Elke's Blog

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/592/212318022004elke2.jpg

Hello everyone,

Sorry that I'm arriving so late to do this blog, but it's something that my older sister Kim has enjoyed doing so well, and Belgium would love to have a permanent team blog someday. I am currently practicing for Indian Wells with my good friend Caroline Maes. We have so much fun together that practice can't even really be hard. Of course, I would also like to announce the current situation with our dear friend, Justine Henin.

Currently, Justine is in the hospital right now. She's gotten in a terrible accident on the I-10 freeway on her way here to Indian Wells, and she's in critical condition. She is in my heart and in my prayers, as well as in the minds of all tennis lovers. Justine got to Belgium's first career final against Marta Domachowska in Portoroz, Slovenia and without her our team is a little deflated. Kim and I were devastated when we heard the news, and we even cried. We know that Carlos Rodriguez, one of the federation's coaches, is closer to her than all of us, and he's been in seclusion. So, I hope that she can recover. They said that she is getting blood transfusions and they're keeping a close eye on her. She severed a major artery in the accident, but it hasn't reached fatal stage yet. If they can perform surgery on her, then she'll be okay. Otherwise, it could be the end of our dearest player.

So, I implore all of you to keep her in your thoughts and prayers. We want everyone to band together to help in this difficult time.

A look forward - Indian Wells Qualification Preview

Only two of the seven players will get Qualification to the Indian Wells Main Draw and this is the highest standard Qualification draw to date.

The field is headed by Canadian Marie Eve Pellitier who won a title a few tournaments ago albeit on grass. Last week she pushed Yan Zi to three sets and is a force on any surface. She gets a first round bye.
.
.
.
Maries first opponent will be either Thailands Tamerine Tamasugarn or Georgias Ekaterine Gorgordze. This is Thailands first tournament and only Gerogias second but they have reached a final. It will be close as both know they have a real chance. Expect a three setter.
.
.
.
The next match features two dark horses of the tour, Romania and Israel. Last week in Doha they upset the number 3 and 4 seeds respectivly but their consistency can let them down as neither have won a second round match at at touranement. But this could be their chance. Whoever holds their form better will sneak the win.
.
.
.
The last qualifying match in the first round sees two big talents square off. Russia will always have bags of talent but unlike Japan I dont think they are realising it yet. Japan played a very good and confident debut to reach a semi final where we havnt seen that kind of play from Russia yet. But you would be a fool to ever write them off.

My Predictions - 1st Round
[1] Pellitier def. Bye
Tamasugarn def. Gorgordoze
Olaru def. Peer
Sugiyama def. [2] Petrova

My Predictions - Final Round
[1] Pellitier def. Tamasugarn
Sugiyama def. Olaru

My Predictions - Qualifiers

JPN Ai Suigyama

Elke's Blog

It's me again! I've been up all night with Justine, and her condition hasn't improved. In fact, it may have gotten worse. They attempted to do surgery to connect her slightly severed artery, but they found an infection in the area, and they're trying to remove it before it gets too close to her heart and potentially kills her. It's been a stressful time, and the tennis isn't really what's important right now. It's about the fate of my teammate, and I want to do all that I can to prevent her from dying.

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/592/P1010127a.JPG

My tennis has been okay. I went out to practice and saw Ai Sugiyama training very hard! She's going to be such a great player, top eight definitely. She's got all the talent and she's agressive. She will do whatever it takes to get her way. A lot of people see me and Kim as the next new thing in tennis, and I want to show them that they're right as well. Uzbekistan are very tough on hard courts, the best in my opinion, and it's a shame that I had to open against them. The team is very dedicated and had I been in the opposite half, it could be a final.

But then again, winning isn't everything

:wavey: See you all on court very soon, and keep Justine in your heart.

Elke

Indian Wells Preview - Round of 16

After the Australian Open Indian Wells is the biggest tournament played this year in the WTT so far. This Tier I could eventually see a new world number and some big ranking changes so this could be the best tournament of the year so far. So who will surprise, prevail and win?

