Welcome to the 2nd WMFT Grand Slam- The French Open! After a very interesting week #9, all the players come here, ready to win! Will Marcos Baghdatis continue his dominance on the men's side, or will our new #2 Nathan Healey return to the top? Or, will a new player emerge from the ranks? On the women's side, there is really no clear cut favorite (more like 3 or 4) after a very surprising clay season! Welcome to our newcomers: Kristina & Johanna, Guillermo & Joachim. Good luck to everyone this week!

Women's Preview

The Favorites:

Sacha JONES [3]
Why she's a favorite: Sacha has been in 3 WMFT finals, 2 on clay. After a very unpredictable clay season, Sacha seems to be the most consistent player on tour. Perhaps not ready to win a title, she will definitely go deep here and comes in favored to win the title!
Clay results: 1 win, 1 final, 1 semifinal, 1 first round
Her draw: A tough 2nd round match against either Harkleroad or Paszek, but in general she's got the best quarter out of any seed. Her seed in her quarter is Sugiyama, and she can be very inconsistent. She shouldn't get too far ahead of herself, but if she can get through the Paszek/Harkleroad winner it should be a relatively easy road to the semis, where she could potentially play the top seed.

Sybille BAMMER [2]
Why she's a favorite: After a tough start to the clay season, she took home the title in Strasbourg last week. She can be very inconsistent, but if she plays anywhere near where she did last week she's could definitely win here.
Clay results: 1 win, 1 quarterfinal, 2 first rounds
Her draw: As the second seed, Sybille probably has the 2nd easiest draw here. The seed in her section is Davenport, who can be dangerous, but she just hasn't produced as of late. Her 2nd round might be tough against Pennetta (who beat her once on clay), but if she can get through that she should get to the semis where she'll potentially play Kirilenko or Ivanovic

Maria Kirilenko [4]
Why she's a favorite: With such a strange clay court season, it's tough to pick clear-cut favorites. But if you're going to pick a 3rd, it would definitely have to be Kirilenko. After skipping the first clay tournament then bowing out in round 1 of week #7, Kirilenko made a good comeback and took home one of the 4 clay tournaments. Last week she lost a tough quarterfinal, but if Maria can play her game she's definitely got the skills to take the title!
Clay results: 1 win, 1 quarterfinal, 1 1st round
Her draw: Maria probably has the toughest draw of the favorites (but only the 2nd toughest overall). She'll take on the winner of Cibulkova/Serena Williams in the second round, both of whom can put up a fight. The toughest thing about her draw: In the quarters she'll play either the person who beat her last week (Ivanovic) or an always dangerous player: Likhovtseva.

Other Contenders
Who?: Amelie Mauresmo [1], Ana Ivanovic [5], Nicole Vaidisova [8]
Why their favorites: Amelie is the #1 player in the world and Australian Open champion, Ivanovic made the final last week and one other quarterfinal, and Vaidisova made the quarters last week as well as the Tier I semi. They all have the potential to beat top players and win several matches in a row. On top of all that, the clay season was crazy! Only in the last tournament did the best players (well, top seeds) seem to come into form. This French Open could get very interesting, and anyone could take home the title- even a non-favorite!

The Dark Horses:

Elena BALTACHA
Why she's a dark horse: Elena is probably the best unseeded player (on clay) in the draw. She won clay week #2 (even if it was only a tier IV) by beating the favorite- Jones. She's definitely a fighter (winning five 3-set matches) and can definitely play with the big guns as she showed last week (taking Mauresmo to 7-6 in the 3rd). Her draw is tough, but she could definitely make some noise!
Clay results: 1 win, 2 quarterfinals, 1 first round
Her draw: Elena is in what is by far the toughest section of the draw, and of any title winner so far this year her draw is definitely the worst! She'll take on the 8th seed and quarterfinalist from last week Nicole Vaidisova in the first round, and in the 2nd round she'd have to play the #9 player Gallovits. If she can get through them, it would be the top seed (potentially) waiting for her. Although her draw is tough, she could be the upset player of Roland Garros!

Flavia PENNETTA
Why she's a dark horse: Although she has played poorly the last few weeks, you can't ignore some of Flavia's top wins! On clay this year she beat the top 2 seeds (Mauresmo & Bammer) and had 2 semifinal finishes! She is very streaky, but if you catch her on a good day she could definitely make a run!
Clay results: 2 semifinals, 2 first rounds
Her draw: Her draw is bad (Radwanska round 1, Bammer round 2) but if Bammer is off just a little bit Flavia could definitely take advantage. She could potentially pull of the biggest upset of round 2, but I wouldn't expect her to win the title. Although she isn't a contender for the whole tournament, she could make a run to the semis if she could knock off Bammer.

Elena LIKHOVTSEVA
Why she's a dark horse: Like Flavia, Elena is not very consistent but she has had some major wins! She beat Amelie and Sybille in 2 different quarterfinals, and was just points away from 2 finals! Like many of the players, she has to play her game and do it well, but if she can, she could definitely make something happen!
Clay results: 2 semifinals
Her draw: One of the biggest reasons Elena is a dark horse is because of her draw. It could be better, but at the same time she has a winning record against her first round opponent and could definitely put up a fight against Ivanovic in round 2. Her draw isn't bad, considering, and she has the kind of game that could take out the seeds in her section (Kirilenko and Ivanovic). Although I don't think Elena has a chance at the title, she surely is a player to look out for!

