Just like Bartoli on the clay and Mauresmo on the grass, Jelena has been the form player on hard in the run-up to this US Open, since losing early in Cincinnati, she has blazed through the field to pick up two titles, she could get tad complacent though, that's my only concern, the other favourite is Krajicek, Misa performs very well on the big stage, and reached the semis of both RG and Wimbledon, and on her best surface she's got a great chance to at least match that result here, the only problem is quite a few other players have hard as their best surface too.
The Contenders

With so many hard-courters and with Jankovic dominating the tune-ups, it was hard to pick some other contenders, I went with Maria as she has the game to beat anyone, unfortunately she's a headcase  but she could put a run together here, Myskina and Rezai are recent finalists, and Nastya in particular has a wily strategy, and but can sometimes be overpowered, whilst Aravane can take anyone apart but is way too streaky.

LDF Sep 25th, 2007, 06:44 PM Davenport announces retirement with immediate effect
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42058000/jpg/_42058100_davenport216.jpg
New York, USA -- After suffering a horrendous injury in Canada, Lindsay Davenport appeared on the verge of quitting. She missed New Haven to regroup mentally and physically, and came to the US Open with hopes for one or two wins to regain her confidence. But the final nail in the coffin has been hit.
Davenport crashed out of the last Slam of the season with a straight sets loss to newcomer Daniela Hantuchova. Lindsay appeared lethargic early on, spraying many routine shots, and despite a spirited effort in the second she couldn't muster enough energy to pull herself into a decider.
The American cut a distraught figure as she walked into the interview room, where instead of answering questions she simply read out the following statement:
'Unfortunately I am announcing my retirement from the Ace Tennis Circuit. I've been waiting for a good result to turn my season around, but instead it's simply been loss after loss. I am mostly at fault; I have not been committed enough to experimenting with my game and adapting to different players. I just don't have the heart to continue like this though. I'd like to thank the director for the work he has put in to create such a great tour.'

LDF Sep 25th, 2007, 06:55 PM Serena Williams arrives on the Ace Tennis Circuit
http://access.nscpcdn.com/gallery/i/s/serena/lg1.jpg
New York, USA -- With Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams both crashing out on the opening day of play in Flushing Meadows, and the former announcing her sudden retirement, the state of US tennis is not looking too rosy. However, there is a bright side to today's events, and that is the news that Serena Williams will join the tour, beginning at the first indoors event.
'I'm really excited to get underway,' said Serena in a short press conference. 'I've been practicing every now and then for the last few months, but I wasn't able to find a coach who'd take me on. When Lindsay retired her coach approached me and of course I accepted his offer straight away.'

