Women's Preview

The Favorites:

Amelie Mauresmo [3]
http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2006/01/26/svMAURESMO2_narrowweb__300x307,0.jpg
The biggest favorite to win the tournament coming in is 3rd seed Amelie Mauresmo. She has won 2 consecutive tournaments, and has a record so far this year of 9-2! The only problem with Mauresmo: her draw. She has both "bagel queens", Paszek and Jones, in her quarter of the draw. The good news: like Bammer, the only 2 players to have beaten Mauresmo are in the other half of the draw.

Sybille Bammer [1]
http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2007/01/17/wbOPEN2bammer_gallery__470x347.jpg
Although she hasn't won a title since week #1, she is still the top seed! She seemed to turn things around a little bit last week, making the final of Hobart. With an 8-3 record, Sybille is definitely one of the favorites here in Melbourne! With a first round bye, she'll move into the 2nd round and have a relatively easy match against one of the 2 21st ranked players. In the quarters though, she'll play Samantha Stosur, a very tough 8th seed, and then from their, if things work out, she'll play either Maria Kirilenko or Anna Chakvetadze. One big thing going for Bammer: the 3 players that have beaten her are all in the lower half!

Daniela Hantuchova [2]
http://danielahantuchova.ewestpost.com/pictures/danielahantuchovamariasharapovafourthroundaustrali anopen.jpg
Although not a big favorite, the 2nd seeded Daniela Hantuchova comes into this tournament with a 7-4 record, a runner-up trophy, and 2 other trips to the semis. Although her draw is not an easy one, Hantuchova has shown to be a fighter, winning 6 3-set matches so far this year! She'll take on (potentially) Edina Gallovits in the 2nd round, with either Davenport or Safarova waiting in the quarters.

The Dark Horses:

Tamira Paszek
http://www.oe24.at/zeitung/multimedia/archive/00098/paszek_98688e.jpg
A potential deep-run-upset player, Tamira Paszek comes into the tournament unseeded but looking to win! Aside from Mauresmo and Bammer, Paszek is the only player to win a title this year, winning the Tier III ASB Classic. Although she'll play the 3rd seed Mauresmo in the 2nd round, if Mauresmo lets Paszek play her game it could be a very good match. Coming in with a 7-2 record, Paszek is anything but a walkover win!

Sacha Jones [6]
http://media.apn.co.nz/webcontent/image/jpg/30SachaJones.JPG
There have been only 5 players to make a final this year, and Sacha Jones is one of them! Coming in as the 6th seed, she is not expected to win the tournament but she could deifnitely make a deep wrong, and potentially pull of a shocker! She's got a rather easy draw with unranked Dementieva in the first round, but if she should make the quarters she'd be up against the favorite, Amelie Mauresmo.

Lucie Safarova
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42483000/jpg/_42483041_safarova300.jpg
Although Safarova is yet to make it past the semifinal, she comes in with an 8-3 record and is one of only 3 players to beat the top seed! Lucie has beaten 3 of the 8 seeds here, including the 6th seed Sacha Jones and the 4th seed Maria Kirilenko! Safarova has a very tough first round though against 7th seed Lindsay Davenport, and if she wins that she'll still have to face Nicole Vaidisova. In the quarters she'll play Daniela Hantuchova. This may be the toughest draw any player will have to follow, but if any player has potential to do it it's Safarova!

WMFT: Australian Open
Mens's Preview

The Favorites:

Nathan Healey [1]
http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2006/01/22/healey,0.jpg
The favorite to win coming in, Healey is the #1 seed and winner of the first 2 ATP events. With a record of 10-2, Nathan has a better record than any other WMFT player, male or female! His draw is tough though, with a tough Roddick/Koellerer 2nd round and then Bjorkman, or possibly Volandri, in the quarters.

