Kevin. Oct 1st, 2007, 01:17 AM Welcome to Doha,Qatar, our last stop in the Middle Eastern section of the season. Last week we saw a returning vengence of Tathiana Garbin to win in Dubai, defeating Elena Dementieva in a straight-set finals, will she be able to do it again, or will we have a new titlist?

Kevin. Oct 1st, 2007, 01:17 AM Preview:
Top seed Elena Dementieva has a first round bye, she will face the winner of Schiavone-Peng.
Shuai Peng vs. Franchesca Schiavone:Shuai had a career-best week with a QF showing at Dubai with a three set loss to Brie Whitehead. Franchesca has not shown alot on tour, and she shows some potential, right now by seasonal record, I will go with Shuai for the win.
Sania Mirza vs. Jie Zheng:Jie is 0-1, losing by a walkover. Sania is a different story, she had a great week a couple weeks ago in Antwerp, making the finals, losing in a three set battle to Venus Williams, which she had match points with, can she make another run here? She will face the winner of 8th-seeded Jelena Jankovic and Brie Whitehead.
(8)Jelena Jankovic vs. Brie Whitehead:Jelena is becoming a very consistent player on the tour, but she defitnely can improve on her game quite a bit, if she can do that she can create some major damage. Brie has had quite a run making the semifinals of Dubai last week, this will be a close one.
(5)Jennifer Capriati vs. Na Li:Jennifer made the Antwerp finals, but everything else she has quite not lived up to her potential. Even a worse case for Na Li, her points are outstanding, but she always loses close matches, and it is sad to see. By rankings Jennifer would win, and I would say Jennifer in a nice three setter.
Michaella Kraijcek vs. Elena Baltacha:Elena has already shown she can hang with the top dogs of the tour, beating Serena Williams in Antwerp and holding match points against Venus Williams pushing her to the limit, no doubt she has potential and talent, but is still waiting for that breakthrough, Michaella on the other hand has shown inconsistency, and she can have some potential if she works on it, right now I am leaning towards Elena for the win.
Nikola Hofmanova vs. Margalita Chaknashvili:This is Nikola's first event. Welcome Nikola! Margalita started off strong with QF finishes at Tokyo and the Australian Open, now she is out of the top 10 and has had dismal results, if Nikola can counterattack Margalita, I can see a upset.
(4)Venus Williams vs. Vera Zvonareva:Venus has had one heck of a tour so far by making the semis of Dubai and won Antwerp the week before and is becoming a consistent player, recently cracking the top 5, can defitnely be number one. Vera is returning to the tour slowly but surely. But I don't think she will pull an upset.
3rd-seeded Maria Kirilenko has a bye
Flavia Pennetta vs. Vilmarie Castellvi:As much as I still dislike Flavia's strategy it still works for her against top players. Vilmarie grabbed her first win last week in Dubai, so her confidence is there, and who knows maybe she can pull off a win.
Martina Hingis vs. Silvia Farina-Elia:Silvia has a career high of no.11 and was a few points within top 10 after AO (jsut like the real SFE ) now she has had dismal 1st round losses, and Martina is trying to pick up her first win, so this will be interesting.
(6)Tathiana Garbin vs. Jelena Dokic:Tathiana had a fantastic week by winning the Dubai title and POTW so she has 10 extr apoints, so I can see her going far, Jelena just got bad luck in the draw for her debut, I hope she can scout and hope for a good result.
(7)Nicole Vaidisova vs. Anna Chakvetdaze:Anna has the capablitity of producing stellar victories and she has done that, but despite a few ranking spots, Nicole is a very aggressive player, and it shows, after a good beginning of the season, she is declining a bit, but still has that fire after a huge win over Sania Mirza last week.
Alona Bondarenko vs. Dominika Cibulkova:Probably two of the most committed players (including Kirilenko), face off, they have a pretty good draw, they can make a breakthrough, I think Dominika knows what she is doing, but is apprehensive about her points, meanwhile Alona isn;t and completly tries to dominate early and late, this one should be live scored but I dont do live score for 1st round matches :p
Nathalie Dechy vs. Mary Pierce:Two Frenchwomen face off for a spot against second seeded Serena Williams, Nathalie grabbed her first win over Maria Sharapova by a walkover and retired after that, hopefully she can make a good breakthrough. Mary hasn't gotten a true win yet, but has a good possibility this week.
2nd-seeded Serena Williams has a bye.