Michaella Krajicek(5) def. Tamira Paszek 6-2,2-6,6-4
Moderator: Good job on your first match here in the US Open.Michaella: Yeah. Thanks a lot.
Moderator: So what do you think about your match against Tamira?Michaella: Well,I started off pretty well while she seemed a little shaky.I managed to win the first rather easily. But she stepped up her game and I just couldn't follow her pace in the second set and I somehow not being able to focus as well.Luckily I regrouped in the deciding set and I won the only break point of the set.So yeah.I'm pretty glad since she's playing pretty well on hardcourts at times.
Moderator: What do you feel about your own game?Do you think it'll bring you far in the tournament?
Michaella: Frankly,I don't think I'll be any good with those game plans.I actually feel insecure with those compared to when I was playing on clay and grass. So I really am not very confident with it at the moment.I may win rather easily against few of them and I may lose terribly against the others. So I just hope luck will be by my side but I don't think I'll win anyway.
Moderator: Ok.So you're going to face Maria Kirilenko in the next round.Any thought about it?
Michaella: I know she's also another player who plays well on hardcourts and is able to make some surprising results.I did watch her playing a little after my match and she won Jennifer(Capriati),who is also good on this surface, pretty comfortably. So I'm pretty aware of it and hopefully I'm able to make it through to the quarters.
Moderator: Have you set your target to win the title this week?Michaella: Well, anyone sure wants to win a grand slam. But I don't think it's my time to do it.Like I said just now,I don't feel comfortable with my strategy, plus I've not been playing like the way I would want for the last 2 weeks, albeit winning my very first title in Cincinnati. So for now,I just hope to reach the quarters and hopefully I'll be able to play for the Year End Championship(YEC).
Moderator: There are some upsets today. What do you think about it?
Michaella: Yeah.I also found out just a while ago.I was pretty shocked when Amelie(Mauresmo) and Venus(Williams) lost as they're the seeded players although not playing on their favourite surface.I also heard some other players who are good on this surface were beaten by some weak players on hardcourts.I was also surprised Nathalie(Dechy) would win one match but her opponent wasn't that good on this surface either. So for me,it's a good thing actually when these thing happens. At least those who are more likely to beat me are gone. But I'm still aware of others since upsets can happen anytime. And my main enemy now is Maria(Kirilenko). So yeah.I just want to take my match one by one.
Moderator: Who do you think will win USO title?
Michaella: It's actually tough to say this.Anyone can win in any events. But so far,no doubt Jelena(Jankovic) is the hot favourite right now, winning 2 straight titles before coming here.Nathalie is also another pick to win the title but I don't think she'll do it.Or maybe me(laughs).
Moderator: Ok.Thanks for interview and good luck in the upcoming rounds.
Michaella: Thanks a lot.
Ultimatum Sep 25th, 2007, 08:43 PM Interview with Anastasia Myskina
defeated Pennetta 57 63 76 (4)
http://www.itftennis.com/shared/medialibrary/image/gallery/IO_4509_gallery.JPG
Hello!
AM: Hi.
So, you had a tough match today...what can you tell me about it?
AM: There's nothing to say.I was just being my usual crappy self and I barely made it.Flavia played a great, solid match, but I made like 67 errors in the first set. That's if I don't count my 8 double faults in there.I couldn't focus, I couldn't think at all.And especially if you're playing a player like Flavia who hits 200 balls into the court, you need a clear thinking.
So you didn't enjoy it?
AM: No, I hated it.Flavia was a biatch, and I shouldn't say nothing about the chair umpire.I don't know if she was sober on the court. She saw things like 10 minutes later.Once she even overruled a call after the next point we played. That was awful.I was just like: "You biatch!"
Your serve?
AM: Didn't work at all.It was terrible.Even Elena is serving better right now.I wonder if I got the double faults from her, as we talk pretty much.
Your groundstrokes worked well though...
AM: Well, if I am an optimist this time. They worked Ok.Forehand was working, except when I hit the ball outside the stadium on the main court.I don't think the players were thrilled.I was like: "I can do it better and get the ball on my court, not the other court", and I slowly started to play better.Backhand was OK.
So, what are your plans today?
AM: I have a few appoitments with the press today, and probably I will have a training session with a player that's still in NYC, probably with a fellow Russian. One of the Marias or Anna.I will grap a quick coffee or juice with my coach and Elena then, and the I'll go to bed at about 11 pm.I will certainly be preparing mentally against Jankovic. She can bring you down with her attitude, but I can bring people down with my attitude too though.I hope I can win tomorrow :)
Thanks, and good luck!
AM: Thanks, no problem.
The Daviator Sep 25th, 2007, 09:20 PM Serena Williams arrives on the Ace Tennis Circuit
http://access.nscpcdn.com/gallery/i/s/serena/lg1.jpg

Australia's Alicia Molik has advanced throught to the second round of the US Open in New York with a tough three set win over Elena Dementieva. The 6-3 3-6 6-4 victory allows Molik to challenege the world number two, Bremond.
"You know, I have beaten Severine once before. She's a great player and yeah, it will be so tough out there tomorrow."
After a disappointing grass court season, Molik is looking to make a splash at the final grand slam of the year before heading to Europe for the hard court season.
"I didn't play to my potential on grass... I really should have won a tournament and been right up there for Wimbledon... I just played like crap the whole season. So I will hopefully kind of make amends for the grass by leaving an impact here."

BWLH Sep 27th, 2007, 03:24 AM Krajicek Edges Kirilenko into Quarterfinal
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3171/31531475-e310-4779-8ac2-921fadb730b4.jpg
ATC #5 Michaella Krajicek found herself in the quarterfinal of the US Open after battling past Russian Maria Kirilenko 7-5,7-6(6).
Krajicek expected another tough match against the Russian and her opponent didn't disappoint her and herself. Both started off very well and didn't make too many unforced errors.Krajicek made her strike first where she won the only break point of the match in the last game of the first set.Kirilenko was a little frustrated with it but that didn't make her play worse.Instead she played more agressive. Both players held all their service game successfully and the set went to a tiebreak. Both players were still even in tiebreak. But it was Krajicek who had her luck as she won the match with a forehand shot that tipped just over the net and bounced on the other side of the court.
"All in all,it was a high quality match. Both of us really fought everything on the court. She stepped up her game in the second set and I tried to hang on as much as possible and not let her took any free points. My serve helped me a lot today.I only lost like six points on my serve. So I'm pretty satisfied with my performance today."
"I am already happy with a quarterfinal appearance here in Flushing Meadows. At least I had lived up my expetations here with me seeded fifth.I played pretty good in grand slam so far and I'm glad with it.It's not easy to always play well on big ocassions definitely.I'll just enjoy my time here in the US.This is my first visit,so I'm looking forward to do some shopping after the tournament to relax myself and travel this city."
"Tammy is my next opponent. She's playing pretty well so far I believe, although not as good as when on grass courts but she definitely tries hard to maintain her form.I think I beat her on my way to win my first title but I still has a losing record against her(1-2).I don't think I'll win but I'll just try my best and give her a hard time.I know she is eager to win her second grand slam here in the US.It means very much to her.So all the best,Tammy."
The Dutchwoman, however, failed to win her doubles match with partner Shahar Peer in the quarterfinal. They lost the match 4-6,6-3,6-4 against the in-form Jelena Jankovic/Flavia Pennetta."I was pretty disappointed with it because with that,we'll lost our #1 rankings but what could I say, they were just better.I hope they'll win the title."