Ivan Ljubicic [2]
http://cimg2.163.com/sports/2006/10/16/20061016215912a27ee.jpg
The 2nd seed coming in, Ljubicic is one of the other 2 players to have won a title so far this year. With 2 quarterfinal and 1 semifinal in the other tournaments, Ljubicic has a 9-3 record. The bad news: he is 0-2 against Healey this year. Like the top seed, Ljubicic has a rather tough draw, with a potential quarterfinal match-up with last week's final Safin, and a semifinal match up with either the 3 seed, Baghdatis, or the only other player to beat him: Davydenko.

Nikolay Davydenko [6]
http://www.iran-daily.com/1385/2646/html/058632.jpg
Although Davydenko had a tough start to the year, losing in the quarterfinals of his first 2 events and the 1st round of his 3rd, he is one of the only 3 players with a title. Last week, unseeded, Davydenko fought his way (with 5 three-set wins) to the title, taking out the top 3 seeds along the way. This has earned him a 6th seed here, but unfortunately it also put him in the same quarter as 2 time semifinalist and 1 time finalist Marcos Baghdatis. His 1st and 2nd rounds, however, look to be relatively easy match-ups.

The Dark Horses:

Marat Safin
http://handson.provocateuse.com/images/photos/marat_safin_05.jpg
As the runner-up from last week, it's tough to exclude Marat Safin from the dark horse list. Unseeded and and with only win, Safin was the last player you'd expect to make a run to the finals, but he did it and he beat the top seed Healey along the way. With a tough draw of 7th seed Chela in round 1 and 2nd seed Ljubicic in the quarters, Safin will have to be on his game for the 2nd week in a row to make a deep run here. Although no one expects him to repeat what he did last week, he's definitely got the potential to pull of an upset... or 2!

Filippo Volandri
http://www.infotennis.com/joueurs/images/volandri.jpg
The only player other than Safin to beat Nathan Healey: Filippo Volandri. Although he only made the semifinals once, it was of a Tier II tournament. His draw is very tough, however, with 8th seed Bjorkman in the 1st round and top seed Healey in the quarters. Although I wouldn't expect Volandri to make a run past the semis, he could definitely deliver a 3rd loss to Healey and shake up the draw a little bit.

Fernando Verdasco
http://estaticos03.cache.el-mundo.net/elmundodeporte/especiales/2006/10/mastersmadrid/jugadores/img/verdasco_reuters.jpg
Another semifinalist from Sydney, Verdasco is my 3rd and final dark horse, and he's definitely my favorite! After beating the 2nd seed Ljubicic last week, he will get him again in the 2nd round. Verdasco is definitely a player that could make a deep run, maybe even to the final, and with Chela as the other seed in his quarter he may have the draw to do it. Although he's inexperienced and his record is only 3-2, he would definitely be my pick to upset a top seed!

My Predicted Draw:
(these are just my predictions, before doing any results or seeing any points.)

1st Round:
N.Healey [1] def. Bye
A.Roddick def. D.Koellerer
H.Radford def. A.Roddick

L.Hewitt def. N.Djokovic
R.Nadal [4] def. M.Cilic
M.Baghdatis [3] def. Bye
P.Srichaphan def. D.Nalbandian
Y.Lu def. T.Berdych
N.Davydenko [6] def. M.Ancic

Sacha prepares for Australian Open

Sacha Jones has decided to play at the Australian Open, despite her poor performance last week. She doesn't go into the Australian Open as she would have liked, however shes hoping to steamroll the Championship not loosing a set or even a game. She will be the 6th seed and faces a big unknown test in the first round against a player who she has never seen play before - last time she met a rookie player she won 6-0 6-0 and shes certainly aiming for a result like that again. It doesnt really get any easier from there either. If Sacha makes it to the quarterfinals then shes simply hoping to get some revenge on Amelie Mauresmo - One of Sachas fans said that he would strip down to his undies if she won that match 6-0 6-0.

Sacha says to her fans 'Dont expect me to win any matches here, but if I do then expect them to be over in 20 or so minutes' - Good luck Sacha from all her fans back here in New Zealand.