The Number 1 Seeds and World number 2 are Uzbekistan and in the form of Iroda Tulyaganova they have a great shot to become the best in the world. Belgiums Elek Clijsters is her first round competitor. She is having trouble mentally with Justines accident but she will have to focus here. I expect Iroda to take now mercy though
.
.
.
Doha finalists Britain will have a very tough time if they are to that again. Elena Baltacha faces the number six seed - Zuzana Ondarksova from the Czech Republic. Zuzana is class and has defeated top 3 players before but Elena is tough. It will be very close.
.
.
.
Qualifier Marie Eve Pellitier will be confident after her match here but she will have to raise her game if she will beat Flavia Penetta. Whether she will is questionable but if she dosnt be sure to see the Italians picking up the pieces.
.
.
.
Another team with a small chance of the World Number 1 spot are third seed France. They will hope to bounce back from a disspointing last few tournaments. Here they face Ukraine, who have had an awful few weeks losing first round everytime. But one of their best, Alona Bondarenko may be able to change that.
.
.
.
The fourth seeds are the Clay godesses Spain who really have to prove they are now one surface wonder here. A bad performance could see them slip down the rankings and Anabel Medina Garigues will be hoping that dosnt happpen. She faces USA and Bethanie Mattek. If the USA turn up, which is the biggest question, Bethanie could easily cause an upset.
.
.
.
The most exciting first round match sees Shahar Peer the qualifier from Israel versus the Doha and Dubai champions Netherlands. Despite the better record Netherlands could easily lose of they drop their guard but I dont think they will. One of the main favourties for this title should prevail.
.
.
.
Australia are the number five seeds here and Alicia Molik will hope she can help her country regroup after a first round loss in Doha. However Radwanska is a tough cookie and will fight all the way and the Australians could do well not to repeat their Doha performance.
.
.
.
Chinas Na Li is the hope for the number 2 seeds here and she has a chance, if she performs at her best, that she could become the number 1 after this tournament. Hoping to ruin that dream is Peurto Rico but I think the Dark Horses will be tactically outplayed by one of the best teams on tour.

Predictions - 1st Round

Elke's Blog

Today is a sad day for Belgian tennis.

We lost our greatest player. Justine Henin died of several complications from her tragic accident in California, and we are left lost right now. We don't have a clear leader of the team like Justine was. She'll be watching over us from above.

My sister Kim and Justine were very close, and the news of her death has completely devastated her. I don't know if Belgium can recover from the loss. We've invited Yanina Wickmayer to play with us in place of Justine, and Kim is now our go to girl, but it still won't be the same. Sorry that there's no picture, but I haven't played tennis since my loss. I was informed after the first set that Justine was likely not to make it, and I tried my best to win the match for her, but Iroda was too tough.

I hope that I will talk to you soon. Please, remember her.

RIP Justine Henin

Indian Wells Preview - Quarterfinals

Uzbekistan are one match away from becoming the World Number 1. Iroda Tulyaganova will try desperatly to win this match but Elena Baltacha stands in the way. Both played well in their first round matches but I think Iroda will wait no longer for the number 1 spot. She could be closing in...
.
.
.
Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko will be hoping to continue her good form that saw her upset the number 3 seed over to Qualifier Pelletier. But she will find this tough, Marie is confident and in my books starts as the slight favourtie.
.
.
.
Tamerine Tamasugarn is on Cloud Nine at the moment and she will have to carry her confidence and form over if she stands any chance on stopping the Dutch extended their winning streak to 10 matches. But we have seen stranger things happen on the tour...
.
.
.
Chinas Na Li looks determind to take the number 1 spot this week and she knows if Iroda falters at this hurdle a tournament win could be enough. But she has to get past this match to get there and that will be difficult in itself. Alicia will push her, it will be very close...

Second seed Na Li of China advances to yet another semifinal after eliminating a tough opponent, who is none other than Australia's Alicia Molik in two sets of tiebreaks 7-6(1),7-6(0) in the quarterfinals of the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells.

"Well,it's a very very tough match as expected but I kinda have a plan that managed to defeat her.I was still struggling to keep my form since the previous match against Natalia but she was also having trouble with her serve which is usually her strength. She struggled a lot to hold her service game especially in the tiebreaks.I just played my game and never gave her the chance to try and be in front of me."said the Chinses after the match against the fifth seed.

"Michaella is next.I heard she has helped her country to get a 10 match winning streak. That's great. But it's not a surprise since hardcourts is her favourite surface.I think I was the last one to beat her before that when I won Bangkok. But she's definitely a very very hard opponent to play with.Hopefully I'm able to end her streak and possibly win my second title."commented Li about her semifinal opponent-eighth seed Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands.

When asked about her chances to be on top of the rankings after first seed Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan was upset in her quarterfinal match against Elena Baltacha of the Great Britain, she replied:"Well,we'll see what happens on Saturday.I don't want to comment too much about that so that I won't put too much pressure of myself on that.It will be great if I'm able to do so.But at the moment,I'll take one match at a time because I know Michaella is a tough opponent to beat."

Indian Wells Predictions - Semi Finals

Were down to the final four of this Tier I Tournament with a Qualifier, a Doha Finalist, Two time Hardcourt Tournament Winner and a Potential World Number 1 all going for the two places in the final. Expect the best quality matches of the tournament so far as we find out who will make this big tournament final.

