View Full Version : Frinton $10k bluepastures Jul 14th, 2002, 09:29 AM I'm on my way to Frinton for the qualifiers. Several of the juniors who were playing in Scotland such as Melanie South are set to play today. Beautiful sunny day. I'll post reports tonight. TheBoiledEgg Jul 14th, 2002, 09:37 AM thanx BP ..... have a good time. lucky you live pretty close by bluepastures Jul 14th, 2002, 04:51 PM Oh dear. A real disappointment today. Only one round of qualifying played today (as opposed to two last Sunday at Felixstowe), with the other to be played tomorrow. Only 27 entrants, so 5 players got byes. Stupidly they put SEVEN matches on at once, with four following straight afterwards. Hence, with a 10:30 start, all the matches had finished by 13:15 However, what did make it worthwhile going, was the first match I watched: Alice MacKenzie (GB: NR) BEAT Sarah Coles (CAN: NR) 6-4, 7-5 After a tight first set, where MacKenzie's somewhat more confident serve, proved the decisive factor, the second set start off extremely badly for Alice. Her concentration seemed to have gone AWOL, as she started making a lot of unforced errors. A third set looked a certainty as Alice slipped to 1-5 down. However, perhaps that gave her the push she needed, as she held her next service game, and started to really impose her power on the Coles serve. MacKenzie won a superb six games in succession, for an impressive win. Rebecca Llewellyn (GB: 1107) BEAT Charlotte Wallace (GB: NR) 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) I was watching this "from afar" as it was on the next court past the MacKenzie match. Llewellyn looked to be some way off her best form. Really this should have been a routine win, but Wallace was giving her a very good match. When she was losing the third set, Llewellyn threw her racquet to the floor in frustration, twice. Danielle Steinberg (ISR: 1118) BEAT Jennifer Holden (GB: NR) 6-0, 6-4. Didn't see much of this one, but from what I did see Steinberg looked a better player than her ranking. Quite physically dominant, she really battered Holden into submission. Holden's four games flattered her. Catherine Gunn (GB: NR) BEAT Megan Emmett (GB: 1194) 6-3, 6-2 Very poor performance from Megan. She lost her cool several times, and had to be warned about her language! She surrendered a potential comeback position in the 2nd set when she was leading 2-0. Apparently, she received a speeding ticket this week too. So not a good week, all in all. Michal Amir (ISR: 1154) BEAT Arabella Martin (GB: NR) 6-1, 6-1 Kirsty McRae (GB: 1215) BEAT Lara Alexander (GB: NR) 6-2, 6-1 Don't know the other scores. I'll try to find them out later. Evgenia Linetskaya, Emilie Trouche, Luisa Cowper, Julie Dawson and Visnja Vuletic all had byes for the 1st round of qualifiers Monica_Rules Jul 14th, 2002, 05:02 PM Good to see Alice winning! Rebecca three sets:eek: Thank god she won! bluepastures Jul 14th, 2002, 05:07 PM Oh BTW, in contrast to my earlier post, no sign of Melanie South in the qualifying draw. Racheal Porsz (GB: NR) won the first set against the improbably named Angel Rock (GB: NR) 6-0. I'm 99% sure she won the match too, but don't know what score in the second set. Also Linetskaya is by about 220 places, the highest ranked player in the qualifiers. I suspect she must have entered too late to get in the main draw. TheBoiledEgg Jul 14th, 2002, 05:35 PM go Zhenya :) she should and better qualify bluepastures Jul 14th, 2002, 10:02 PM I really can't see Evgenia having any trouble qualifying. All she's got to do is beat the winner of the Holly McKee/ Yee Wong match, and I just can't see either of them causing her problems. Does anyone know anything about her? Evgenia, I would have expected her to beat Luisa, but not by that margin! She's got to have a reasonable chance against Brianti tomorrow. spiceboy Jul 17th, 2002, 11:09 PM Michelle Gerards was rated as one of the most promising junior players in Europe in the last years and has been member of the Sanex Team, a junior team sponsored by Sanex that included european players like Marta Marrero  , Danilidou, Schaul, Collin, Werner or Julia Gandia  She even got 2 WC in WTA events (Knokke 99 and Antwerp 00) but lost in 1st round to Marrero and Montolio. I think she's been clearly over- rated and she will be happy if she reaches top 100. bluepastures Jul 17th, 2002, 11:28 PM Thanks Spiceboy, I didn't know she was that good as a junior! I guess some players who are really strong juniors never