Harley Radford prepares for Australian Open

Harley was seen buying some speedoes today - thats a bad sign ahead of the Australian Open. Harley hasnt exactly had a great start to the season, his highlight would have to be taking number one ranked Nathan Healey to three sets last week. He's got a bet with fellow hunks Brydan Klein and Andy Roddick that the player who goes the least far in this tournament will have to clean the winners car in nothing but some light blue speedoes. Harley's actually favourite to win his first round match against Andre Agassi but his 2nd round opponent will likely be Jonas Bjorkman and well things dont look good there for Harley.

Good luck to Harley, he knows that he had to do better here than in any previous tournament

http://www.promi-media.de/tennisgalerien/likhovtseva/images/IMG_9842.jpghttp://img2.menstennisforums.com/584/IMG_7080_Kopie.jpg

Elena Likhovtseva said on her arrival in Melbourne 'So far I havent found my A game on the tour but I started late and this is my first surface, not that I am makign excuses but I have had some close loses and that has made me more determined to win more matches here at the Australian Open. I cant wait to get started!'

Fernando Verdasco also stated 'I have had a decent start to the tour reaching a semi final but this is the big one. My game doesnt really suit the high bouncing courts here in Australia but if I can play to my full potential I know I can cause a few shocks. I am in a tough section of the draw but am feeling confident'

Mauresmo and Nadal Arrive in Melbourne.

http://www.insidesocal.com/outinhollywood/aaaaaaarafa1.jpg

Amelie Mauresmo, third seed, is the favourite to win the opening Grand Slam of the WMFT while Rafael Nadal, fourth seed, is deemed by most to have an outside chance, given a kind draw. They both have something in common; they are coached by the same coach and they are also hitting partners.

Mauresmo says of Nadal: "He is a great athlete, a great player and a great person. The way he strikes a ball is phenomenal, you know, but I also love his dedication and drive for every last point. I don't think he has ever lost a three set match, until last week where he was experimenting, and that is just an ode to his mental toughness. Plus I would simply love to have those biceps:hearts:"

http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2006/01/28/wbTENNISmauresmo_narrowweb__300x398,0.jpg

Nadal is also complimentary when it comes to talking about his hitting partner: "Si, she is superb athlete, no? Superb, err, champion, no? She win two title in row. That is good. I watch her last week and she beat all the top player, with volley and, err, slice and lots of variety. She is fun to watch, no? She has good chance, she is favourite, for sure..."

http://www.tribuneindia.com/2005/20050601/sp6.jpg

The WMFT Australian Open is due to commence tomorrow; it is a wide open field with several dangerous floaters in the draw. Mauresmo is very well aware of who they are:

"Elena Likhovtseva is one to watch, I assure you. I think she will upset Sacha and get through to play me, well hopefully, in the Quarter Final. I expect big things from her here, you know, she has mentioned to me personally a couple of times that she aims to peak at the Slams. I just hope I haven't done the opposite and peaked too early."

Lucie, you fought hard. Davenport was just too strong.

Tomas...I KNEW I SHOULDN'T HAVE CHANGED ANYTHING.

Lucie's points were the best points I've made in any game, and they got me a quarter two semis, and a loss to Davenport. Great job, Lindsay.

Harley Radford wins Round 1

Harley Radford has won his first round match of the maiden Australian Open, but things certainly didn't all go to plan. Harley started off very well and raced ahead to a 4-2 lead. Andre picked up his game towards the end of the set but it was never going to be enough and Harley picked up the first set 6 games to 3.

At the break Harley smiled, took a look around the crowd and then seemed to get a nightmare image. His playing partner Sacha Jones was in the match, and she was far from happy - he could only guess that she lost her match and well he was right about that. Harley played poorly throughout the second set, having Sacha Jones in the crowd must have really left a dent in his spine and this made his game very weak. Andre won the second set 6 games to a miserably solitary game.

Something very unsuspecting happened at half time. Leanne Baker came to sit near Harley's box, and to the surprise of everyone Sacha Jones went over there and started a cat fight. It was quite entertaining, Sacha Jones seems to have lost the fight but the crowd was definately on her side. Oh thats right im getting off track.

