Davenport Wins First Career Title in Birmingham

After a disappointing clay season,Lindsay Davenport was hoping for a good start on grass,which is her favourite surface besides hard courts.And it was a dream come true for the American who has won her first ever title on tour by defeating Agnes Szavay 7-6(2),6-4 in the final at Birmingham.

She has won four straight matches en route to claim her first trophy.She had won second seeded compatriot,Ashley Harkleroad 6-2,6-0 in the first round.She then met grass court specialist Anne Keothavong and eliminated her in three sets 6-2,0-6,6-3.Next up,she faced #3 ranked Serbian Jelena Jankovic and eventually gave her opponent a double bagel before reaching the final.

"It is really a great week for me.I won some pretty easy matches which has shown that I love grass so much.I even had given a double bagel to Jelena in the previous round!That was my best play so far on the tour against a seeded player.Agnes was also a very good player and our match was very tight as you can see from the scoreline.But I kinda have some fuel left on my tank after that tiebreak.So I managed to win it."replied Davenport on her performance in Birmingham.

"I was pretty pumped up for the grass season after all the horrible performances on clay.Berlin,Charleston,Paris or whatever,all were poor performances.I know I wouldn't do well there.So instead I practised on grass courts even during the clay season.And so it somehow paid off.I'm glad about it now."said the tall American about her play so far on the tour.She didn't win even one match on clay.

However,she did win the most doubles titles on the tour right now with her partner,with a record of 6 doubles titles,including two on clay.And she and Mashona are the leading doubles player on tour at the moment."(laugh)Well,I kinda feel better when talking about doubles.Mashona and I are great partners,and we have a good combination together to play doubles.So that's the main reason why we are pretty successful in it.But unfortunately,Mashona had injured herself in Roland Garros.So she won't be able to play for quite some time.Luckily,I found Alicia Molik and she agreed to play with me.So we'll see how good are we getting together."

The American debuted on the last season's Hasselt indoor tournament with a final and had some pretty good results on hardcourts earlier in the season,with one final in Miami and several semifinals on other events.She was ranked #6 in the singles race with those performances but after the clay season,she dropped to #18 in the race."Ugh,just pathetic!It sucks.My aim for this season is to win titles and play the YEC.But well,seems like it will be a tough task for me now.Hopefully I will win more titles and boost my rankings."