Predicted Draw:

First Round:

A.Mauresmo [1] def. Bye
M.Sharapova def. S.Williams
E.Gallovits def. T.Tanasugarn
N.Vaidisova [8] def. E.Baltacha

L.Safarova def. A.Sugiyama [7]
E.Takao def. J.Larson
A.Harkleroad def. T.Paszek
S.Jones [3] def. Bye

M.Kirilenko [4] def. Bye
V.Williams def. D.Cibulkova
E.Likhovtseva def. J.Cravero
A.Ivanovic [5] def. J.Henin

L.Davenport [6] def. N.Li
K.Brandi def. A.Chakvetadze
F.Pennetta def. A.Radwanska
S.Bammer [2] def. Bye

Second Round:

A.Mauresmo [1] def. M.Sharapova
N.Vaidisova [8] def. E.Gallovits
E.Takao def. L.Safarova
S.Jones [3] def. A.Harkleroad

M.Kirilenko [4] def. V.Williams
E.Likhovtseva def. A.Ivanovic [5]
K.Brandi def. L.Davenport [6]
S.Bammer [2] def. F.Pennetta

Quarterfinal:

N.Vaidisova [8] def. A.Mauresmo [1]
-Amelie has just really struggled lately on clay. It's a tough draw for her, and Nicole has great tactics. I think Nicole is going to pull this one out in 3, tight sets, and Mauresmo will have to go back to the drawing board if she wants to keep her #1 position!

S.Jones [3] def. E.Takao
-I think Erika has great potential and will do well to get this far, but Sacha is a very tough opponent and, like I said, is considered "the favorite" coming in. She'll be too tough for Takao and take her out in 2 sets.

M.Kirilenko [4] def. E.Likhovtseva
-Although Elena is tough, I think Maria has finally found her form. It will be a very close match, perhaps 7-5 or 7-6 in the 3rd, but Maria will have just enough in the end. Elena will move up the rankings (probably into seeding) by making it this far, but Maria is eyeing a top 3 or even 2 spot!

S.Bammer [2] def. K.Brandi
-I've predicted another newcomer into the quarters, but again they will fall to the experience. It will be a tight match, but Sybille will take it in 2, most likely 6-4 6-4. Kristina will be a force in the future, but this tournament is for the veterans!

Semifinal:

S.Jones [3] def. N.Vaidisova [8]
-This will be a very interesting semifinal. Like always, Nicole will take it late into the 3rd, but Sacha will prove to be too mentally tough. Sacha has been on a mission this clay season, and is really making a run for the #1 rank!

S.Bammer [2] def. M.Kirilenko [4]
-This will be another great semi- a battle between 2 great gameplans both of which I love! It will be a match worthy of a final, but Sybille will prove too tough! Maria will win the first set, but Bammer will come back and take the next 2.

Final:

S.Bammer [2] def. S.Jones [3] 6-4 3-6 6-4
This will be an incredible final to close out a great clay court season. The winner will (probably) take over the #1 spot, but I think Sybille has found her form and will be too much for Sacha. With this win, Bammer will return to the #1 position going into the grass season, but both of these players will be heavy favorites to win 1 (or more) titles during the rest of the year!

Men's Preview

The Favorites:

Marcos BAGHDATIS [1]
Why he's a favorite: Marcos is really the only favorite on the men's side. He won the Australian Open and has a clay court title, and has really been the most consistent player on clay this year. With 8 different men's finalists on clay this year ( ) it's very tough to pick a winner, but Baghdatis knows how to win! He is #1 in the rankings by 1,000 points, and he's been here before!
Clay results: 1 win, 1 semifinal, 1 quarterfinal, 1 2nd round
His draw: Really the only thing going against Marcos: he has a tough draw. In round 2 he could play Houston finalist Verdasco, and afte that he would be up against either the 6th seed Houston champion Nadal or possibly the always dangerous Djokovic. If anyone can make it through a draw this tough, however, it's Baghdatis!

Juan Ignacio CHELA [8]
Why he's a favorite: I've decided I should pick a 2nd favorite. I've chosen Chela because of his performance last week. He blew through the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 6th seeds last week without even dropping a set! He has also beaten Nadal twice (once last week) and has come very close to beating Radford. If he can continue his form from last week, he's definitely one of the favorites!
Clay results: 1 win, 2 quarterfinals, 1 2nd round
His draw: His draw is actually not too bad. He gets Berdych in the first round, who hasn't really produced yet, and his 2nd round opponent cuold be Federer or Cilic: both of whom aren't expected to really do... anything! He can't look at his draw as too easy, but he certainly should be in the quarterfinals where he'll face Nathan Healey and could, potentially, beat him for the 2nd week in a row!

Other Contenders
Who?: Nathan Healey [2], Harley Radford [4], Nikolay Davydenko [5], Rafael Nadal [6]
Why their favorites: Healey has made a quick run up to #2 in the rankings, from #5 2 weeks ago. He's very consistent and, as we saw on Rebound Ace earlier this year, he can beat top players. Harley Radford is another very good player who can get stuff done. He made a final and a semifinal on clay and can challenge any top player. Nikolay won the first clay tournament of the year, but since then really hasn't played well at all. You can't count him out, because of his title win, but at the same time he's certainly not a "clear cut favorite". Nadal is sort of in the same position as Davydenko. He had a tournament win in Houston, but other than that he really hasn't been playing his best on clay. Any or all 5 of these players could have been considered as favorites, but in my opinion they're not at the level of Baghdatis, and really any of them could win or, potentially, be out in round 1! The men's tournament will be intersting, and, although they're short on heavy favorites- they're certainly not short on contenders!

The Dark Horses:

Guillermo CORIA
Why he's a dark horse: A newcomer to the tour, Coria is definitely a solid player! In his debut tournament last week, he got to the semis and was just 2 games from making the final. He didn't have any major wins (other than beating 7th seed Safin) but he definitely has the potential to pull off an upset here!
Clay results: 1 semifinal
His draw: His draw may be a problem though. In the first round, he'll take on fellow darkhorse Filippo Volandri, and, if he can get through that, he'll take on Barcelona winner (who beat Volandri in the final) Nikolay Davydenko. These will be 2 very tough matches for Coria, but, if he is on, he could have a very successful 2nd WMFT week!

Filippo VOLANDRI
Why he's a dark horse: Volandri made the finals of Barcelona in the first clay court tournament, and he had wins over Radford and Ljubicic. He has struggled imensely since making a run to the final (not winning a match  ) but if he can find his form early here, he could make a run!
Clay results: 1 final, 3 1st rounds
His draw: Volandri, like Coria, has a very tough draw! Having to go up against Coria in round 1 will be a challenge, but the winner of that will have a real shot against Davydenko! If he gets through Guillermo and Nikolay he could play Radford, who he has beaten on clay this year.

Fernando VERDASCO
Why he's a dark horse: It's very simple really: he's the only other clay court finalist not mentioned so far. He made a run to the final of Houstno by beating Radford, and he took the first set from Nadal. He hasn't had any really big wins yet on clay, but he could put up a test for Marcos in the 2nd round! He also played well last week in Estoril, where he beat the 4th seed Davydenko and was 2 games from beating Radford.
Clay results: 1 final, 1 quarterfinal, 2 2nd rounds
His draw: Like the other dark horses, is draw is tough! Even tougher than the others! In the first round he has Robin Soderling, but after that he has to play Marcos Baghdatis! He lost to Marcos already on clay this year, but if Marcos is even a little off this could be an interesting mtach! The good news for Verdasco: if he can get through the #1 player in the world he could potentially make it to the semis!

Predicted Draw:

ATP: Roland Garros
First Round Results

R.Soderling def. F.Verdasco 6-2 5-7 7-6(1)
-This win was a good one for Robin. He took down a player that I thought could be a real threat, but Robin was just too good. In my opinion, Fernando's gameplan "looked" better, but it seems that Robin just had all the answers!

R.Gasquet def. N.Djokovic 2-6 6-3 7-5
-Again, this match was a bit of a surprise. Novak is a very dangerous player, but these 2 just had very conflicting game plans and Richard's won. Novak seemed to do everything right, but he just had a bad first round!

R.Nadal [6] def. J.Bjorkman 6-3 3-6 6-4
-Jonas is always a dangerous player, but Rafael is just too consistant. He changed his game plan up well and kept Jonas guessing. Bjorkman has switched his game plan on clay yet, and Rafael knew exactly what to do to win.

N.Davydenko [5] def. A.Roddick 7-6(7) 6-4
-Andy just got unlucky. In the first set they had the same points and since their totals were the same, it went to Nikolay because he's higher ranked. Andy played well, but just fell a little short in the first set. Good win for Nikolay.

G.Coria def. F.Volandri 6-0 0-6 6-4
-This was a very good match from the new comer, in the first and third sets he really showed what he could do. Filippo needs to re-think his game plan if he winds to re-find the form he had earlier in the clay season. As we saw last week from Guillermo, he's a tough player and he could really give Nikolay some trouble.

A.Agassi def. J.Tipsarevic 5-7 7-6(5) 7-6(1)
-This was an excellent match from 2 very on players. They both had the same game plan, but Agassi mixed it up well and had just a little more than Janko.

M.Youzhny [WC] def. H.Radford [4] 7-6(1) 7-6(1) :eek::eek:
-The newcomer pulled off the upset of round one! Both players had similar game plans, and in my opinion Harley's was a little more strategically sound, but Youzhny just did what he had to do, won the big points. Next round against Agassi will be a good chance for a lower-ranked player to get into the grand slam quarters!

N.Almagro def. D.Koellerer 3-6 7-6(0) 6-3
-This was another match with conflicting styles. Both players have good game plans, and as we've seen Daniel can be tough, but the rookie Nicolas seemed like a pro today, winning the important points and making a good comeback.

G.Canas def. J.Johansson 1-6 7-5 6-1
-This was a match of 2 unranked players, and it seemed like it! Both players had strategy-less games and just came out firing. It worked for Guillermo in round 1, but only because Joachim fell apart after that close second set. If Guillermo wants to win his next round he'll need to play more of his game.

M.Safin [7] def. D.Nalbandian 7-6(7) 6-7(0) 7-6(0)
-These 2 players had VERY similar points. David got unlucky in the first set, both players had the same points and surface preference, so Marat, being the seed, won. Both players could use some slight adjustments on their points, but all in all this was a very good match.

J.Chela [8] def. T.Berdych 6-4 6-3
-And Juan Ignacio continues his form from last week! Tomas just seemed very overwhelmed out there, and as we've seen from Chela he knows how to play his game, and that's what won it for him today.

M.Cilic def. R.Federer 1-6 6-1 7-6(3)
-Both players were very streaky in this match. They had very different, yet very similar, strategies, and Marin just had the slight edge in the final set.

P.Srichaphan def. G.Gaudio 6-4 2-6 6-4
-Paradorn has a very nice looking strategy this week, and he put it to work against Gaston. He had a bit of a stumble in the 2nd set, but he played very solid and was just too much. He'll have to elevate his play, however, for his next round against Nathan if he wants to win!

First Round Results

S.Williams def. M.Sharapova 3-6 7-5 7-6(5)
-Maria had a great first set, and all in all I think her points were more technically sound, but Serena just found a way to win! Sharapova has a good strategy, but it didn't work well against Serena.

E.Gallovits def. T.Tanasugarn 6-3 7-6(4)
-This was a good match from Edina. Both players had sort of the same game plan, but Tamarine's just wasn't strong enough. A few more tweeks and it will be good. The match was closer than the score, but Edina was definitely the better player.

N.Vaidisova [8] def. E.Baltacha 7-6(0) 6-4
-Even though the seed won, this was a bit of a surprise. Both players are very good, but Elena has just been playing so well lately! Nicole got down 0-5 in the first set and Elena didn't play very well from there, not closing it out like she could have and let Nicole back in. The 2nd set followed a similar pattern, with Elena taking an early lead... She needs to get those final few games in each set and she'll be at the top!

A.Sugiyama [7] def. L.Safarova 6-1 6-3
-Ai has very hit-or-miss tennis, and today it definitely worked! Lucie was just overwhelmed by a very good game plan from Ai. Ai still doesn't have the "upper-class" game plan of the top players, but with a few changes she could definitely be up there!

E.Takao def. J.Larsson 7-6(3) 6-4
-In another battle of the new comers, the better game plan won. From the start I've said that I really like Erika's plan, and today it worked. Johanna has the potential to be a good player, with a little more variety she could be very good!

A.Harkleroad def. T.Paszek 7-5 7-5
-Although the score was close, Ashley really had Tamira's number right from the start. Tamira really did a little too much pushing, and in her big games it felt like she had too many points. Ashley is a decent player, definitely one that could give Sacha trouble.

V.Williams def. D.Cibulkova 6-3 6-4
-Venus is another player who really seems to know the game! She does a bit too much pushing and at times doesn't go for enough (which will hurt her in the next round) but with some changes she could be very good. I also really like Dominika's game plan... this match was closer than the score, and Cibulkova definitely should have gotten a set, but she's still missing that special something that'll win matches.

J.Cravero def. E.Likhovtseva 7-6(3) 7-6(2)
-This was a very tight match, and I feel like Elena's game plan was better, but Jorgelina just played very well! Cravero has the sort of game plans that matches well against the "elite plans", and today she showed how well she can play. Both players have the potential to be at the very top, but they both still have quite a bit of work to do!

J.Henin [WC] def. A.Ivanovic [5] 6-1 6-4 :eek::eek:
-this was definitely the upset of the day on the lady's side! Justine just played incredibly today, and there was nothing Ana could do! I realy like both players and they have very different styles, but Justine just had the edge today. One thing Henin needs to do though is still adjust her games a little bit. She got lucky and won some big games today, but she got lucky. I don't feel she's really at Ana or the other top 5's levels yet, but she will DEFINITELY be there!

L.Davenport [6] def. Na Li 3-6 6-1 6-4
-Lindsay did what she had to do to win today. Na has a sort of game plan where she doesn't go for much, and Lindsay recognized that (after the first set ;)) and really took advantage.

A.Chakvetadze def. K.Brandi 7-5 6-3
-This was a good win for Anna... she played well. This match was actually very close, with only 1 or 2 points separating the players in several games.

A.Radwanska def. F.Pennetta 7-5 6-7(7) 7-6(5)
-There were 2 big cointosses in this match: 1 to Radwanska at 3-5 in the first set, and won for Pennetta at 6-6 in the 2nd. Both players have similar game plans. I feel Flavia's may actually be better though- Agnieszka goes for a little too much at times. Good win for Radwanska though, she definitely has potential.

Venus soundly through
Faces Kirilenko in second round
http://www.tennisrulz.com/players/vwilliams/gallery02/199.jpg
Venus Williams hits a shot to her first round opponent Tuesday as she placed herself into the second round of Roland Garros with a straight set win.

Venus Williams started off her Roland Garros campaign with a super victory over unknown Dominika Cibulkova 6-3,6-4. Williams won with only two breaks in the entire match. Venus broke at 4-3 in the first set to serve it out after 5 deuces. Williams calmed down and broke quickly in the second set and held serve the rest of the way to win the match.

"I really tried to stay consistent today, I mean yes, there was errors, but she hit them too so I wasnt the only one out there who tanked my shots" laughed Williams.

She faces a very tall task in 4th seeded Maria Kirilenko of Russia who is a very consistent player. Williams knows she needs to clean up her game emmensly and raise up her level of play if she wants to have any chance at taking down a seed.

Youzhny and Henin Oust Seeds On Debut

http://img484.imageshack.us/img484/5656/rg0736uc2nd7.jpg
[WC]Justine Henin (BEL) d. [5]Ana Ivanovic (SRB) 6-1 6-4, [WC]Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) d. [4]Harley Radford (NZL) 7-6(1) 7-6(1)

Newcomers Mikhail Youzhny and Justine Henin got off to flying starts today in their Debut on the WMTF Tour. Mikhail Youzhny had drawn ATP #4 Seed H. Radford and was a HUGE underdog, but despite his much more expereinced opponent he dispatched Radford in two extremely tight sets, 7-6(1) 7-6(1). Meanwhile Henin had a tough task in WTA 5th Seed Ana Ivanovic, Henin defied all expectation and come out with an unexpectedly easy win 6-1 6-4.

Both Players were extremely thrilled with their debut wins but are not expecting too much more from this tournament, "It is really amazing to win on debut, i couldn't ask for a better start, but i don't really expect much more from this tournament, after all it is only my first tournament so i'll leave happy no matter what happens now" commented an elated Henin.

Next up for Mikhail Youzhny is American Andre Agassi, while Henin takes on world number 10 Jorgelina Cravero.

Second Round Results

R.Soderling def. M.Baghdatis [1] 6-2 0-6 6-3 :eek::eek::eek:
-Marcos just played with his points too much . He didn't use what worked, and he paid for it against a very "on" Soderling.

R.Nadal [6] def. R.Gasquet 7-6 (3) 3-6 6-2
-Rafael played great to get the first set. He has a really good strategy, and he knows how to execute it. If he continues this form he could definitely be a contender for the title!

G.Coria def. N.Davydenko [5] 6-0 0-6 6-4
-And another seed goes down . Guillermo is a very good up-and-comer, and he just got the best of Nikolay today. They had very different strategies, and Coria's won

M.Youzhny [WC] def. A.Agassi 6-3 3-6 7-6(6)
-The last set was a one point different . Mikhail got out there and, like in the first round, played incredibly well. They had very similar sytems of points, but Youzhny's was the more... precise.

N.Almagro def. I.Ljubicic [3] 2-6 6-2 7-6(6) :eek::eek:
-Another match where the final set was just a 1 point difference! Ivan just got out played today, bringing to end one of the worst clay seasons on tour! Nicolas is a VERY good player, and he's shwoing that this week. In time, he could definitely be at the top of the game!

G.Canas def. M.Safin [7] 4-6 7-5 6-4
-And another newcomer takes down a seed! Canas definitely knows what he's doing out there, and he realy took it to the 7th seed in the last 2 sets. Safin hasn't changed his points enough, and these players are catching on. It seems like this has been the slam of the newbies!!!

M.Cilic def. J.Chela [8] 1-6 7-6(6) 6-1 :eek::eek:
-This is a very surprising win for Marin. It probably hurt Chela he didn't change his points atleast a little from last week... But Cilic got rather lucky, winning the 2nd set by only 1 point!

N.Healey [2] def. P.Srichaphan 5-7 6-2 6-4
-Definitely not Nathan's best match ever... But he did what he had to to get past an in-form Srichaphan.

Second Round Results

S.Williams def. A.Mauresmo [1] 6-3 7-6(3) :eek::eek::eek:
-And the other 1 seed goes down! Serena has never had the best game plan, but it works really well against Amelie's style. Serena won the big games, and Amelie just didn't do enough at times!

E.Gallovits def. N.Vaidisova [8] 7-5 6-4
-And another rather surprising upset! Nicole had a big chance here, with Amelie gone, but Edina has always been a tough player. These were 2 prime examples of the best pushers vs. the best big-hitters, and it seems that the "pushers" won

E.Takao def. A.Sugiyama [7] 6-4 6-0
-After Ai's easy first round win, she came in as the favorite but Erika really played her game and executed! I've always said I really like her game plan, and it has done well for her here. She knows what games to win and how to do it, and she'll be a tough player in the future.

S.Jones [3] def. A.Harkleroad 6-3 6-0
- Ashley has (what looks like) an attacking style, but she just doesn't go for enough! Sacha has developed a game plan that will win her matches against the "pusher" or just the lower-ranked, less experience player in general.

V.Williams def. M.Kirilenko [4] 7-6(0) 6-3 :eek::eek:
-Antoher huge upset . Venus went out there today like she had nothing to lose, and she played her heart out. It's too bad for Maria, she has a really good style of play... but she came up against a new comer who has the pusher style down, already!

J.Henin [WC] def. J.Cravero 6-1 6-4
-Justine continues her impressive play here! Jorgelina doesn't have enough variety in her game, and Justine spotted that right away! Justine is one of the hardest hitters on tour, and it worked well today against Cravero! This sets up a perfect quarterfinal opportunity for one of 2 newcomers to push into the semifinals of a grand slam!

A.Chakvetadze def. L.Davenport [6] 7-5 6-3
-I really like Anna's half pusher/half basher style of play, and it really messed with Lindsay today. It's not that Davenport had a bad plan, neither of these players did, Anna just played at the top level and won the big games!

S.Bammer [2] def. A.Radwanska 6-4 4-6 6-4
-Finally, antoher seed through! Sybille has a really good game plan for the French Open, but her 2nd set can realy be shaky and is certainly her weakness! Agnieszka went for too much in a lot of her games, and Sybille made her pay.

Amelie Mauresmo's clay woes continue; vows to return to form on Grass with harder hitting.
Launches verbal assault on "bland" players.

http://static.flickr.com/15/98286659_9cd2dd08ed_o.jpg

Amelie Mauresmo lost in her first match at Roland Garros earlier today to Serena Williams. Mauresmo tried to be aggressive, she moved forward, she dictated. Serena, meanwhile, stood 10 feet behind the baseline chasing down every ball and moonballing everything back. "It was pathetic," said the outspoken World #1 after the match. "The way she just tried NOTHING. Uninspiring, bland, boring tennis. There are several other abusers of this beautiful game too. Edina Gallovits, Jorgelina Cravero both spring to mind. Completely pathetic. For me you are out there playing a backboard, not a tennis player, and for someone like me, who likes to really work opponents and play a clever game, it becomes very tiring."

"Don't get me wrong, though, I am not using this as an excuse. I should've prepared better. When grass comes I can confirm I will NOT lose to these players. I will be hitting much harder, that is for sure. I mean I look at Justine Henin, in her debut here, and Sacha Jones and they are both capable of dispatching these types of players and showing them for what they are; unimaginative and boring. So I applaud them for that. And if they can do it there is no reason why I can't, you know, but it just pains me to see players like this winning matches without any thought or inspiration. It annoys me. I just hope somebody worthy wins here in Paris."

After this tournament it is almost certain that Amelie will lose her #1 ranking which she has held since her victory at the Australian Open.

"Yeah, it has been a great time being at the top of the game. But those times are finished for me right now. Grass is coming, though, and I class it as my favourite surface. So I will be back contesting for titles, I should think. I think Sybille or maybe even Sacha will be the new number one. I hope it is whoever wins here. I don't think the world #1 should be without a Grand Slam title, it just doesn't seem right to me.

Thanks, that will be all. My training for Wimbledon begins now while these chumps continue fighting against the backboards that pollute our game."

Venus upsets Kirlenko
Williams moves into the quarters with a straight-sets win
http://www.tribuneindia.com/2003/20030601/sp4.jpg
Venus Williams powers an ace to Russia's Maria Kirilenko during her upset win to reach the quarterfinals. Williams won 7-6(0),6-3.

It's been a day of upsets and the Williams sisters have been part of the buzz that has been winning over seeded players. Serena Williams took out first seeded Amelie Mauresmo in the first match on Chatrier court then followed by that Venus took out fourth seeded Maria Kirilenko of Russia.

"The Williams sisters are for the first time both in the quarterfinals of a major, and it is exciting to see our work being payed off." said Venus.

Williams won over the russian 7-6(0), 6-3 and the match was very tight in the first set with both players breaking once and then holding for the set. Williams then amped it up in the tiebreak and won 4 points at net. The second set was still tight but when Venus was up 4-3 she jumped over 45 mph second serves to break then win the match. Williams next faces wildcard clay queen Justine Henin.

Back to the drawing board.

http://www.tennis.com.cn/bbs/uploadFiles/2005-10/9_1699301_2.jpg

Earlier today Maria Kirilenko experianced the worst one and a half hours of her tennis carrer following a 7-6 6-3 defeat in her first match at Roland Garros. The world number four was beaten by newcomer Venus Williams as Kirilenko was outplayed in all areas. Kirilenko left the stadium dejected and refused to take part in a press conference. However, she did speak to us after she had time to reflect.

"I am so dissapointed today this is the worst day of my carrer so far. I dont know what went wrong, Maybe I was overconfident or I wanted it to badly, I dont know. I am shocked in the way I played it was my worst tennis defenetly. I dont want to make this sound like an attack on Venus, she played incrediably well and Im impressed - she will go a long way all credit to her but I am so upset with how I played. Now it is Grass season though so I will have to get myself prepared for that. I have played nine tournament on the tour and have in my opinion done well in none. Its back to the drawing board again and hopefully on Grass I can finally be proud of my achivements on that surface"

In the second round of Roland Garros only two seeds survived in the Womens draw and another casualty was the world number 1 Amelie Mauresmo. After the defeat Amelie has hit out against 'bland' players and Kirilenko agrees with everyone word Mauresmo said.

"I agree with her. I hate playing people who do not spice up their game. Its not only boring for me but for the specataors aswell. The horrible thing is they beat players like Amelie who love to mix up the game and make it intresting. There are also players that are not commited and never change their gameplan and just stack up their points. I cant stand playing stackers and losing 6-0 6-0 to them. I wish there was somthing to do to stop them but there isnt but then you know why its Amelie, Sybille, Sacha and Myslef up there at the top. We prefer to play a different game and we are commited. I wish Sybille and Sacha the best of luck in their reamining clay matches and also Venus who along with Justine Henin will be members of the top 3 one day Im sure. You can tell when someone comes along with the potential and theyve got heaps of it"

So whats next for Maria?

"Well I want to have consitency now. But consitency of getting to Finals and Winnning not Quarter Finals. I will drop big time after the French Open and If Im lucky I might be in top 10 but that is just not good enough. Im going to work hard to find a winning combination and do my best in the next surface. I want to win Wimbledon and I will try my hardest to do that. It will be difficult but not impossible. I know I can do it"

Pusher= Points are divided up equally, no big games, no small ones, in the hopes that your opponent will have 6 or 7 games at 5/10/15 or less.
ex: 20-20-20-20-20-20-20-20-20-20-05-05-05

Ballbasher= High and low games, usually more low games than high... few "middle" games, like 15 or 20
ex: 35-35-15-10-05-05-35-15-05-30-10-10-05

Extreme Ballbasher (stacker??)= Go for a 6-0 win or the same score all the time. They either win 6-0/6-1/6-2 or lose 7-5. Highest of high games, 0's, no middle games, sometimes just a 0/35.
ex: 35-35-35-35-35-35-00-00-00-00-00-00-00

NOTE: These points I've created are pretty bad, just as examples (no one really puts this little thought into it :p) so I wouldn't suggest using them!

The toughest to play are the "skilled" pushers. I mean, there are pushers that go:

20-20-20-20-20-20-20-20-20-20-00-00-00

They're easy to beat... but it's when you have these kind of pushers, the half-pushers/semi-ballbashers:

05-25-30-10-10-15-15-15-20-20-20-20-00

It's easy to beat a player that has all 20's, you just make sure to have 6 games over 20. But it's when you've got players that are going up to 30, but still have 10+ points in every game, that are tough.

Sybille has officially overtaken me in the rankings. :worship:

She is now #1, as things stand. Sacha has a chance at #1, she would have to win it all while Sybille would have to lose next round.

If Sacha makes it to the Final she will move into #2.

The likelihood at the end is this:

#1-Sybille Bammer
#2-Sacha Jones
#3-Amelie Mauresmo

or...

#1-Sybille Bammer
#2-Amelie Mauresmo
#3-Sacha Jones

.

It will be a shame if Bammer is #1 without a Grand Slam:tape:...but if she does win here then she will be like 1,000 points clear in the rankings.:yeah:

Yeah.I'd rather Sacha wins FO and take the #1.
I'd be losing in the semis or final anyway.
So Sybille must lose next round and hope Sacha wins.
At least Sybille has been #1 before,so I don't think too much on the rankings now.

