Sania Sinks in Semis

After a terrible start to her clay court season, loosing in back to back early rounds, Sania Mirza of India reached the semi-finals of the teir 1 event, the Qatar German Open. However, the sucess would not last long as she lost to swashbucking Italian, Tathiana Garbin. Mirza lost in a tough triple setter 4-6, 6-2, 5-7. Which gave Garbin a ticket to the finals in which she got a thrashing from Nikola Hofmanova 6-3, 6-3.

"I played okay here. A semi-final appearence has given me a bit more confidence and I think in my next event I shall play well."

Mirza's next event is still unknown to her because of the way the tournament draw is structured. The first 16 women to committ to the tournament are in, this new rule doesn't sit well with some of players on tour.

"I think that the top eight should automatically be in the tournament." said Antwerp champion, Venus Williams.

"I don't really think that it's a good idea at all." said Sania Mirza. "If Mary [Pierce] doesn't get to play at the events I'm playing in, we won't get to play doubles together anymore. I didn't get to play doubles in Qatar because she wasn't there and I don't really like this new idea too much at all."

It is unknown if the rules of tournaments will be changed, but one thing is for sure, it's not the last we'll be hearing of this. It could possibly have a great effect on many of the world's top doubles team, it already has for the second ranked doubles team in the world, Sania Mirza and Mary Pierce.

"Hopefully something will be changed, Mary and I have won three titles together, I'm not going to change partners mid-season. That's an insult. We'll have to see what happens next week."
