WMFT: Women's & Men's Fantasy Tour
Week #8
WTA: Rome

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/3/global/graphics/logos/rome.jpg

This week will be the clay court Tier I tournament, and for the women we'll be in Rome! The draw will be a little smaller this week as many players were retired last week, but it won't be any short on competition! Who will come away with the 2nd Tier I title of the year? Will Elena Baltacha continue her dream run, will Amelie Mauresmo return to form, or will someone new emerge? Good luck to everyone!

WMFT: Women's & Men's Fantasy Tour
Week #8
ATP: Monte Carlo

http://www.atptennis.com/5/graphics/tournamentlogos/montecarlo_140x129.gif

Welcome to Monte Carlo! Last week, we saw Rafael Nadal take him his first title, will he win this week as well? Will Healey finally return to the top? Will someone new emerge as a champion, or will our Australian Open change find success on the clay? Good luck to everyone this week!

*NOTE: This week, I put both tournament previews and the draws in the same post, instead of two seperate ones. It will save me some time when I attach the draws... that's pretty much the only reason

Exactly :)

This game is being run very, very well by you. It looks very professional, its got realistic scores of the match (in terms of the closeness of matches) and its a mystery why we havent got 200 people playing this yet!

World Number One Mauresmo Sets Sights on Paris.

http://www.futuretennisstars.com/images/players/Amelie%20Mauresmo.gif

Q. You stated in an interview with TENNIS Magazine that you were placing Rome at the front of your Roland Garros preparation, why is that? What makes Rome, or Italy, so special?

AM: I like to watch The Sopranos (laughing). No, I just want to do well here. Yeah it is definitely my main preparation ahead of Paris. I love the city and it kind of reminds me of Paris in many ways...the atmosphere is similar. So definitely. I want to do well here. Definitely.

Q. How is the shoulder?

AM: Not bad, it is getting better. I was hitting on the practice courts today with Elena and it was fine. So I am just hoping that it holds up for the whole tournament, that would be good.

Q. Would you venture that the shoulder is partly to blame for some early losses on clay?

AM: Possibly, possibly. But there are a few reasons. It is hard, you know, to move from one surface to another. You have to find your footing. I knew it would be tough so that is why I set my sights on this tournament, rather than one of the earlier ones, definitely. Also I'm just kind of enjoying my honeymoon after the Australian, for sure. It has been a crazy time, but a fun time. Now it is back to business. I need to get some good clay matches in before Paris.

Q. How crucial do you think that is?

AM: How crucial what is?

Q. Getting some claycourt tennis under your belt prior to Roland Garros.

AM: It is pivotal to my success. To everyone's success at that tournament, for sure. We all need to practice.

Q. Do you think the likes of Baltacha, the players who have already done well on clay, have an advantage for Paris now?

AM: They may think they do, but no. The big players will be ready come Paris. Right now it is all about tuning and finalising our games and then aiming to peak for Roland Garros. I mean, no offence to her, but I doubt Baltacha will be in the later stages of Paris. It just won't happen. Sybille and I have both struggled so far on clay but come Roland Garros we will both be playing well, I am sure...

Q. Speaking of Sybille, you two are incredibly far ahead from anybody else in the rankings. Do you think anyone has the ability to contend with you two?

AM: Likhovtsova, Davenport, Tanasugarn, Hantuchova, Harkleroad, Dementieva...to name but a few. These players are improving and some of them are incredibly talented. The rankings don't lie but they don't mean everything either; it is all relative at this stage, the rankings really don't demonstrate who the best claycourt players are. That will be easier to see after Paris has finished.

Q. Who do you regard as your main competition right now? Who else can you envisage lifting that trophy in Paris in a few weeks time?

AM: I think only a few players are ready to win a Grand Slam. Very few. I actually don't believe Sybille is one of them, to be honest. I would say Likhovtsova and Lindsay are two Grand Slam champions in waiting. I can see either of them lifting the trophy. But, then again, I said that in Melbourne. I would say I am the out and out favourite; it is just a case of doing it. Right now I am focused on here though, Roland Garros is rapidly approaching but it is not quite here yet!