Great Britain are on a roll at the moment. After a Final in Doha they are in the semi final here again and hoping to emulate that again here. Their opponent for Elena Baltacha to play are Qualifiers Marie Eve Pelletier who has had a great, yet unexpected run here to this Tier I semi. Expect the best tennis theyve played yet this tournament as both attempt to boost their rankings by booking a place in the final.
.
.
.
China have a great chance of the world number 1 if they win here and they deserve it too. Tournament after Tournament they have produced great results and it all comes down to this match now. They dont have an easy task to beat the number 8 seeds Netherlands who are on a healthy Ten Match winning streak but I dont see them losing a chance like this.

Predictions
Balatcha def. [Q] Pelletier
[2] Li def. [8] Krajicek

China Stops The Netherlands,
Advances To The Final

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3248/fullj_getty-73553534hh004_pacific_life_5_09_33_pm.jpg

Indian Wells,USA-Second seed Na Li,representing China, has ended Dutchwoman Michaella Krajicek's 10 match winning streak in the semifinals of the Pacific Life Open by defeating the fifth seed 7-6(1),6-4.

It was a very nail-biting match. Both players started very strong in the start of the match by holding their own serve. They also hit many beautiful shots across the courts and the spectators of the stadium really enjoyed the match. They cheered and applauded the players point by point when the player had won the point with a winner. The first set ended up in a tiebreak where Li won it rather comfortably.Krajicek was pretty much frustrated after losing the tiebreak.

In the second set,Li and Krajicek keeped up their good form from the previous set.Li failed to hold her service game in the seventh game but luckily she broke back her opponent's service game to level the set at 4 all. After Li held her service game to lead the set at 5-4,it was down to Krajicek to serve to stay in the match.Krajicek hit an ace first before Li win the next point with a backhand crosscourt winner. The Chinese won another point by making a return winner down the line. The Dutch surprsingly double-faulted and gave China their first match point. She hit an ace in the next point to save one but failed to save the other one as Li hit another forehand winner. The match ended after 2 hours and 18 minutes.

"Oh my.That was really the best match I've played so far in this season.I know she was going to be very tought to beat but I tried to stay with her along the match. Then when we reached the tiebreak,I knew I had to be aggressive and let her run to all the balls.I managed to do that eventually. Then I panicked a little when I lost my serve but I regrouped immediately in the next game and focused on every point."said the second seeded Chinese in the post match press conference.

When they are informed that China has claimed the #1 ranking with that victory,Na was very happy but not surprised."Well,it's really great when you get to this stage by winning tougher opponents.I definitely feel good with that because we have set the target to be #1 as I mentioned in the interview earlier before the event starts. We have come so far just to reach the #1 rank. And we really deserve it.Hopefully we are able to attain the ranking."replied Li about the #1 spot they gain for the first time.

China will face Great Britain's Elena Baltacha after she eliminated Canadian qualifier Marie Eve Pelletier 6-0,6-4 in another semifinal."She's also another opponent similar to Michaella but I'm confident to do it again. It'll be a dream come true for China if we can win the title here in Indian Wells.Hope I'll be prepared for it."

China-Mission Completed

http://i.eurosport.fr/2006/05/06/275573-1051105-317-238.jpg

It was a great finish for the Pacific Life Open where the newly crowned #1 country of WTT-China won their second title after Na Li dismissed her British opponent Elena Baltacha 0-6,7-5,6-1 in the final at the Tier I hardcourt tournament.

"Wow!I'm really ecstatic right now.I knew I have the chance to win this but the outcome of the match is a little surprising for me.She(Baltacha) was playing superb tennis in the first set where I barely put a ball on court. Then I started to gain my momentum and play much better in the second set where I eventually avoided her to play the tiebreak. She somehow lost her steam that carries her to two finals so far, maybe she has been very tired. But in the end,I'm glad I'm playing well."

"Anyway,a win is a win. It's China's second title where I have contributed both titles.I have worked so hard to come this way.I think we really really deserves this, plus the #1 rank.I have nothing much to complain about right now.I just wish we can be the dominant force in the tour soon. Now at the moment,I'd like to dedicate this title to all our team members and the 13 billion people in China. Thanks a lot for the support that I'm able to stand her and represent China to play."

"Our next plan is to play another event, which is still undecided. Most probably it'll be another hardcourt event in Miami.Although we won and we somehow felt a little tired after all these,we still decide to play another event next week but of course,I won't be playing then. It'll definitely be one of the other three members(Peng,Yan,Jie). We need to let every player get exposed to the competition in the events as frequent as possible. So hopefully we'll do well again then."