Well there was a lengthy delay because of this and both girls were kicked out of the stadium (thankfully theirs no doubles here as Sachas been banned for the whole season from RLA). This seemed to help Harley and he came from an early break down to clean up the set 6 games to 3 and win the match to the delight of the crowd.

I always thought that Americans got behind their players?
Andre is American so why didn't the crowd get behind him?
Would have Sacha beaten Leanne if the catfight had have continued?
We will just never know....

Harley Radford is versing Volandri next - he isnt expecting to win, infact hes already booked his tickets for next week (if he wins then he's going to have to busk to be able to afford the accomodation)

Pair Out in Second Round
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k89/xXxPosterGirlxXx/JANKO2-1.jpghttp://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k89/xXxPosterGirlxXx/JANKO-1.jpg

Melbourne, AUSTRALIA-- Anna Chakvetadze and Janko Tipsarevic are both out of the first Grand Slam of the year. The loved up pair both lost in the second round on Wednesday. Number five seed Anna Chakvetadze lost to Cravero in two tight sets 75 76. “It was a very tight match, both of us were playing very well. She took her chances at the end of the sets and I didn’t so that’s the main down point of this. I set out at the start of the year to be a Top 8 seed for the Aussie Open, and I achieved it. That is my main up point from this tournament. I also won my first round match, my first Grand Slam win. So there is some positives, but also some negatives. I should have won this match, I had the chances but didn’t take them.”

Janko Tipsarevic has had an OK Rebound Ace season, winning a few matches including his first round win here. But this is not his favourite surface and he knows that he has better chances through out the year and the best is yet to come. “I’m glad I got a win here. This isn’t my favourite surface and to win a round is great. In the first round I beat Robin Soderling, who is a good consistant player, so I was happy with the win. I knew James would be a tough opponent, and he showed his talent through out the match. I’m still happy with this tournament. I know Anna is a bit upset after losing, she is very good on this surface and I’m sure she could have went far in this tournament and even won it. But she is a great player, and she will come back fighting the rest of the season.”

Harley Radford wins..again

Harley Radfords match was delayed this morning. This time it was the referee that had a catfight with one of the ball boys, oh the joys of tennis.

Todays match had far less twists and turns than yesterdays match so I'm going to fit it all into one paragraph. Harley Radford started off extremely well, winning the first set 6 games to well no games. This was getting very boring so Harley decided to put a polarfleece and pants on. The weather quickly changed (call it Global Warming maybe) and Harley got thrashed in the second set without scoring a single game. It wasn't til he was 4-0 down in the third when he thought that maybe it was the pants and polarfleece slowing him down, so he took these off (along with his tshirt) and then with the crowd support he won the next 6 games to win the deciding set 6 games to 4.

Harley was expected to verse the top seed next, but somehow Nathan lost in three sets to Andy Roddick :tape:

Mauresmo Maintains Winning Streak;
Two Steps Away From Grand Slam Trophy.

http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2006/01/28/wbTENNISmauresmo_narrowweb__300x398,0.jpg

Amelie Mauresmo stretched her unbeaten run to 12 matches with a composed performance against Elena Dementieva; she eventually prevailed 7-5, 6-4 in a hard-fought battle on the Rod Laver Arena. The Frenchwoman has been tipped as the favourite to win the title here in Melbourne and she now stands only two matches away from fulfilling her dream and winning a Grand Slam in her first attempt.

"It was a very high quality match, I thought. She was slow to start in both sets and that cost her in the end. She came firing back but I had what it took to stay with her, holding my serve with some timely volleys, and then I had the mental edge to close it out. I am pleased with my performances here; they have been very, very competent...they have lacked any drama or tension which, for now, is how I like things."

Tomorrow's Semi-Final clash with World Number #2 Daniela Hantuchova promises to be different though; drama is almost guarenteed. The pair met last week at the same stage and Mauresmo only just prevailed in a tense, but nevertheless high quality, marathon match that was concluded with an emphatic third-set tiebreak performance from Mauresmo. Amelie remembers the match with concern:

"That was a tough, tough match last week that we had. I have no doubt she will be even more ready to take me on aswell, so it is going to be even harder. I feel I am on the top of my game right now though so I don't see why I can't repeat last week's result. It will be a battle, that is for sure, but I am prepared to fight for this; I would say I want it more than any other player. I intend to win the first Grand Slam of the year; extend my winning streak to three consecutive tournaments and reach number one in the world."

