WTT Fed Cup - First Round

http://i22.tinypic.com/2n74l7b.jpg

The WTT has gone global this week as every team on the tour will play in the first round of the fed cup in different countries in the world. Shocks and suprises are expected along with some great tennis so get ready for a great week of WTT Tennis.
The Tournament will start on Thursday 18th. This is giving everyone a week to send in points and line-ups so there is no exceptions. Failiure to send in the points etc could end in retirement. Good luck to all the countries.

Surfaces aren't a big problem normal as there are some tournaments, so you can choose. For Fed Cup now you already have no chance if you lost the draw. And the Fed Cup is event over whole the year. So maybe it's better to give everyone equal points at Fed Cup.

Either everyone has the same amount of points - this will make Fed Cup a better compettion and we will really figure out who are the best players of the game
Or we use Surface Points - This is a big part of the WTT but then Fed Cup wont be exciting and its pretty likely that the surface pickers will win.

Crap decision. I thought WTT was all about surfaces and points. Yeah ok, some players may get better draws, if they get to choose the surface, but that's part of the tour. On the real tour when they have Fed Cup, they don't pick a surface that every player will like, they pick ones that they are likely to win on :o :tape:

Japan in Fed Cup withdrawal threat

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/3/global/photos_rx/morigami_7855_rx.jpg
Akiko Morigami looks on during a practice session in Gifu

Newcomers Japan threaten to pull out of the WTT Fed Cup competition following the decision to allow all players to have an equal chance over the course of the tie.

The majority of the complaints came, not surprisingly, from the Dutch team, who Japan were set to face in the opening round of the competition. The Dutch team were not happy with the fact that Japan had chosen a quick grass court to play their tie on, as the home team would have an overwhelming advantage. In a press conference in Gifu, the location of the tie, Ayumi Morita and Akiko Morigami both made their views well known:

"I am absouletly stunned by this decision. WTT is a tour which is designed around different surfaces and making decisions as to where we play. Fed Cup does have an element of luck that goes with it, but hey, that is something you have to deal with. The Dutch team are only upset because they feel that, seeded seventh, they shouldn't have to play against a team like us. Their only concern is the fact that we were smart enough to chose a surface on which we would beat them hands down. They say that its likely the surface pickers will win the tie, but we can't help that. It's not our fault that we are making the most of our fortune" ranted Morita.

"If they got to chose, they would almost certainly play on clay, especially as it is our worst surface. However, we wouldn't be complaining about it. We would just go out there and try to play our best tennis. Like Ayumi said, they don't want to play on a surface which they can't handle. If the director allocates 200 points to each team, then what is the point of playing? Unless we see surface points reinstated, then we will not play Fed Cup," added Morigami.

On an additional note, Aiko Nakamura has made a strong start on the rebound ace in Auckland, winning her opening two round robin matches.

because I have 16 ties to do that equals lots of matches to score :p

After QF then we will go best of 5 ;)

And I knew people would be unhappy but look at it this way. Its better for the tour to have 7-6 6-7 7-6 matches than 6-0 6-0 ones...the Fed Cup is all about finding the best countries on tour and thats what it will do with Equal Points...I know the WTT is all about surface points and thats why we have two tournaments a week but its also about good compeition which is what the Fed Cup will be with this points score.

Patch, it is a good idea, but I feel that the decision for surface points or equal points should have been made before the draw and locations/surfaces chosen. If you had have done it, then the Dutch team wouldn't have spent all their time complaning to get their own way.

Gigi, even if the Netherlands had the home advantage, I wouldn't mind, because even though they would pick a surface they would win on, I would just have a go and see what happened. It's only a game :o

Why on earth would I be scared of you. I'm just saying that if we re-did the draw with the new rules in place, maybe it wouldn't mean you would start kicking off again  If you got to pick the surface we were playing on, you would have picked clay, which you would beat me on. Your problem is that you didn't want to lose in the first round against a team who had a bit of luck and used it to their adavantage :o

Patch, I'm not complaining, but I'm simply trying to say that maybe we should have decided on the surface points/equal points rule before the draw was made. That way certain teams (no names needed  ) wouldn't complain if they didn't get their own way

Press Conference With Team Sweden

Q: Welcome Team Sweden, how do you feel as the Fed Cup draws closer ?

A: (Sofia) You know its a honour to play for this team, nerves are always going to be there and everybody deals with it in their own way.

Q: Your opponents Ukraine, how much respect do you have for them ?

A: (Michaela) Alot, they have two great singles players who are very consistant and a solid doubles pairing, it will be tough.

Q: Johanna what kind of form are you in coming into the opening tie ?

A: (Johanna) Im feeling good, no niggles and my timing is reasonable considering the little practice i've had due to flu which i am now fully recovered from.

Q: The doubles may be key throughout the Fed Cup, how positive are you about this ?

A: (Hanna) Me and Michaela work well toghether, we both show alot of emotion on the court and it works well because we never give up.

Q: Michaela your tournament debut this year, how well are you playing ?

A: (Michaela) I've practiced alot with Hanna and i've timed it well, also me and Nadja Roma (a leftie) hit for some time and i was hitting extremly well plus i have some practice at returning a Left handed players serve. In terms of doubles practice me and Hanna have been playing Sofia and Johanna it gives us practice and also it helps their volleys for singles.

Q: Nick, why have you chosen this team in particular ?

A: Um, Sofia and Johanna both play well in singles on the fed cup stage also Hanna and Mickan (Michaela) get on extremely well and that helps in doubles they also know eachother's games so well.

Press Conferance with Sweden's singles players from Day 1

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/1768/tennispresmidbh1.png

Q: Well Sofia, you started with a win and the team has won the tie, how are you feeling?

A: I started slowly today, the courts were quick and I was serving really well, to win the tie on the opening day is very positive. We feel very happy overall with our performance, and i hope we continue this way !

Q: Johanna, great match and a win for you. How well did you think you played ?

A: I felt nervous at the start, however once I got going i felt the buzz, the vibrant Stockholm fans certainly helped (Laughs). Its great we have won, but Mickan and Hanna are still going to give 100% in the doubles tommorow, are attitude is one that believes in hard work !