The Muslim crowd in Doha are attending in the masses to see crowd favorite Sania Mirza in action against Chinese player, Jie Zheng. The tennis sensation, Mirza, arrived in Doha a couple days early to get some much needed practice in before the tournament started. Mirza is the heavy favorite to win against Zheng who is seeming to be having health issues at the moment.
Recently, Sania was stunned in the first round of Dubai by the seventh seeded Nicole Vadisova, whom she beat the prior week in Antwerp where Mirza reached her first career final and eventually lost to American, Venus Williams. Mirza comes to Doha with a new game strategy and plans to make the same noise here as she did in Belguim.
"It's always great to be the crowd favorite. It makes me feel really special and it's great to have the crowd behind you."
This is the third consecutive tournament that Mirza's been the crowd favorite. She won over hearts in Antwerp and went to Dubai already a crowd favorite but her time in the lime light was cut short when she lost in the first round. Mirza claimed to have been plagued by fatigue from her match against Williams in the Proximus Diamond Games final.
"I was in a lot of pain. My body still hadn't healed 100% and I really had no buisness out on the court, but I didn't want to disappoint the crowd who had come to see my match. I feel a lot better this week and I'm looking for a good result here. I need it."
Indeed she does, after reaching the finals of Antwerp, Mirza grabbed the 10th ranked position and became the first ever Indian player to do so. But after her first round loss in Dubai, her ranking has slipped from number 10 to number 12. Sania has recently made the statement that her main goals of the season are to A) win a singles title, B) finish in the top 10 and C) qualify for the Year End Championship tournament.
"I'm a very goal oriented person. When I want to accomplish something and I put my mind towards it, no one can stop me. So Elena, Venus, Nicole and any other woman that wants to try and stand in my way, go ahead and try, I guarentee you won't be standing there for very long."
With Mirza's rise in popularity, she's been recieving a lot of commerical indorsement offers with Nike and Sprite. Rumor has it that Mirza has taken the Sprite deal and her first commerical for the soda company will debut at the Pacific Life Open next week.
"It's all very exciting but I'm not going to let this recent fame effect my game in any way. I'm still going to be kicking ass but just be getting a bigger pay check for doing so."

Brie Whitehead def. (8)Jelena Jankovic 6-3,6-3
I do not like either game plan of these two, especially Jelena's, her plan is a little too safe and weak, while Brie's is just dull. Congrats Brie on a easy straight set victory, dropping 6 games, we haven't had it that lopsided sicne Mauresmo defeated Zvonareva 2 and 2 in the 1r of the Aussie.

Li came back from 2-5 in the second set, even having match points against her. Serving at 6-5 in the final set, Li won the match with a backhand down the line winner. "It's very exciting to have beaten such a great player. I fought my hardest when I was match point down at 3-5 in the second set and I just stayed in the match." Vera Zvonareva Goes Down In 3 sets
Vera Zvonareva of Russia lost 6-3,2-6,7-5 to 4th seed Venus Williams in a 2hr 47 min match. In the first set Venus Williams used her all court game to overpower Zvonareva. However in the 2nd Zvonareva started to take some chances, winning 12 of 14 at the net,she kept Williams pinned behind the baseline. In the third set both players played extreemly well, many long rallys, but it was williams who would prevail winning the third set 7-5.

(1)Elena Dementieva def. Franchesca Schiavone 5-7,7-6(3),7-6(1)
 Franny pushed Elena to the limit, either Elena sucked or Franny was on fire, but this could have been an upset. Franny is getting used to the tour and should get some wins pretty soon, but the number 1 player was too good today. She will face wildcard Jie Zheng or Brie Whitehead in the quarterfinals.

