Mary defintely gives our first world number one a challenge, taking her to a cointoss, but could not control her own 5 set points, Mary is a one to watch out for, she has major potential, she is new and fresh, so get ready for her. It is hard to see Jelena unseeded when she used to be the top ranked woman in the world, she had her sturggles, and now continues to get little wins and soon enough her confidence will be there once again. Congrats to both players on a fantastic match. :yeah:

Tokyo, JAPAN--This year's Toray Pan Pacific Open had some mouthwatering encounters early. Elena Dementieva and Silvia Farina Elia was an instant classic, as was Brie Whitehead's upset over sixth seeded Anna Chakvetadze. But none was more of a tantilizing match up than Jennifer Capriati, the seventh seed, and Venus Williams. Jennifer and Venus both have game styles that could trouble the other and rookie Williams showed her big time potential today, pushing Capriati to a 6/2, 1/6, 7/5 victory.

"It was outstanding," Capriati smiled after meeting with the Japanese media on court. "Venus was playing outstanding tennis and I had to really raise my game to beat her. I would not be standing here if I couldn't do that, and all credit to Venus for the great play."

Venus Williams certainly looks to have a bright future, trouncing Gold Coast finalist Capriati. Jennifer also commented that it was probably her ranking that protected her in this round.

Maria advacnes barely. the AO Sf, defitnely gave her confidence. But, Dominika is a dark loomer in every tournament, she always sends new points, but the draw she gets is very dismal, always drawing a high seed in an early round, she should be ranked much higher, I jsut love Dominika's commitment and her style of play, but could use some changes, congrats Masha!