But I do care about it for Ivan though.:tape: ;)

POLICE INVESTIGATE BALTACHA POISONING

In news just in, it has been reported that WMFT Player Elena Baltacha has been poisoned, at this point we don't know the condition Elena is in, but we do understand that she is in Paris General Hospital, and has been accompanied by her Mother to the hospital.

The ambulance picked up Elena Baltacha from Paris Airport, where she was about the fly home, after losing to Nicole Vaidisova in the 1st round of the French Open. One witness saw Baltacha faint to the floor after reporting being dizzy and then being surrounded by her family and Airport staff.

After 8 minutes the Ambulance was at the scene and knew something was seriously wrong, sadly thats all the information we have at the moment.

But we have been asked to tell everyone watching if you know of any information about this poisoning please write a post, also can any WMFT Players who might have saw any strange going ons on in the hotel where all players are staying for the french open please write a post.

Finally, if anyone can think of any grudges or feuds that Elena Baltacha has with anyone please let us know, it would be very much appreciated.

Quarterfinal Results

R.Nadal [6] def. R.Soderling 3-6 6-4 7-5
-Even though Robin just pulled off the biggest upset in the tournament, this outcome was still expected. Rafael is a very smart player, and he really took it to Robin today. With all of the upsets, he's definitely one of the top favorites to win here!

G.Coria def. M.Youzhny [WC] 6-3 3-6 7-6(2)
-No one really knew what to expect from these 2 newcomers... They've both shown some good potential this week. They had very similar strategies, just in different sets, and Guillermo's, I thought, was a little more solid. Both of these players though will be forces in the future!

N.Almagro def. G.Canas 6-3 7-6(0)
-In yet ANOTHER Rookie vs. Rookie match up, the player who I thought's strategy was better won. Like in the last match, both players had a solid plan, but I've thought right from the start that Nicolas knows how to play, and win!

M.Cilic def. N.Healey [2] 7-6(2) 6-4 :eek::eek:
-Here we have another huge surprise! I thought Nathan might be the savior for the bottom half of the men's draw (Rafael is starting to look like the one on the top half), but Marin just came out firing. Cilic has a strategy that really troubles the top seeds, and, although he doesn't change it often, he's tough to beat. It's too bad for Nathan though, because I really felt like he had a shot to win here!

Quarterfinal Results

S.Williams def. E.Gallovits 7-6(6) 6-4
-And Serena continues her good form! Edina can be a very tough player, and Serena played well to get this over in 2. Had Edina just won that extra point in the first the outcome could have been very different, but Serena went out there and took care of business!

E.Takao def. S.Jones [3] 6-4 6-4 :eek::eek:
-Wow. Just when I thought Sacha might blow through to the final, she smashed into the wall that is: Erika Takao. Takao played incredibly, as she has the first 3 rounds here, and really took it to Sacha right from the start. It’s rare to see Sacha lose 4 and 4, it’s usually 7-5 or 7-6 that she loses, and Erika just came in with the perfect strategy! I really like this girl’s play, and as long as she continues to do what works, she’s a champion in the making!

J.Henin [WC] def. V.Williams 6-1 7-5
-In this match we saw amazing play from another INCREDIBLE newcomer. Justine, like Erika, has not lost a set yet here. They have similar styles of play, and they’ve shown that they are definitely competitors! It’ll be interesting if they can carry it over to the next rounds, and maybe we’ll have a rookie vs. rookie final??

S.Bammer [2] def. A.Chakvetadze 6-3 7-6(0)
-One player you definitely can’t count out until she’s lost is our 2 seed! Sybille has shown lately just how well she can play, and I really like the strategy she has made! This was an easier match than her 2nd round, and she did well to close out the 2nd because if she didn’t, it could have gotten interesting! She sets up what could be 1 very interesting semifinal with the Belgian Wild Card!

Venus Williams reacts after hitting her 59th unforced error to lose her serve at 5 all in the third set. Williams lost to Henin in straight sets.

Venus Williams lost in her bid for a grand slam titles in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros to clay master new coming Justine Henin of Belgium. Williams lost handily 6-1,7-5. Venus was a bit stunned after the loss.

"She just played so dangerously and kept retreating her shots back and I just made errors, but she played one hell of a match. I hope that my sister, Serena, will take care of business in this event." said Williams, who seemed in a hurry to get out of the press room.

Venus will now go back to the USA to prepare for the grass season, in hopes of claiming her first titie sometime soon this season. Venus wishes Henin luck and wants her sister to win as well.

"I feel good about my win, no? I cannot esperar para jugar Rafaeal because he play well on clay tambien." said Coria, in a broken-English interview.

Coria started off keeping up with the powerful Russian, then started to hit deeper and frustrate the 6'3" tower. Coria lost a bit of focus in the second, but held his composure to win in thie third set. VAMOS LLERMO!

BALTACHA AWAKES AND 5 TENNIS PLAYERS ARE NAMED AS SUSPECTS

In astonishing news, Elena Baltacha has awoken and told the police everything she knew from the night before she collapsed at Paris Airport. Straight after the interview, the police named 5 suspects from the WMFT Tour.
The suspects are as follows:

1) AMELIE MAURESMO- World number 1 Mauresmo was the first named suspect, from what we heard there's a chance that Elena and Amelie had a bust up at a tournament a couple of weeks a go and this was Amelie's time for revenge.

2) SASCHA JONES- A brilliant tennis talent but is she the mysterious poisoner, from reliable sources, we hear Sascha wasn't Elena's biggest fan especially after their epic match in Estoril which Elena won.

