Robinson Win Long Island Match
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Filed at 6:50 p.m. ET
OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (AP) -- Shadisha Robinson upset No. 5 Mashona Washington of Houston 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 Tuesday in the opening round of the Long Island Classic.
The 17-year old Robinson, eliminated in the second round of junior competition in the French Open and Wimbledon, used the experience she gained from the pair of setbacks in Europe.
``I'm a newcomer on the ITF women's circuit,'' Robinson said after ousting Washington, ranked No. 126 in the world. ``At the French Open, and also at Wimbledon, I didn't have the draw on my side, since I was playing in them for the first time. I'm still an amateur, so I have to keep working hard.''
In the only other upset Tuesday, Amber Liu eliminated No. 7 Mi-Ra Jeon of Korea 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
TheBoiledEgg Jul 17th, 2002, 01:17 PM so Irina beat Jackie then if there wasn't any other upsets
bad luck Jackie  but go Irina ;)
Shadisha has to remember that the players in the Junior slams are alot better quality than at a 50K event.
well done Amber

OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (July 17, 2002 6:35 p.m. EDT) - Elena Tatarkova, ranked No. 173 in the world, upset top-seeded Laura Granville 6-3, 6-4 Wednesday in the first round of the Long Island Classic.
Tatarkova broke Granville, ranked No. 91 and a Wimbledon quarterfinalist last month, four times en route to the victory.
In other first-round matches, Miho Saeki outlasted No. 3 Milagros Sequera 6-3, 3-6, 6-4; second-seeded Yoon-Jeong Cho advanced with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Sandra Cacic; and Ansley Cargill, the No. 8 seed, ousted Jessica Fernandez 6-3, 6-4.
V.Melb Jul 18th, 2002, 12:27 AM Miho and Yoon-Jeong :)
Miho needs the points. ;)
Good win by Cho because Sandra is a good player.
Yoon-Jeong loves the fast surfaces though - i think hardcourts may be her favourite.

elena played really well against jelena at wimbledon ... nice win for her :)
congrats to miho and yoon jeong as well :) ... milagros  jessica
Hurley Jul 18th, 2002, 03:14 AM My friend and I went today...not too many spectators. The Bronx Challenger gets far more people. :(
Other winners are:
Bartoli over Torres, 7-5 6-0 :D This was a great match. Torres was frustrating Bartoli during many forays to the net during the first set, but after clinching the set, Bartoli started hitting far too hard for a saddened Torres to compete in the second. Bartoli, of course, once again impressed me with her ability to crush returns from way inside the baseline.
Rao def. McCain.
Lenhoff def. Lastra.
Czink def. Geznenge, 6-0 for Melinda in the first set. Geznenge has a decided lack of game, though has a reasonably powerful first serve. Too bad she never got it in.
Yoshida def. Krivencheva in straight sets, something like 6-3 6-2. Sveta had numerous medical timeouts and was very annoyed with some bad calls during the second set. She hits hard but she was spraying all day. Yuka, to her credit, hits a very nice ball, but this was Sveta's to lose, and lose she did.
Fernandez is far too overweight to compete. She needs to lose at least 15 lbs.
Sequera lost her final game at love...she gave up.
That's all I know...we're going back tomorrow :)
Hurley Jul 18th, 2002, 03:17 AM Found these...these seem right ;)

Jakeev Jul 18th, 2002, 05:21 AM Sorry it was at the expense of Laura Granville, but I am glad to see Elena Tartarkova back in the mix again.
I hope she makes a big splash and who knows, maybe she will fine more success the second time around.
Eric_tennis Jul 18th, 2002, 05:25 AM Poor Mi-ra. Congrats, Amber.
I knew the match-up would be dangerous to Mi-ra. I saw Amber's matches and training session before. She's not a big hitter but a fighter. So to say, kind of Mi-ra's nemesis style. ;)
It could have been another story if Mi-ra passed the 1st round hurdle. Mi-ra was not confident and comfortable with her game before leaving for the event. :(
Hope she can get her form soon.
Better luck next week, Mi-ra & Laura!

