Rodionova Wins Kirilenko,into Quarterfinals

Last week's Eastbourne title winner Anastassia Rodionova reaches quarterfinal in Wimbledon after defeating compatriot Maria Kirilenko 5-7,7-5,6-3 in the second round.

Rodionova,who won her first round here by defeating Venus Williams 4-6,6-3,7-5,faced Kirilenko for the second consecutive time this season.She won her last week in three sets and this time was also no difference.

Both were pretty shaky in the beginning of the first set,especially Rodionova who was still trying to get her rhythm in the match.As a result,Kirilenko set up a 5-3 lead and had a couple of match points.Rodionova was as gutsy as usual,saving both points and levelled the match.However,that didn't help her much as Kirilenko broke her serve once again and claim the set 7-5.

It was much better tennis in the second set as both players were playing some fantastic points.Both were pretty even in the set until the last game where Kirilenko double faulted and handed the #6 seed the second set.

It was down to the decisive set where both players became nervous and piled up their unforced errors.But Rodionova was the first one to step up her game and lead the set 4-2.Kirilenko was trying hard to fight back when she was down 3-5,and was having three break points when the Roland Garros champion was serving for the match.But that didn't deter Rodionova from closing out the match after just over two hours on Centre Court with a stinging forehand winner down the line.

"Well,I thought I played my best today.Although I played a pretty horrible first set,I think I also did hit some good shots in the match.It was definitely a different match compared to our previous encounter.She tried to stay agrresive while waiting for me to make mistakes.Luckily I didn't let her do so.I was very wary of her making some drop shots at times.But she somehow fell apart in the last set where she made some silly mistakes and I just took my chances and I won."replied Rodionova after her match.

With that victory,she has set up a quarterfinal clash against another Russian but this time her opponent is definitely not an easy one,namely Elena Dementieva,who is the current Australian champion and the second seed of the tournament.

"It's such a shame that we have to face so early in the event.This could possibly be the final of the tournament!It's all the Tour Director's fault,obviously(laughed).But for me,I'll not complain too much.Perhaps it's a good sign for me since I have won Dementieva recently(smiled).We have known each other very well,and I believe she has her numbers on me.So I just hope we'll play another great match and hopefully the winner of this match will win Wimbledon later!":devil:
