Welcome to the Tier III clay tournaments on WMFT! This is the last week before Roland Garros, and everyone is looking for the title! Argintina's Guillermo Coria is coming to the WMFT and has much to say about his game and excitment.

"Si estoy muy emocionado para comenzar jugando tenis en profesionales situaciones pero quiero ganar!" said the Spanish speaking player.

Translation to follow but Coria plays Marat Safin who has a monster serve and is ranked seventh!

Sacha Jones is ready

Sachas is arguable the best Clay court player. She made the final last week at the Tier I event, and won the Tier II event.
Sacha refused to do a full interview this week and has been training hard - she only said one thing......'I'm ready'

Williams is joining her sister in tennis and halting her modeling career.

Venus Williams has joined her older sister Serena in the WMFT this week in an odd place, Strasbourg. The older Williams sister asked late Tuesday night for a wild card into the clay tune-up for Roland Garros. Venus has a game similar to Serena's, but claims to be much different.

"Well we both like to hit hard, but I feel that on clay I am a bit more patient then her, and oh a big difference will be the amount of photographers at our matches, I will have a bigger crowd" laughed Williams, who hopes everyone knows that she is joking.

Venus will take on a tough, tall task in Nicole Vaidisova in Wednesday's opening round match. Venus hopes that the Czech will be nervous to see a woman taller than her and that can keep up with her big strokes. Venus hopes for success and your support!

Venus Williams is stretched out for a backhand against 8th seeded Nicole Vaidisova.

Venus Williams did not have the debut she had hoped for. The American model lost to eighth ranked Nicole Vaidisova today in the first round of Strasbourg 6-4,4-6,7-6(0). Williams was just a bit fatigued to pull out the third set tiebreaker and Nicole just kept her balls in play to enforce the shut out.

"She just kept all the balls in like a smart person would in a crucial tiebreak, I was trying to push to hard, and it just failed everytime" said Williams who made seven straight errors to give away the match.

Nicole and Venus were tight the entire match, each holding serve until it was time for the other to serve to stay in each set. The third set had no breaks of serve, and 10 games went to deuce. This match was the longest of the opening rounds. Williams heads to Paris for preparation for Roland Garros, and maybe a quick photo shoot.

Marat Safin literally FELL to Guillermo Coria Wednesday in the wildcards opening match of his season.
Guillermo Coria made a successful entrance to the tennis world today by defeating Marat Safin 6-2,1-6,6-4 to make the second round of the Estoril tournament. Coria played to upset the Russian and consistancey overcame power.

"Pienso que mi consistencia gane el partido entre Safin y yo pero la proxima partido iria mas dificl entre Cilic" said Coria.

Coria sliced and diced his way to net, and utterly pissed Safin off to no extent of what he could do to beat him. Coria faces M. Cilic who defeated Gasquet in 3 sets. VAMOS CORIA! :bounce:

Amelie was expected to win, this was the first time that Dominika had versed a top 4 ranked player. Amelie has never versed Elena Baltacha before, should be a very close match.

E.Baltacha def. A.Sugiyama [7] 1-6 7-6(4) 7-5

Elena beat Ai 7-5 4-6 7-5 in Estoril, was a similar scorline here. Elena seems to have a bit of an edge over the seeded players here (has a winning record over Sacha and Maria) - is the darkhorse to win the title

Ana has only ever lost to 2 players on the tour (Edina and Nicole, excluding W/Os) despite playing in 6 tournaments so far :eek:

Coming into this match Lindsay had a 2-1 Win-Loss record over Ashley - although both times Lindsay won it went to a third set tiebreak. Ashley fell just short again today.

Unsurprisingly it was the first time these two girls had met. Nicole is on a roll beating two dangerous wildcards.

Last time these two met Flavia won in three close sets. I was expecting her to do the same again at this match, but Sybille won this tight match. Shes now favoured to make the final (having a higher ranking than Nicole, having a 1-0 H2H record with Sacha, although she has a 0-1 H2H ranking with Lindsay)

Coria slides to a volley during his quarterfinal win over Koellerer

Wildcard Guillermo Coria has made his way into the semifinals of the Estoril Open Thursday with a win over unseeded David Koellerer 7-6(5),0-6,6-0. Coria and Koellerer were playing a very tight first set, trading 2 breaks early, then holding serve to form until the tiebreak. The second set Coria looked at sea and Koellerer relaxed and started coming to net. But Coria turned things right around in the third and bageled him because he was keeping the ball so deep. Coria had an on-court interview after his match and spoke broken English.

"I tired him down, no? The match went well, but I have to be ready to play better seed in semifinals, no?" said Coria.

He plays H.Radford who is seeded fifth in the tournament. He is one of two seeds remaining in the draw. The other semifinal consists of Juan Ignacio Chela and top seeded Marcos Baghdatis. This should be fun!

All the pressure is on Marcos for Roland Garros, he is just so expected to win there.

Keep my away from pathetic ballbashers at RG please. (Chela, Roddick etc).

Amelie was expected to win this, and indeed she did - yet another match where Amelie wins in a third set tiebreak

Ana Ivanovic has a winning record over Maria heading into this, but Maria won the title last week. The player with the better H2H record prevailed, and she could well make it to the final.

Sacha had a better H2H record (beating Lindsay on both RA and Clay) and it wasnt a fairytale third time lucky for Lindsay. Still she put up a good fight.

Strangely enough these two girls had never met before this match, but with Sybille's clay court form Nicole was possibly the favourite leading into this match. Sybille has a higher ranking though, and she won in straight sets. She beat Sacha Jones when they last played (in Sydney). Looks like it could be another Amelie, Sybille final.

I think it would be much, much better to upload the head-to-head file somewhere on the WMFT forum so it is accessible to everyone. I know I would like access to it. Is there no way you could adapt the file and then make a topic and have it "important" in the forum?

Even if you just typed everyone's head-to-head in a separate post. Take a look at the WGTA Head-to-Head topic and copy that format. :shrug:...it would be nice!