3) MARIA KIRILENKO- Superly talented Kirilenko is a great looking girl but is she capable of poisoning Baltacha. We hear these 2 get on well, but Maria lost to Elena earlier in the clay season and what better time to get revenge, than at the biggest clay court event in the world.

4) NICOLE VAIDISOVA- Nicole was Elena's 1st round opponent this week, and sparks have been flying between these 2 recently, apparently we hear there was a cat fight on the night of the poisoning between these 2 players.

5) ERIKA TAKAO- The most shocking suspect is the current semi-finalist in Paris, Erika Takao who is a newcomer to the tour has been acting very suspiciously this week and could be the shock poisoner. Also there are rumours that Erika laughed when she heard the news about Baltacha.

One final bit of news is that the substance used to poison Baltacha was actually Heroin, the heroin was mixed up in her sparkling water. Finally Baltacha hopes to be ready for next week's event where she says the tour better be ready for the return of the bitch.

Rafael really showed why he was the #6, and has a title, in this match. He really outsmarted Coria who, in the 1st and 3rd sets anyway, was just bashing the ball. Coria hit everything in the first and overpowered Nadal, but Rafael stuck with it and, after blowing the the 2nd, saved up enough to outlast Guillermo in the 3rd. Wow. The 25th ranked player has made the final of a grand slam! Nicolas has played incredibly this week and has really earned his spot in the final, taking advantage of a bottom half that really fell apart! Marin has a good strategy, but he hasn't changed it the whole clay season and it didn't work well against Almagro. I'm incredibly impressed with Almagro's style, and his ability to come up with this strategy in just his second tournament!. He has a very similar set up, but different strategy, than Nadal so it should be an interesting final!

E.TAKAO def. S.WILLIAMS 6-1 6-7(4) 6-2 :worship:

:worship::worship: Wow. The coach of the tournament is certainly PSALT, both of his players have made it to the final of their first grand slams... and only 2nd tournament! Erika played incredibly the entire match. For the first time the ENTIRE tournament she looked nervous, serving for the final at 5-3 then returning at 5-4. With the exception of the end of the 2nd set, Erika was untouchable! She is CERTAINLY a player to look for in the future, because this run is not just a fluke, she has the game!

Vamos.

puhlease, PSALT ain't no big deal. Wait till he comes here and he can tell you himself how much I own him. I wish I had played Erika:p

Except Nico is really good.

Win it all Erika!

:worship:Congratulations to Sybille on making a grand slam final! Like Rafael, she has sort of saved the draw- keeping what little of it is left in form. Justine has a good plan, but she just needs a little more tactical work. Her plan worked well to take the 2 sets to tiebreaks, but it still seemed as though Sybille was really in control (except at 5-1 down in the first :p). Sybille has created a very original strategy, especially in her 2nd set, and so far it has worked! (but it really could be her downfall if against the right person...) Regradless, this was an incredible opening tournament for Justine, and for Sybille this is just the tournament she wanted. The final against Erika should be a good one!

GREAT tournament from Rafa!:worship:. Unlucky for Nicolas in the final though... 7-6(6) means that he only lost the first set by 1 point!. Like I said, these 2 had very similar strategies, but they put their best forth at different times, and in the 3rd set you could see that Nicolas was really out of gas, and Rafael was at his best from the whole tournament!

Sybille played terribly 2 different times in this set. In game #3 she was serving and the game went to 8 deuces  but once Sybille lost it, she just mentally fell apart and handed Takao a 5-1 lead... Then, after storming back to 5-5, she once again just seemed to fall apart. Not to take anything away from Erika though, she is playing incredibly well against the 2 player in the world and is really hitting with her out there!

This was the best set of WMFT tennis that I can remember! After Sybille broke early on then was re-broken, both players played the best tennis I've seen in, well, forever! These are 2 of the games top "semi-basher" gameplans, and they are working so well here in the final! It's too bad for Erika though that it'll be going to a third, because just 2 more points in her final game and it would be over!

Bammer Wins French Open

http://www.fft.fr/cms/ColdData/docs/28/2828.jpg

WMTF's WTA Tour #2 Sybille Bammer successfully won her third career title in Paris after battling past Japan's Erika Takao 5-7,7-6(6),6-4 in the final.

Bammer served first to start off the match and won the game to love. Both players had to play 8 deuces on the third game when the #2 was serving.Bammer failed to hold her serve and seemed lost from then on.Takao, who eliminated #3 ranked Sacha Jones in the quarterfinal, took advantage of it and led the set 5-1.Bammer made a comeback to level the set 5 all by saving 3 match points along the way. However,Bammer couldn't continue her comeback and lost her steam.Takao went on the clinch the first set 7-5.

In the second set,Bammer broke her opponent's service game but was broken again by Takao later to even the set at 3 all. Both players held their serve later and it reached a tiebreak after trading their last service game. The tiebreak showcased some fantastic points and Takao had a championship point.Bammer held her nerves and hit a overhead shot to save the point and later claimed the set with a backhand down the line winner.

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3217/sybille.jpg

The match had to go for a deciding set where Bammer once again served first for the set.Takao broke the Austrian's serve in the fifth game with a drop volley but later Bammer made a mini-cameback once again and broke back at the eighth game. She held her serve to love in the next game to be up in the set 5-4 and Takao served to stay in the match.Takao double faulted and hit her forehand crosscourt wide when leading 30-0 before Bammer hit a return winner to set up her first championship point. It was down to Takao who was hitting her second serve after first serve hit into the net.She hit her serve wide within the service line and B
