Julia Cohen Of the US is eager to win her first title. There could not be a better place than here at the Australian Open!All the best junior players in the world are contending for the title. We spoke with Julia earlier today and she answerd some questions for us:

Q:Julia this is the first Grand Slam of the year, who do you think are the favorites?

JC:Well there are the obvious choices like Alexa Glatch & Kristina Antoniychuk, but there are also some dark horses like Jade Curtis. But I also hope I can win.

Q: You Play Paola Calerdon in the first round what do think your chances are?

JC: Actually, I've never heard of her, so I'm gonna have to do some heavy scouting!

Anastasia Pivovarova lost her first round match to 7th seeded Ksenia Pervak in her debut tournament at Optus Nottinghill. Despite this being her debut tournament, Pivovarova showed great courage, fighting down 0-4 in the third set. However, she failed to win the third set, losing it 7-5 and in frustration, threw her racket to the ground.

"I was very upset that I lost but I realize that Ksenia is my friend and also my doubles partner and a very good player. No shame in losing to her." The young Russian stated.

Now at the Australian Open, Pivovarova hopes to breakthrough and go as far as she can. In both singles AND doubles.

"Me and Ksenia are partners and I hope we do really well!"

Accompanying her is her coach Kaeli and her father, who both weren't available for comments.

Magnificent Moore Leads Aussie Charge

Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - 17 year old rising star Jessica Moore has won the match of the round on Day One of the Australian Open Junior Championships. In an encounter lasting almost four hours, West Australia's teen queen won her maiden match on the WTL Circuit and gained revenge on American Coco Vandeweghe (who won a tough match last week in Nottinghill), 6-7, 7-6, 7-6.
'It's awesome,' beamed a thrilled Moore. 'I have dreamt of doing well and winning matches here in front of my home crowds for a long time now, and to do so is very fulfilling. It's great to be out there, fighting as hard as you can and getting the great support for the fans. I think that the crowd support is really what got me over the line today.'
In an extremely tough match, Vandeweghe won the first set in a tiebreak on her fourth set point. In the second set, Moore saved a match point when serving at 5-6 and went on to claim the set in a tiebreak, on her second set point. In doing so, Moore jogged to the sideline whilst Vandeweghe threw and broke her racquet in utter frustration. In the decider, the pair could only be split by yet another tiebreak, and after saving another two match points, Moore could finally sink to her knees in relief after claiming victory.
In the second round, Moore faces 14-year old giant killer, Blanka Szavay, who steamrolled the World No.1 and top seed in the first round. Unfortunately, however, Moore was the only Aussie girl to advance through to the second round today with Queensland's Shayna McDowell suffering a 6-0, 0-6, 7-5 loss to Israel's Julia Glushko.

This is the day when the danish youngster Caroline Wozniacki won her first match (in two sets).

After her not so good (very bad) debut in Australia last week she had time to focus to the next tournament the Australian Open Junior Championships.

Caroline used the time to practise and to analyse her potencial opponents playstyle.

On friday she had a day off and she used this occasion to visit Melbourne's Zoo where she met with the Koalas.

After the long preparation Caroline really wanted to have at least one victory in the first GS of the year and yes she has now at least 1 :P .

And now about the match itself.

Caroline endurance isn't the best right now so if it would be a three set match she couldn't has good chance to win the match so she needed to end this match in two sets.

In the first set Caroline could prevent Brengle to break her service and with a late break Caroline succeeded in the first set with 6-4.

The second set was very tough. Caroline lost her service twice. First after 1*-1, second after 5*-5 but with a rebreak Caroline could come back to the match and after 6-6 came the tie-break with many mini-breaks. Caroline now had the mental power and luck and won the match with a ball which bound on the net.

Julia Cohen of the US ranked 10 lost her first round match today 06,60,57. We caught up with Julia after this heartbreaking loss.



Q:Julia,how do you think you played today

JC:Well,in the first set I played terrible errors all over the place, but in the second I played quite well, and in the third we both played well,but it the end she played the big points better.

Q: Julia if you had to name one thing you think you have to improve what wouuld that be?

JC:My serve, I looked at the stats after the match and my first serve percentage was 17% in the first set,51% in the second and,31% in the third I also had 9 doubles

Q: Speaking of doubles what do you think your chances are ?

JC: Well, I think we have a shot, this is the first doubles tournement of the year, we'll have to improve some things, namely my serve, and we'll do well I think.

Q:Only one seeded player lost in the first round,Kristina Antoniychuk,
who you and just about everyone else named as one of the favorites to win the title, what do you think about her loss?

JC:Well first thing I have to say is congrats Blanka(Szavay) on your first win and over the number 1 player in straight sets too! Next thing is Kristina can't lose faith in her game she played really well last week, she just faced a player who was on fire today! And the draw is really opening up for Alexa

MELBOURNE,AUSTRALIA-AP- World number 2 Alexa Glatch won the first tournament of the year and made the quarterfinals of the Optus event, now ranked number 2 instead of number 1 is hard for her.