really progress at senior level. TheBoiledEgg Jul 18th, 2002, 04:08 AM Michelle was really touted for something big a few years ago but nothing has happened, doesn't help if you only play 3-4 ITF events a year. TS Jul 18th, 2002, 04:24 AM Christina :D Nicole :) Evgenia :) Christina can win this, as she is in hot form! Move up those ranks girl!!! Etzel (GER) BEAT Carly Homewood 6-2, 6-3 Alice MacKenzie BEAT Frances Hendry 6-2, 6-2 Melissa Berry BEAT Rachel Porsz 6-0, 6-0 DutchieGirl Jul 19th, 2002, 04:12 AM Hey spiceboy... Michelle has been injured, hence the lack of movement up the rankings so far. She is still only 18 (possibly 19). And sshe has only played a couple of tourneys so far this year! So I don't think we can find out if she's been over-rated yet, because of injury! DutchieGirl Jul 19th, 2002, 04:18 AM oh yeah and... Michelle is actually ranked this week. 895 with 5.75 points from 3 tourneys! So in a couple of weeks she'll move up a bit! :D TS Jul 19th, 2002, 05:17 AM Christina  Evgenia :( Now go and win it Nicole!! For anyone going tomorrow, be warned! The Collin-Brianti final starts at 10:15 (!!) on court 1, with the Llewellyn-Berry match following the men's British tour final on court 5. spiceboy Jul 20th, 2002, 03:53 PM Final result Alberta Brianti (3) def. Hannah Collin (2) 7/5 3/6 6/2 Congrats Alberta :) Hannah  bluepastures Jul 20th, 2002, 03:54 PM $10k Final: Alberta Brianti (ITA: 450) BEAT Hannah Collin (GB: 400) 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 1st set: Brianti made a bright start, breaking Collin's second service game to take an early lead 2-1. Collin looked to be improving in terms of coping with Brianti's powerful serve, as she broke back a couple of games later to 3-3. However, Collin produced a terrible service game next, spraying shots all the place,as she was broken again to give Brianti a 4-3 lead. Brianti never looked in danger of losing her serve again in this set as she strolled to a 7-5 set. 2nd set: Hannah started the second set much more brightly, breaking Brianti's first service game (helped by a couple of double-faults). Brianti was clearly getting frustrated at this point and threw her racquet to the floor twice. Collin's serve, while never powerful, did prove accurate enough to avoid any breaks in this set. By the time, I was watching two matches at once (Llewellyn-Berry: see below) due to their stupid scheduling 3rd set: I always had the impression in this match, that if both players were at their best, Brianti would win (yes, I know that contrasts with the world rankings). It looked as if I would be proved wrong as Collin broke Brianti to make it 0-1, not helped by Brianti refusing to play safe on her second serve. However three games later, Collin's lack of matches in recent months started to show, as her service action started to look somewhat ragged. Her mobility which is usually a strength was looking weak. Brianti broke to make it 2-2, and from then on Collin seemed to lose heart and Brianti won four very quick games for the match. British Tour final: Rebecca Llewellyn (GB: 1107) BEAT Melissa Berry (GB: 554) 6-2, 6-4 A flattering score for Berry. Llewellyn turned the rankings upside down, as she played some terrific tennis. If she plays consistently like this, I'm sure she can move much further up the rankings. As for Berry, I do wonder, if she's probably reached as high as she's ever going to. She lacks real weapons, and whenever I've seen her play she seems to lose heart very quickly. I think this is Llewellyn's first British tour win, so congratulations to her. :bounce: TheBoiledEgg Jul 20th, 2002, 03:56 PM Hannah  :( oh at least Zhenya didn't lose to a complete dud, makes it a little better kournikovafan13 Jul 20th, 2002, 03:57 PM Hannah:sad::mad: Baltacha Fan Jul 21st, 2002, 07:44 PM Hannah Collin is now hitting form. Even though she lost her first round at wimbledon, i read a lot of good articles in the press from her play. Good luck Hannah and keep up the good form bluepastures Jul 21st, 2002, 10:37 PM And bizarrely, Hannah Collin appeared quite a lot in that "fly on the wall" documentary about Eastbourne aired on ITV meridian today, even though she only played in the "Eastbourne Cup" after failing to get a wild-card into the main draw. I just think Hannah's probably got the necessary ability to move up in the rankings, but she needs to add a bit more muscle to her play, ESPECIALLY her serve. Monica_Rules Jul 21st, 2002, 10:40 PM Well done Rebecca:D |