(WC)Jie Zheng vs. Brie Whitehead
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k89/xXxPosterGirlxXx/BrieWhitehead02-1.jpg
Brie Whitehead def. (WC)Jie Zheng 6-2,6-2
 this is tied for the most lopsided match in pro tour!!!! Jie just played bad today against Brie, who basically went all for nothing today and it worked. Plus, she looking hotter than ever in that picture! Congrats Brie. She now faces world number one Elena Dementieva for a spot in the semifinals.

Michaella Krajicek vs. Na Li
http://tennisactueel.nl/picture_library/Michaella%20Krajicek%20blijer.jpg
Michaella Krajicek def. Na Li 7-5,6-4
Two straight sets in a row for Michaella! Na did not play bad at all this week, beating J-Cap in a great three set match, but Michaella is on fire this week, can she continue that fire against 4th-seeded Venus Williams or will she face Georgian Margalita Chaknashvili
Kevin. Oct 5th, 2007, 12:05 AM Second Round

http://images.tsn.ca/images/stories/20040624/venus_54562.jpg
Margalita Chaknashvili def. (4)Venus Williams 4-6,7-6(2),7-5
 x 10000. NEVER EXPECTED THIS, especially from Margalita, I do not like this game plan she has, same one from Jie Zheng and she got crushed, but she grabs her biggest win of her career so far, and is in the QF! Venus  wasted oppurtunities in the second and third sets.

http://images.supersport.co.za/PennettaFlavia040512JumpswithJoyGbg.jpg
Flavia Pennetta def. (3)Maria Kirilenko 6-4,3-6,7-5
Another shocking upset. Flavia could possibly be in her third consecutive semifinal! From complete lack of motivation to probably the most consistent player on tour now! Maria's ranking could start declining very soon if she doesn't get her game together. I think she is just testing some plans out, but needs to stick to one main one. Congrats Flavia :woohoo:. Maria

(6)Tathiana Garbin def. (WC)Martina Hingis 0-6,6-2,6-3
Martina blew away Tathiana in the first set, and I was shocked! But Martina did not have alot to back up on and that is why she lost today. I wished Tathiana could separte points with her old plan, I really enjoyed that plan, but she is into the quarters to face countrywoman Flavia Pennetta for a spot in the semifinals.

One of the best wins ever for Dominika! Nicole played very well until the end, she just gave up, but she had a nice variety. Congrats Dominika! Look at Dominik, this week 7 out of 7 she sent points! Congrats!

young_gunner913 Oct 5th, 2007, 08:28 AM Mirza Contraversy Continues
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/pappo.jpg
After another stunning first round upset, tennis sensation Sania Mirza was elminated from the last Middle East tournament by China's Jie Zheng. The youngster who has the most potential on tour to become a great champion has been plagued by outrage by Muslim religious leaders on where a woman's place is.
Even though Mirza has been the crowd favorite, she still deals with pressures from the goverment and religious leaders whom have threatened her numerous times for her "revealing" tennis uniforms and her overall attitude towards what the traditional Muslim woman is.
"It's really hard to play under all the pressure that I've been dealing with lately. In my match against Jie, it was too much for me. I beat myself out there, she really only had to show up and rally."
Mirza has been under attack since she played in a short skirt in her run to the finals of Antwerp. Once again in Dubai she wore a short skirt due to the extreme heat of the country. Mirza whose become somewhat of a fashion icon on tour along with tennis greats such as the Williams sisters, Maria Kirilenko, and even world number one, Elena Dementieva, sometimes. But with Mirza's new outfits come outrage from traditional Muslim followers who claim her skirts are too short.
"I cannot believe that this young woman has the nerve to disgrace herself, her family, and a whole nation with such revealing clothing! It's provocative and sends the wrong message to young Muslim girls. She is a terrible role model and I demand that she retire from the Pro Tour and return to her family to learn some manners." said Mohammad Na'Haseem, a religious leader for a Mosque in Doha.
Sania was asked about what her feelings where in reguards to Mr. Na'Haseem's comments about her tennis career. She responded in this statement.
"I respect that he has the right to his own opinion, but he needs to learn that I have the right to live my own life. I believe in my traditions and religion but I will be damned if I let a man tell me what I can and cannot do because I am a woman. In reguards to retiring from the Pro Tour, not even in his dreams."
In recent days Mirza has been seen as a role model for women's rights in the Middle East. Her constant struggle with Muslim leaders though has proven to take it's wear on her. Sania who recently just signed a contract with Sprite had to postpone the release of the commercial due to Middle Eastern television stations refusing to play the commercial after a ban from the government.
"It's sad that all these negative things have to arise right now. I wanted to perform well infront of home crowds but the government and religious leaders have been up my ass trying to tell me whats right and how to live my life. I'll live my life the way I want to live it, and not how some man wants me to live it."
On a more positive note, Mirza had this to say about next week's Pacific Life Open which will be held once again at Indian Wells.
"My commercial is making it's world debut, I will hopefully be back to normal with my game and I'm expecting some big results. No more fooling around, in every tournament from now on, I'm in it to win it."