"I love being number one, I would love to go pro, unfortunately I can;t becuase my coach runs the Professional Tour, and it would be unfair to other players."

"Winning the first event was amazing and shocking I didn't expect to win a match at all."

Today she beat Timea Babos of Hungart 6-1,1-6,7-6(4) to make the second round of the Junior Australian Open, and with teh upset of number 1 Kristina Antoniychuk in the first round by Blanka Szavay 6-2,6-3, Alexa is the clear favorite.

"I do not want to put pressure on myself, I want to have fun out here, and I am ready to win the title."

She will also be playing the doubles event with rising Australian Jessica Moore.

"I didn't really want to sign up, but I did for more play, so I signed up and Jessie took the spot immediately, and maybe I will claim the double," she laughs.

The young Frenchwoman showed some of the fighting power that seen her to the final of the Grade 1 Optus International tournament last week. “I’m loving my tennis at the moment. I played well today and I’m glad I won that second set, it was very tough. In the third I think she just lost her confidence a bit, but she is a good player and she showed some signs of that through the match.”

Chala is also playing doubls for the first time here with French partner, Kristina Mladenovic. “It’s good to get the chance to play doubles. I have never really played doubles before especially at this level. Kristina is a good young player and a very good friend. Since she is also French we spend a lot of time together at tournaments.”

After a tough three set victory in the opening round, Moore has returned to the courts of Melbourne Park with a 7-6(2), 0-6, 6-0 win over 14 year old Hungarian, Blanka Szavay. It was a momentous win for the young West Australian as Szavay had earlier dispatched top seed Kristina Antoniychuk with ease.

JC: Well to me there was only one suprise: Jessica Moore beating Blanka Szavay,a very scratchy match from both players,butt all credit to Jessica for keeping her cool after the second set and bageling Blanka in the third,but Jessica had on thing Blanka didnt: The crowd. They were so loud cheering for Jessica, as they should be, but I think they went a litle overboard.

Q:Well, Julia have you been practicing for doubles?

JC:Yes,I have.I'm serving much better,working on my volleys,doing some fitness work,and Camila(Giorgi) and I are working on our teamwork, and strategy.

Melbourne, AUSTRALIA-- Cindy Chala continued her great run Down Under when she faced Nastassja Burnett in her second round singles match at the Australian Open. It was a tight match between the two youngsters, but eventually the number six seed prevailed in two sets. In the first set both players faced break points and it was actually the Italian who broke first, only to be broken back to love. This didn’t effect her as she battled away to take it to a tiebreak. Chala showed her experience during the tiebreak taking it 7-2. The second set, was much the same as the first, both players hitting numerous winners down the lines but this time there was only one break of serve which eventually gave the match to the young Frenchwoman. “It was a good match. I’m loving it here, it’s been great. Everything about it, and it’s even better to keep on winning. I’m glad I could win in two sets, I want to save some of my energy for later on in the tournament.”

Up next for Chala is number four seed Yuliana Fedak. “She is ranked higher, and is I suppose expected to win, but I’m playing very well lately and I think I can get through this. Quarter final at a Grand Slam is great, and a semi final would be even better.”

Q:Once again with Julia Cohen,Well lets get right to it, there was a big upset today, could you tell us a bit more about it Julia?

JC:Wow! Was that a great match or what? The final score was 76(6),67(5),76(5). GREAT match, both girls played very well! Jade was hitting the ball really well,but so was Alexa. I talked to Alexa after the match and she was really upset, mostly because this is two weeks in a row she has lost to Jade. Jade, however was VERY happy, so happy she bought everyone a ice cream! I belive Jade will win this title!

Q:What kind of ice cream did you get?

JC:Vanilla:)With sprinkles:)Double scoop for luck in doubles.

JC:Well, Grams beating Cindy Chala was a suprise to me,Nikola beating Jessica was not a suprise, but I was sure it would go three sets but it didnt.

Q:The doubles draw is out, what do you think of you teams draw?

JC:Well it's a round robin so if we play one crappy match it's not over. Camila and I are in group 2, the other teams in our group are Glatch/Vandweghe,and Chala/Mladenovic. The only girl I've played against in singles is Cindy(Chala) and she beat me,but I know her strengths now, and revenge is sweet.

Wow, maybe from next week we can start bloggers like in WTT :p

Szávay Blanak a dot was able to win the first match of his career against the world's leading one, but against his adversary not liked already in the next turning unfortunately. He is in a competition yet mutual in a couple. I hope for it we will be acting there with my even partner something beautiful one.
I cut with big self-confidence for him for the gymnastics because I overcame the world's leading one. I am in development, in the next year already gymnastics onto a victory favourite may be. It this year already not probable, because the game is not going very much, but this a level is equal to measuring one.
