss at 's-Hertogenbosch, Sharapova has certainly been one of the top players on grass. She made the final last week (losing to Davenport in 3 tight sets) by beating the 4th ranked Kirilenko, and in the first week of grass in Birmingham she had yet another final, beating the 8th ranked Ivanovic and again, the 4th ranked Kirilenko, losing to Venus in 3 VERY CLOSE sets in the final. Even though she hasn't beating any of the top 3 players, I believe it's only because she has gotten to play them! She has a strategy designed to take out the big guns, and so far this grass season it has worked!

Sybille Bammer [1]
Yes, Sybille hasn't played at all on grass. Yes, she lost her only match at the Beijing Team Championships. However, you cannot ignore the fact that A: she's the number 1 player in the world, and B: she won the French Open. Yes, grass is a different surface, but Sybille still has one of the top 3 (if not top 2, if not the best!) game on the WTA Tour, and for that reason she's a favorite in any tournament she enters-- no matter the circumstances. And, I needed a 3rd favorite... :o

The Dark Horses
Elena Likhovtseva
I've said all along that Elena has a top game on the tour, and she showed that in 's-Hertogenbosch, winning the tournament. And, en route to the title, she beat 3rd ranked Sacha Jones! Elena has a top player-"like" game, but it's not quite to their level yet. She's doing well to adjust and get closer to that point, and with time she'll be there! She's shown us she can win titles, she shown us she can beat the top players, now she has to show she can do it consistently!

Tamira Paszek
Tamira is the sort of dark horse that doesn't really have the game to take the title, but has the game to pull off upsets and certainly make a deep run! I still stress the fact that her strategy is VERY original. The really top players know how to beat it, but against the lower seeds she can really do damage. If given the right draw (which, her's is pretty good) she could make it very deep into the tournament.

Ljubicic and Bammer Return To Tour

http://www.fft.fr/cms/ColdData/docs/15/1522.jpg

WMTF #6 Ivan Ljubicic and French Open winner Sybille Bammer will be returning to the tour after both players recovered from their respective injuries. They have missed three grass court events coming into the respective tournaments.

Ljubicic, who is the current Medibank International Open winner, has suffered from lingering shoulder even before Roland Garros began. He still played for the Beijing Team Championship though and successfully won their team only 2 matches(in mixed doubles with Justine Henin and men's doubles with Mikhail Youhzny).“It’s definitely great to be on tour again and hopefully I'll be able to get some match play before Wimbledon although grass is in fact my worst surface. But I'll try to do my best for sure."

The Croation is still yet to win a match since his quarterfinal exit in Monte Carlo.

It was a different story for the women's #1 player Bammer, who also participated in the team championship after a grand slam victory in Paris. However, she suffered from a left foot injury when she played in her singles match against Flavia Pennetta and eventually lost the match in straight sets. She also lost her doubles match with Justine Henin in the championship.

http://sportard.wdr.de/sp/tennis/news200706/01/img/01_bg_bammer_dpa_400.jpg

"I'm pretty disappointed with the way I played and I also made myself injured.I'm so mad at that time.I was trying to play well but it was just pathetic as the tournament goes on.I'd like to apologize to the team for the losses."said the player who now has 3 titles this season. However, after the break, the #1 player is pretty confident on her comeback.

"It's definitely not easy when you're out for a certain period of time.I still follow the tour even without playing in it and all I can say is the tour has changed pretty much now.So I will just have to play my best and try to test the water with some changes in my game plan.I don't put too much expectations this time but hopefully it works.I've played better even on my worst surface(Rebound Ace) earlier this season. So we'll just see what happens.Anyway,I'm still glad to recover on time and appear on the event."continued the #1 player.

She will possibly face grass-court specialist,Elena Likhovsteva in the second round."Well,we last met in Estoril where I lost in a close three set match. She also has won a title last couple of weeks(s'-Hertogenbosch).So hopefully I'll get my revenge this time which I'm unlikely to do so(laugh)."

Second Round Results

E.Likhovtseva def. S.Bammer [1] 7-5 6-7(5) 7-5 :eek::eek:
-Bammer goes for too much in a few games, Elena just waited through those and won the big games. It was a close match, one Sybille definitely could have won, and with a little more work she'll be back to the top! Elena, like always, has a great game plan and really did it well here

N.Li def. A.Radwanska 6-4 7-5
-I really like Agnieszka's points, but like Sybille she goes for a little too much in too many games. Na has sort of the middle-of-the-road player's game, and it works well against certain players- Radwanska being one of them!