Brie Whitehead def. (1)Elena Dementieva 7-6(4),6-1
Brie grabs the best vicotry of her career and has yet to drop a set en route to the semifinals. She certainly got her revenge after losing a close match to Elena last week. But Bre missed out by a seeding by one spot, so I am not surprised she can pull of these upsets. Elena  you should have sent new points

Serena finally wins her along waited maiden title!!! This had to be the best match along with the Mirza-Dementieva Antwerp match as Match of the Year! This was an amazing final to see being played. Michaella brought the best game she could have brought and had a match point, but in the end, Serena brought it even better as she wins her first title! CONGRATS!

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/sanyalos.jpg
The duo of India's Sania Mirza and France's Mary Pierce has once again proved to be a winning combo when the team had a tough three set win over American Jennifer Capriati and her Russian counterpart, Anna Chakvetadze. Mirza/Pierce won 7-5, 2-6, 10-2.
Mirza always likes to commend Pierce for her fierce play at the net as well as her relentless groundstrokes that seem to chip away at any opponent. The Antwerp champions who are the fourth ranked doubles team in the world are looking for their second career title of the year, but to do so, they must defeat the second ranked doubles team in the world made up of a pair of swash bucking Italians, Flavia Pennetta and Tathianna Garbin.
"I definently think that we have a good chance to beat them. Mary always plays really strong and she has a great attitude which really helps me turn up my game. She's the best partner in the world and I'm so happy that I get to play with her. She teaches me a lot and I really appreciate that she's going through this tough time with me here in the Arab countries."
Recently, Mirza has been under fire from religious leaders of the Muslim world who have been stating that Sania does not know her place as a woman and that she should retire from her tennis career immediately. She's been threatened numerous times but that does not stop India's rising star from achieving her dream which is to become the best tennis player in the world. That’s really really impressive from Alona and Jelena, this is their breakthrough after Tokyo semifinal, they beat the number 1 seed and now the hot Williams sisters. Their backhands are too strong, even stronger than Serena and Venus today, because Sernus made too many errors today. Their service percentage is very high, although not very strong, but very trickly. Congrats Alona and Jelena through to the final, bad luck Serena/Venus.

A super comeback from the Italian duo, although eat a bagel in the first set, but they are able to recover and use their traditional tactic. They serve well and volley well. Sania and Mary just don’t have too many lucks. They didvery well in first, but they may be think Tathiana and Flavia are not very strong, they can recover so well. Anyway, congrats Tathiana and Flavia through to another final after Tokyo. Bad luck Sania and Mary, you had a good week through!

Well done, Tathiana/Flavia!!! Although they have suffered many bagels, but they didn’t give up. They volleys well and they have a good gameplan to face Alona and Jelena’s backhnads, their dropshots made Alona and Jelena shocked, Jelena smiled many times in the match! Jelena and Alona didn’t serve very well, although they have ended the match earlier, but Tathiana/Flavia are more experienced. So congrats Tathiana/Flavia for your first title, bad luck Alona and Jelena in your first final!!