Q. Thank you for your time Amelie, good luck here in Rome.

BALTACHA HITS BACK AT MAURESMO

After hearing recent comments made about her by world number 1 Amelie Mauresmo, Elena Baltacha has been quick to hit back against Mauresmo, making the following comments just ahead of the 1st round at Rome. When asked about the comments made about her, she responded as follows

Baltacha: "I couldn't believe what i was hearing, i found it quite cocky, arrogant and disrespectful. I have never shown any disrespect against any other players, and give credit to other players when they have performed well. Those comments have made me even more determined to do well here and at Roland Garros, and i would love to face Amelie in front of her home crowd and prove that i am a worthy competitor, and deserve to be on the big stage.
Finally, Amelie you should never underestimate your opponents because you'll regret it in the future, but you have had a great season so far and i send my best wishes for forthcoming tournaments"

Okay, time for results!

I've decided on this for this tournament and the ones to follow:

Quarterfinal- Best Match= "Fancy" Live scoring, other 3 matches= "Plain" live scoring
Semifinal & Final- all matches "Fancy" Live scoring

It takes more time than you would think to do the fancy scores, so and to do all 4 quarterfinals is too much. So, i'll do it set by set, but it will just be plain.

Kirilenko defeats Vaidisova to progress into Rome Final

http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/sp/getty/d3/fullj.getty-76184554cc063_u_s_open_day_.jpg

Russian Maria Kirilenko seems to have got her season back on track following a 6-1 7-5 win over Czech Nicole Vaidisova in the semi finals of the Italian Open in Rome. The wins that have lead to this final, which has included a defeat over world number 1 Amelie Mauresmo, has been her first since Hobart back in the Rebound Ace season. Due to numerous defeats her ranking has dropped to ninth but if she was to win the tournament here she could see that all change. She started of this tournament with a second round win over fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze, she then folllowed that with an upset over Mauresmo and then today followed that up with what was her most impressive tennis so far in this tounrnament.

http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/sp/getty/f8/fullj.getty-76184554cc067_u_s_open_day_.jpg

Kirilenko started the strongest, serving powerfully and hitting some amazing down the line winners. Nicole picked up her tennis and started to respond to Makiri but Kirilenko had the answers and wrapped up the first set 6-1. The start of the second set was more of the same but mid way the rallies started to get longer the grunts started to get louder and the Double Faults and Unfourced Errors started pouring from Maria as Nicole took control. However Maria was still in a strong position despite her strange incapibility to convert match points. She managed to choke away 6 of them along with a 5-3 lead before putting away the match with a beautifully timed forehand volley in 1 hour and 23 minutes.

http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/sp/getty/3d/fullj.getty-76184554cc064_u_s_open_day_.jpg

After the match Maria said at her press conference "I am very happy with my win today though I would say my performance was a bit up and down. I played a good first set and I think I was playing my best tennis for 6 weeks or so but in the second set I tensed up and choked which was very bad and somthing I will have to make sure I dont do in the final. Thankfully, I managed to close it out eventually. All credit to Nicole she really made me work for this so I am very happy I came out on top. It is nice to be in a final again and be playing a good match. I have had some low points but I have came through them so I have to be happy"

http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/sp/getty/55/fullj.getty-76112935mh049_u_s_open_day_.jpg

When asked about the final against New Zealander Sacha Jones she said "She has a great game. She is a great performer and I will have to be at my best to win. I really hope I can though. Her game adapts really well to each surface which shows she has no weaknesses. It will be a hard match - a very hard match but I am just happy to be winning and being able to play in this final. Tommorow I will give it everything Ive got but the main focus is winnning Roland Garros. But I cant be distracted. At the moment all my thoughts are on tommorows match and playing to the best of my ability"

http://tennishi.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/amelie-mauresmo2.jpeg

The real beginning

Contrary to what the title suggests it actually started off before Round Two, it started off with a particular news article which featured Amelie Mauresmo not even mentioning Sacha Jones' name. Sacha got very upset about this, and was caught serving at bottles of coke with Amelies face on them. She hit 10/10, something that clearly showed in her mind that she had a chance to go far this week.

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u87/ldavenport24/sacha1.jpg

The start of something new

In Round One Sacha had a bye, but instead of training she instead viewed the match which would determine her 2nd Round opponent. The match was very enjoyable to watch, but Sachas good friend Tamarine Tanasugarn lost in three sets to Agnieska Radwanska. Although the second set was very close the first and last set certainly wasnt. Sacha knew her match against Agi would be tight.

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u87/ldavenport24/sacha2.jpg

That darn second round

Sacha's match was the last to be played on Day Two, so she decided to watch some tennis again. It wasnt exactly the happiest day of viewing for her. AO runner up and good friend Harley Radford lost in straight sets, followed by her other good friends Sybille and Ashley both loosing. To make things even worse she witnessed Tamira Paszek winning 6-0 6-0, Sacha knew that if she beat Agi then Tamira would be her quarterfinal opponent.
Eventually Sacha was up. The match was close, but despite Sacha loosing the second set she seemed pretty relaxed as she won in three sets. She did however give alot of praise for her opponent.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42595000/jpg/_42595901_tennis_416.jpg

Quarterfinal Quality!