Not asking for much, then?

Mauresmo to Contest Grand Slam Final with World #1;
Out-Battles Hantuchova in tense, three-setter.

Amelie Mauresmo today ensured that she remained on course to fulfill her lifelong ambition of winning a Grand Slam title by defeating World #2 Daniela Hantuchova in a hardfought battle. The Frenchwoman, who is unbeaten in three events, will now have to do battle with the world's best player in the form of Sybille Bammer to decide who will be the first Grand Slam champion in WMFT History; who will be the number one player in the world; who will cement their place in the archives of the game. Who will win? It is anyone's guess. Mauresmo beat Bammer recently in a tour Final but Bammer isn't the number one for nothing; she will have worked on her game and has been demolishing opponents throughout the whole week.

"It was a great match," said Mauresmo, "I felt I played well in the tight moments. In the first set she was able to retrieve everything I through at her but after that I upped my game slightly and I had what it took to oust her. I am thrilled to be in a Grand Slam Final but I amonly here to win; a runner-up means little. I want this trophy, it means everything to me.

I am totally aware of how tough Bammer will be though and I am prepared to fight, as I demonstrated today."

They are, undoubtedly, the two best players thus far this season and it is a testament to both players that they have produced their best tennis at the biggest tournament of the season so far. One thing is for certain: it will be a superb encounter with tennis of the highest quality.

Harley Radfords Fairytale Run!

Harley Radford came into the Australian Open with just one win under his belt. Hes won four straight matches here to advance through to the final. But its not the first time that kittyking has created a fairytale.

Just a few weeks ago Sacha Jones went from very poor form to make it to a final.

Harley Radford wont win the final, but he's had alot of fun playing here anyway :)

Amelie Fulfills Dream; Wins Grand Slam Title.

http://images.sportsnetwork.com/tennis/getty/women/mauresmo/2006/ausopen_trophy.jpg

Amelie Mauresmo ousted Sybille Bammer in the Final of the Australian Open, the inaugral Grand Slam of the WMFT, which means her place in history is cemented and also, incidentally, she is likely to become the new world number one. Mauresmo and Bammer had both enjoyed realtively easy paths to the Final and have, undoubtedly, been the two best players of the season so far. Bammer has been the world number one since week one and has won one title with a number of Finals. Meanwhile, after a slow start to the season, Mauresmo has been unstoppable. She has won three tournaments in a row culminating in this amazing feat at the first Grand Slam of the year.

After Bammer had waltzed through to the Final completely untested some thought she had a chance of stopping the insurmountable Mauresmo and this seemed confirmed as Bammer played absolutely amazing tennis to take the first set 6-3. Cue Mauresmo's fighting spirit. She dug deep, raised her level and served and volleyed often to take the next two sets, with it the match and the trophy, 6-4, 6-4. It was a superb match, possibly the highest quality match of the season so far and when Mauresmo fell to the ground to a rapturous applause from the crowd you sensed something special had happened.

http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200601/r70721_196677.jpg

For Mauresmo it all started with a first round win over Elena Likhovtseva a couple of weeks ago. Before that she was 0-2 for the season and since that match she hasn't looked back; defeating everybody who dared to challenge her.

"It all started with that one match. Since then I haven't lost; it is just amazing to think. But all that counts for very little; what is key is that I have won a Grand Slam. A Grand Slam! Something, since I started playing tennis, I have always wanted to do. And to be the first one to do so makes it that much more special.

Sybille played a very good match and I would like to thank her for being such a great player, person and, above all, a great champion. I am sure we will have many, many more matches in the future and a great rivalry. I just hope I can pinch that number one off her when the rankings are released! I don't think anyone, even Sybille, would contest that I don't deserve it; I do. I am the best player in the world right now, no arguments."

Allez!