V.Williams def. A.Ivanovic [6] 6-0 6-0
-It baffles me that the 6th seeded player can't defend against Venus-like points. There's not much to say about this may-- Ivanovic had a good plan, but Venus' game plan just out played her

T.Tanasugarn def. M.Kirilenko [4] 6-2 6-3
-Wow, this is a surprising result. Maria has really good points, but Tamarine's just worked extremely well against her. Tamarine didn't necessarily have the better points, but she was a bit lucky and was all around more "effective" in her style of play

S.Jones [3] def. A.Harkleroad 6-3 6-3
-This was a good win for Sacha, she really needed to get an easy win after her results lately. Ashley's points are very simple, and they'll work well against lower ranked players, and she lately has taken advantage of all the top players being upset. However, when she herself has to play a top player, her points don't usually work too well.

E.Baltacha def. L.Davenport [5] 6-7(0) 6-4 6-4
-This was a tough 2nd round match up, and it's rather surprising that Elena won. Granted, Baltacha is a very good player, especially several tournaments back, but Davenport has just been on a hot streak. Both players have good points, and it really was just a few points separating them.

A.Chakvetadze [7] def. N.Dechy 6-4 3-6 7-5
-After Dechy 'upset' Sharapova in the first round, she really went up against it here. I really like Nathalie's points, they're strong and effective, but Chakvetadze just has the game to beat her. Really the last set could have gone either way, and and the first 2 sets were only separated by a few points

A.Mauresmo [2] def. J.Henin 7-6(0) 7-6(0) :worship:
-This is a good win for Amelie. Justine is a tough opponent, and Mauresmo has been struggling, so it's good for her to get this in straight sets. Amelie's points were just, better

Congrats to all women's quarterfinalists

Williams resurgant in Grass Season

Venus Williams volleys to Ana Ivanovic seeded sixth during the Eastbourne Championships. Williams won 6-0, 6-0.

Venus Williams has begun her grass resurgance at the Eastbourne Championships in London. Williams won 6-0,6-0 over sixth seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia. Venus hit 30 winners to only 5 unforced errors. Williams won the first title of the season, but eversince, has fell in a slump.

"I feel like I am playing better with my 'winning ways'" said Williams.

Venus plays a VERY aggressive game where she serves and volleys, and swing volleys. Although this game tactic is dangerous, Venus LIVES for the thrill. She next faces Tamerine Tanasungarn. GO VEE!

E.Likhovtseva def. N.Li 6-2 6-3

Na's strategy is very simple, not a lot of variety, and she paid for that against Elena. She mixes things up well, and really kept Na guessing. Na does well in dividing her points up, getting some high and some low games in there, but she needs to go for a bit more in a couple games, at least, especially if she wants to go to the next level and beat the bigger players. As for Elena, she may want to go for a bit more in a few games, but other than that her strategy is really solid.

I still don't understand how players are still losing to Venus 6-0 6-0. Back when Tamira used this strategy to win a tournament, she did not win another match for 3 weeks because people adjusted to it. The players on the tour are getting lazy, and Venus is really making them pay. All credit to her, because she's using a strategy that works-- but I'd consider at least mixing it up a little if you plan on winning Wimbledon!

Elena is really starting to get her form back that she won Estoril. She has come up with a very original strategy, and it has been effective for her, at least this week. It's not necessarily the best, as we've seen the last couple weeks, but when given a good draw she makes the best of it. Sacha, you need to scrap this strategy. It's original, but just look at it-- there are too many flaws!

A.Mauresmo [2] def. A.Chakvetadze [7] 6-2 5-7 6-1

Thank god we've finally got a top seed that is doing some winning :o. There aren't really any major flaws with Amelie's points, except that she maybe doesn't go for enough at times, and when she plays a (low ranked) player who has a simple but effective strategy, she's getting beat. Against the top players, Amelie is amazing, but she has to get out of her first few rounds first! As for Anna, you don't really go for enough in the big games. Take away some of the medium games and build up some "big" games. Your points are good though-- well balanced and that's why you've got the ability to make the quarters/semis.

Let's take it home Ame:armed:

I WOULD LOVE TO PLAY VENUS JUST TO SHOW HOW RUBBISH HER STRATEGY REALLY IS.

Anyone who loses to her is simply PATHETIC.

Venus surges to semis
Williams yet to lose a game
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/505/12003-ausopen427.jpg
Venus Williams slams a backhand down Tamerine Tanasungarn's throat in the quarterfinals of the Eastbourne Championships. Williams won 6-0, 6-0.

The most aggressive grasscourt player has eased and powered her way into the Eastbourne semifinals by overpowering Tamerine Tanasungarn 6-0,6-0. Venus has been criticized for her over-aggressive play all week, but the tactic has been working smoothly for the American.

"I guess this style works for me, I can play with aggression and still win, which I think is making others jealous." Williams stated.

Venus will next face Elena Likhovsteva who won over Na Li of China. Venus faced her earlier this year en route to her first career title, and the Russian stands in her way of a possible second title on the year. GO VEE!