Bradshaw's losing streak is now extended to 14 matches!   :fiery:  I don't count her win over Viollet because my brother saw that match and Viollet got blatantly screwed on 2 of her 3 match points. C'mon Allison! Win a f*cking match!
Hurley Jul 18th, 2002, 11:47 PM Just got back...didn't see much today. First of all, it was friggin hot and humid...disgusting. :(
More people today :D Lots of loud kids though :(
Selyutina d. Czink, 6-1 7-6...it's easy to see how Irina does so well in lower-tier events, she hits the ball so deep. Her shots would get eaten alive by the likes of a Williams or a Henin, but at a $50K they do just fine. Czink seemed to be finding her rhythm by the end of the match, and did have a set point on the Selyutina serve at 5-6, but Irina was too consistent today.
Then my friend and I got exhausted during and left following...
Cho def. Bartoli, 6-4 6-7 6-2. :( Marion knows us by now as her fans (read: stalkers :)) and she kept looking over at us during her loss. Cho is probably one of the worst draws on the Tour for Marion at this point in her career; used to blasting away juniors with her lasers, she couldn't do that with Cho, who is so quick and gets everything back. Yoonjeong has some rifles of her own and the first two sets were sparkling.
Marion blew a 5-2 lead in the second; indeed, after not being able to serve out the set at 5-3, she became despondent and really got down on herself (something she desperately needs to work on). Cho won 4 straight games and served for the match at 6-5, but got nervous. Marion started to paint the lines again and broke for 6-6 and took the TB, 7-4 I think.
Marion likes coming into the net, which is an admirable trait, but Yoonjeong has a great pass and a Perfect-with-a-Capital-P lob, and burned Marion often with those shots. Marion needs to stick her volleys better, and not hit them right back to the opponent as much. Serving at 2-1, Marion lost her cool and her serve. Marion looks fit, but her stamina leaves something to be desired, and after Yoonjeong held for 4-1, Marion was visibly limping and swooning and crying -- literally -- on the court. She fought hard but couldn't strike back, as Yoonjeong was still untroubled by the 90-degree heat and oppressive humidity. Marion saved three match points with trademark gumption, but Yoonjeong closed her out and was very excited to do so. Marion left the court weeping, but she played the 2 seed very well and will surely have better finishes in the coming weeks.
That was a nearly three-hour ordeal and my friend and I were spent, so we split. I can GUESS at other winners...
Cargill won her first set 6-4 over Lehnhoff and I'm pretty sure she won the match since it wasn't going on when we left....
Oh, Tatarkova is definitely a winner over Cochran. 6-3 7-5 sounds correct.
Um...Saeki-Rao was over by the time we got there...Sunitha was walking around seemingly content, but I would think Miho won that one if it ended in an hour...
That's all I know :)
Hurley Jul 18th, 2002, 11:53 PM I saw Bradshaw walking around the park today. She looks fit...can't figure out why she's losing all these matches. :(
V.Melb Jul 19th, 2002, 12:50 AM Everything you said about Yoon-Jeong was completely right.... are you impressed with her? - i was greatly impressed with her the first time i saw her play.
Great report once again - i am glad you notice the same things in Yoon-Jeongs game that i noticed. ;)
As for Bartoli - she should be rather happy that she chalenged Yoon-Jeong like that .... Yoon-Jeong is not going to lose to you - you have to beat her... at no point in a match is she going to lose the plot and spew errors everywhere --- When Marion gets more experience her game will improve for shure - but tough long matches like this are all part of the learning experience! ;)
Congrats to Miho IF you won ;)
CoryAnnAvants#1 Jul 19th, 2002, 12:52 AM Hurley, did you see allisons singles or doubles match by chance? Or anybody for that matter? I'm definitely going to go see in her the open qualies this year (hopefully the USTA won't give her a WC into the main draw. She just needs a win period)

Looks like all the veterans are advancing at the expense of the Rising New Stars this week. Well, good for them! :) It's especially nice to see Elena T. and Irina S. coming to life in Oyster Bay.
Jem Jul 19th, 2002, 02:56 PM Great report, Hurley. Many thanks for the match reports.
Ansley Cargill made a huge mistake turning pro. She should have stayed at Duke, got a great education and then gave the tour a shot. It would have still been there. Jessica Lenhoff must be one smart young woman. She was touted as a rising U.S. junior star several years ago, played a few challenger/satellites and went virtually no where. Then she went to college (even if it was the University of Florida), improved her game and is now having a good run at establishing a pro career. I've seen her play several times, and she's got loads of talent. Hopefully, she will crack the top 100.
danker Jul 19th, 2002, 04:58 PM Well done Miho, Akiko, Yoon-Jeong and Jane. :D
Yuka
A pity since she's beaten Seda before. :(
Jem, a good point about Ansley. I was quite surprised she decided to turn pro after her Freshman year. I wonder which road Amber Liu is going to choose...
Vanity Jul 19th, 2002, 06:01 PM I'm just glad to see Irina Selyutina winning some matches again. I thought she'd break out on the tour this year, but it never happened. At least she's winning here again. :)

*roddicksinme* Jul 20th, 2002, 04:04 AM thanks Hurley!:)
setpoint Jul 20th, 2002, 04:10 AM Who are the other two semi-finalists?
TheBoiledEgg Jul 20th, 2002, 04:51 AM OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (AP) -- Jessica Lehnhoff, in her rookie season as a professional after finishing as runner-up in the NCAA tournament in May, beat Miho Saeki 6-4, 6-4 Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Long Island Tennis Classic.
The 22-year-old Lehnhoff, who played at Florida and lost to Wake Forest's Bea Bielik in the women's singles final, has won one singles title and been part of three doubles champions in her first year on the International Tennis Federation circuit.
In other quarterfinal matches in the hardcourt tournament, second-seeded Yoon-Jeong Cho beat Jane Chi 6-4, 6-3; ,fourth-seeded Irina Selyutina defeated Akiko Morigami 6-3, 1-6, 6-3; and Elena Tatarkova overcame a loss in the first set to beat sixth-seeded Seda Noorlander, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

IndyRichie ;) Irina's little slump? She has played 11 main draw this year and she only has 1 win, against a 16 year old WC ranked out of the top 500. That's what I call total colapse :p

I wonder if this win will take you into the top 100?
well.... you are a very effective hardcourt player and you can attack as well as you defend so you deserve all the success you get :)
Keep working hard and you will go even further!
Congrats!  ;) :)

danker Jul 22nd, 2002, 06:03 PM Congrats to Yoon-Jeong. :bounce:
Nice to see her gaining her form back again, after an ordinary year so far. :)
Her rank has moved up to 103. She has a lot to defend at the end of the year, so it's best she gets as many points now.