BWLH Sep 27th, 2007, 07:31 PM Krajicek Reaches Third Straight Grand Slam Semis
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3171/21237456748kjrajicek.jpg
Another typical hard fought three setter for the 5th seed,Michaella Krajicek against the Wimbledon champion,Tamarine Tanasugarn. But this time the Ducthwoman managed to even their H2H record to 2-2 after defeating the American born Thai 6-4,6-7(6),7-5 in the quarterfinal of the last grand slam event of the season.
Tanasugarn served to start off the match and she was broken in her second service game by Krajicek with a drop shot on her third break point. The #3 ranked Tanasugarn immediately claimed the next game and broke Krajicek's strong serve to lead the first set 4-2.However,Krajicek won the next four games to clinch the first set 6-4 after breaking the Thai's service game twice.
Tanasugarn was seen pretty frustrated with the first set but managed to win two games in a row in the second set.But from then on,both players traded their serve, not until in the tenth game where Krajicek successfully held her service game. The set was decided with a tiebreak and both players were very even until the seventh game where Krajicek hit a forehand volley on the Thai's service game and held one match point. But the gutsy Thai fought back and eventually won the tiebreak with an ace.
In the decisive set, both players were pretty nervous in the beginning where they piled up a total of seven unforced errors in just two games but the Roland Garros-Wimbledon semifinalists was able to stamp an early lead by winning the break point in the second game. Both players became steadier from then on where there was not even one break point. The Dutch teenager got her chances by having one break point and also her second match point on the tenth game. However,Tanasugarn showed why she is the #3 in ATC by saving the point from behind the baseline when Krajicek was attacking her with some forehand shots.Although Tanasugarn held that service game, she couldn't do it again in the eleventh game where she was down 15-40 with Krajicek holding another 2 match points. The match ended after almost 3 hours on court when Tanasugarn double faulted.
"I couldn't imagine I'd be able to make it to the semis of a grand slam again after such average performance on hardcourt before heading here.I was expecting Tammy to win as I wasn't feeling my best here yet.I just tried to enjoy my time out there and who knows I'll be in this stage now.I'm indeed really really thrilled for reaching another semis."
"Another high quality match I assume as we're playing our best.Although there were some lapses in certain times but still it was a great play by Tammy too.I just stepped up my game a little especially in the decisive set.It was a nerve-wrecking condition where I couldn't close out the match. But eventually she kinda lost her nerves in the last minute and handled me the win.But she is never in doubt one of the best players in the circuit.I was just lucky to win her to be frank."
"Myskina next.Well, she beat me pretty convincingly just last week in New Haven. So I don't expect to win her again though as I didn't feel I'm in my best condition and not as confidence as usual. She just overcame 8 match points against Marion(Bartoli). So she's definitely a fighter when on court. She tries to fight every point. So my plan is to make the points shorter.Lets see it will work against her this time.Hopefully I won't lose in the semis again as I'm really fed up with it(laugh). But if she really wins,I hope she'll win the final."
Another semifinal showdown will be between ATC #2 Severine Bremond and #10 ranked French Open finalist Ashley Harkleroad.

tennisbuddy12 Sep 28th, 2007, 09:34 PM Harkleroad storms the Big Apple
http://www.tennisserver.com/lines/images/lines_05_08_09/Harkleroad.jpg
Ashley Harkleroad shocked the world by winning the US Open by coming back to defeat fellow unseeded player Anastasia Myskina of Russia 3-6,6-4,6-4. "I'm in utter shock right now. I mean I did reach the final in Paris at the French but Im a Grand Slam champion. It really hasnt sunk in but this is the proudest moment of my life," a tearful Harkleroad said. She dedicated the win to her coach, Joey and boyfriend Mardy Fish. "Both of them have been there for me since the beginning and I give them the upmost dedication. Harkleroad started off the tournament with an upset over 6th seed foe Amelie Mauresmo, then defeated unseeded players Lourded Dominguez-Lino and Mashona Washington to reach the semi-finals. In the SF, she played Severine Bremond, the 2nd seed who defeated Harkleroad in the Auckland final in Week 1. Harkleroad won in 3 and faced Myskina. "This week has been phenomenal. My ranking will shoot up. This is my first title and its a Slam. YES!!!!!!"
