 Action In Warsaw starts of with a bang here as the Romanians take out the world number 1 in the first match. Great play from Sorana who took apart Yan here. The Chinese could now be in danger of losing their number 1 ranking if their main rivals do well here.

Good win from Clay Specialist Flavia. She has a good draw and hopefully can take full advantage of it to get back in the shape that saw her get to the Australian Open SF. The Americans arent clay fans but did very well to give a fight but overall, Flavia was too strong.

The Dreaded Clay For Americans

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/593/ROG110052812_1024x768.jpg

After claiming their first title in Quebec City last week, the United States were put out first round in Warsaw. It is no secret that the Americans dread the red clay, but after today's 6-3, 1-6, 1-6 loss to Flavia Pennetta it was a little more evident.

"I'm not happy with my play, or the conditions here in Poland. It is freezing cold and the clay is playing exceptionally slow, which does not benefit the Americans playing here. I'm bitter at the loss and the conditions we had to play in, although Flavia did play a fantastic second and third set. She should do well here."

Fujiwara failure

http://www.yonex.co.jp/img/player/tennis/2006/20.jpg
Fujiwara delivered 10 double faults on her way to a 6-0 6-0 defeat

They may not be at home on clay, but the Japanese team handed in their worst performance of their career today, as Rika Fujiwara suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the second seeded Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-0 6-0.

After missing the deadline to play in Forest Hills, the team jetted out to the Polish capital, where they soon found out they would be playing the Spanish team. This was an optimum tie for the Spaniards, who lost in the Auckland final to Japan.

Fujiwara, making her singles debut, started off strongly as she raced into a 40-0 lead on the Dominguez serve. However, it was false hope, as she couldn't deal with the spins coming from the racket of the Spaniard and fell to defeat in less than 40 minutes.

"I don't like the clay. My captain just told me to give it a go and try my best. We weren't very confident, but we just had to go out there and try. We failed. Onto next week," commented a bemused Fujiwara.
