Henin Wins US Open

New York,USA-Justine Henin becomes the first player in WFTC history to win three grand slams in a row after defeating Mary Pierce of France 67(1) 63 61 in the final of the US Open.She also ties the record with Pierce as the only players who hold 3 majors.

It wasn't easy for the petite Belgian to win the coveted title as she needed to win 4 consecutive matches.She had a first round bye before facing Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine in the second round.Bondarenko beat Henin before in the first grand slam in Melbourne this year but Henin wasn't on her best that time.After winning the French Open and Wimbledon,Henin was determined not to let the Ukrainian deter her chances for a third grand slam.It ended up WFTC #3 won the match straight sets 61 76(5).Her stats looked pretty good and she admitted after the match that she was playing very comfortably during the match and was happy with her performance.

Henin met Tatiana Panova of Russia in the quarterfinal.Both of them had met only once before this matchup with Henin winning her in the semifinal in Eastbourne in a hard fought three setter.This match was also not an exception.Although both player eventually ended up with more unforced errors than winners,the match was in a rather good quality with all the dramas.Henin eventually took her chances and went on to be the one of the semifinalists in the hardcourt tournament after eliminating the sixth seeded Russian 64 36 64.

In the semifinals,her opponent was her nemesis-WFTC #1 Alicia Molik.Both players won 2 matches against each other before this match and this was also another tense match between these two top players.Henin won the first set easily before the defending champion stepped up her game and claimed the second 6-3.It was a much tougher in the third set where both players played some brilliant tennis in some games but it was Henin who was much better in the end of the match and Molik couldn't hold on her nerves.Henin won the third set 7-5 and also leads their head-to-head record to 3-2.

The final was a repeat of the Wimbledon final of the same season where Henin faced Pierce.Henin started off the match with a dominating style when she led the French 5-0 in the first set.However,she wasted 8 set points and Pierce cameback to level the set and it went to a tiebreak.The Frenchwoman,who is better known as the "Queen Of Tiebreakers" by her peers,won that tiebreak without breaking a sweat.It was also a similar situation in the second set where the #3 seed held a 5-0 break before Pierce rallied and tried to do the same as the first set but Henin gained her experience this time and closed out the set 6-3.Pierce couldn't maintain her momentum and Henin once again gave her a breadstick as in the deciding set of the final in London.

"I am really speechless right now.I was so thrilled when I finally won this title.I wasn't playing that well like I did during the middle of the season.But I somehow got my rhythm back during the tournament and luckily I met players where I am used to play with.At least I know what kind of game plan they're used to play with and tried to improve what I could as the matches went on.Anyway,I did much better than I expected since I only won one match coming into the event.I was actually enjoying every moment I had on court with a relaxing mood and perhaps that was the biggest factor to ,I really thank god for that and of course myself for having much faith and determination in myself.I really appreciate what I have now and hopefully I'm able to continue my form till the end of my career."said the Belgian after the match.

She also won one match against Mary Pierce/Maria Kirilenko 26 76(0) 75 in the doubles event with partner-Elena Dementieva before losing to eventual finalist and #4 seed Lindsay Davenport/Svetlana Kuznetsova 61 16 64 in the semifinal.Unseeded pair Elena Baltacha/Amelie Mauresmo surprised everyone to win the doubles title after making a couple of upsets en route to their first title together.

With the victory in New York City,Henin has improved her ranking to her career high-#2 by overtaking her doubles partner who dropped to #3.Molik is still the #1 player of WFTC with a hug gap in terms of ranking points between the top two.Henin also now holds five titles-ITF Madrid,French Open,Eastbourne,Wimbledon and US Open.