Sacha went into her Quarterfinal expecting a 6-0 6-0 scoreline in Tamiras favor. The first set went as most people would have expected with Tamira winning it. The second set was alot closer and at 6-6 and 4-4 in the tiebreak Tamira served a double fault, and to add pain to injury Sacha then served two aces to force a third set. The third set was another absolute thriller, it could have easily gone either way. But yet again at the deciding stages in the tiebreaker Sacha just eased away and eventually won the tiebreak 7-4 to take the match 4-6 7-6 7-6. Sacha fell to the ground sobbing. Tamira's coach screamed out 'if Sacha dies does Tamira win by default' (much to the crowds amusement). Tamira ran over to Sacha and gave her a big hug.

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u87/ldavenport24/sacha3.jpg

Strange Semi?

Sacha knew going into this match that if she won it then she would be ranked third next week, but if she lost it then she would have to rely that Maria Kirilenko looses the final otherwise Sacha remains down in fourth.
The Semifinal started off badly for Sacha, but then started a flurry of points to win the first set 6-3. Sacha doesnt ever seem to play well historically speaking (loosing a second set and another one going to a tiebreak), but today was different and Sacha easily won the second set to move into her third final. Her opponent will be Maria Kirilenko who she gained alot of respect for, especially for beating Amelie Mauresmo.

The last line goes to Sacha Jones

'Never underestimate me....Thomas, Amelie, Sybille...'

Well,if you win, that'll be great too!:D But Sybille will just go down from the rankings and be an unknown soon if she couldn't even win one match on her favourite surface.

Dont worry Sacha was pretty useless on her best surface (loosing in the first round of AO, Week 1, Week 2)

Oh and another thing: You'll still stay number two, you deserve to be there. Its just that Sacha could have easily fallen out of the top 10 this week

Well,it's useless for Sybille who just won her first title where none of the players were committed when the game was introduced. And it happened to be a Tier I which Sybille won,so that's why she got her #1 position. So we'll see.If I don't get any good results for the rest of the season,Sybille will go home and take care of her child.:p

I think we all have this on our mind but I'll ask it first - when will the draws be released for the next tournament

Sacha is very happy to have just made it to the final, especially after being down 4-6 6-6 against Tamira Paszek earlier in the tournament :)

I cant remember, I worked it out for the semis then deleted the file. I remember that if I made the final (which I did) then I'm guaranteed to be 3rd, but if I lost in the semis and Maria K won the final then I would be 4th. Because I made the final I'm 3rd and I think your 4th

Yea Thomas runs the game quite well, he was experienced going into this which is why I think it makes it all that bit more professional

Ive never been in the top 2, high of number 3 in mens and womens but I think I'd rather be third than second anyway

I just thought of an idea

Could we maybe have a Stats Thread full of things like our Head to Head records against players, Most consecutive run of victories etc

I wouldnt mind doing all the Stats, I'd just need access to the old PDFs (from week 1-5) and maybe alil moral support for doing it

But if you are number 2 you would not have to face the number 1 until Final  I am just glad Makiri season is (hopefully ) back on track...

But if I finished the season ranked number two I'd be crying thinking what could have been

If I was number three I would be happy to make the podium

I'm in the progress of doing more stats.. I've got the Head to Head done up to a few weeks ago.. I'm going to do prize money standings, records, that sort of thing, I was actually hoping to work on it this weekend.

That being said, I really would appreciate the help! Maybe after I finished the H2H or even right now, I could e-mail you the excel file and you could just update it each week?? Then e-mail it back after each tournament and I could convert it to PDF... or something!

Thanks :D

Likewise, btw getting a good rep from me is Ultra special because I spend most of my reps badrepping people who think only 50 players have a Ranking

 I can't find the excel sheet anywhere!!! :(

I'm not sure what's wrong... it may be on my other computer..

I only had the women's done, and up through only week 4.. so you could just redo it all, or wait a few days and see if i could find it?

I could just send you a file with the format I want for it... let me know!

Aw thats okay

Could you please send me the file with the format, I might as well do all the weeks (there was less people in the first few weeks anyway). Could you please also point out if any players transferred names (eg started off as Anna K, then changed their name to Jesus Christ)
