Maria Sharapova
Maria claimed the Sydney title and proved she is a force on this tour and grabs the 15 extra points to help her win the Australian Open!

Kevin. Aug 12th, 2007, 05:43 PM Preview
The Pro Tour's first grand slam of the season is in Melbourne, Australia home to the Australian Open. Here Maria Sharapova,is the recent Sydney champion, world number 1 and top seed at this prestigous event, but can Sydney finalist and second seeded Elena Dementieva pull off some amazing upsets to claim the title. Or will dark horses Serena Williams and Nicole Vaidisova prove to win. Here is what the draw will be like.
First Round: Top Half
(1)Maria Sharapova has a bye
Samantha Stosur vs. Tamira Paszek
Both have not shown any signs on the tour, if they commit who knows what can happen. Toss-up
(6)Maria Kirilenko vs. (WC)Brie Whitehead
Maria has already shown she can bring it on when she can, and Brie is starting out her with a late-minute wildcard, but can she leave her bagels behind and pull off an amazing upset? My Pick: Kirilenko in two
Na Li vs. Amelie Mauresmo
Na Li had a great week in Gold Coast and a tough 3 tiebreak up and down battle loss to Nicole Vaidisova in her first match in Sydney, Amelie has show signs of potential but got destryoyed by newcomer Vera Zvonareva last week. My Pick: Na Li in three
(8)Margalita Chakhnashvili vs. Patty Schynder
Margalita made her court debut in Syndey and produced a fine win over Jennifer Capriati to make it to the quarterfinals, she is defitnely showing commitment and potential. This is Patty's first week, but can she bring it? My Pick: Margalita Chakhnashvili in Two Sets
Mary Pierce vs. Daniela Hantuchova
Anxiosuly awaiting for the debut of both these players.
My Pick: Toss-up
Silvia Farina-Elia vs. Venus Williams
Venus garnered up a win but fell completely flat against sister Serena in Sydney, she has what it takes, but needs work. This is Silvia's debut. My Pick: V.Williams in Three
(3)Serena Williams has a bye
Kevin. Aug 12th, 2007, 05:57 PM Bottom Half First Round
(4)Nicole Vaidisova has a bye
Anna Chakvetdaze vs. Elena Baltacha
Anna grabed a huge win over no.1 Jankovic in Sydney in her first career match, and she defitnely has the potential to be a threat in tournaments, not a good starting out for Elena. My Pick: Anna Chakvetdaze in Two
(7)Tathiana Garbin vs. Dominika Cibulkova
This will be THE MATCH of the first round, Tathiana was a finalist at Gold Coast and Dominika is a consistent player already, I am looking very forward to it. Dominika's consistency could give her the match. Live scoring a def. for this match. My Pick: Dominika Cibulkova in Three tight sets.
Martina Hingis vs. Jennifer Capriati
J-Cap is a committed but inconsistent player, after making the SF in Gold Coast she then lost in a heart filled battle to Chakhnashivili in her opening match in Sydney. Her inconsistency could give Martina, who is making her debut, the match. My Pick: Jennifer Capria
ti in Three Sets.
Alona Bondarenko vs. Flavia Pennetta
Alona was the first person to join the tour, but both are showing lack of commitment, Alona had a good showing in Gold Coast, but Flavia hasnt shown any potential yet, could this be her breakthrough? My pick: Alona Bondarenko in Three Sets.
(5)Jelena Jankovic has a bye
Vera Zvoanreva vs. Sania Mirza
Vera had a great debut in Sydney, losing the least amount of games to defeat someone in Tour history, losing only 4 to Amelie Mauresmo, this is Sania's debut, but I like her commitment, if she takes my advice, she could go far. My Pick: Sania in Three Sets
(2)Elena Dementieva has a bye
My Picks for the title:
SF:
Maria Sharapova (1) vs. Serena Williams (3)
Nicole Vaidisova (4) vs. Elena Dementieva (2)
F:
Maria Sharapova (1) vs. Nicole Vaidisova (4)
Champion:
Maria Sharapova (1)
Kevin. Aug 12th, 2007, 07:44 PM (WC)Whitehead to face (6)Kirilenko

"I am very happy that I may be here. This is my first Grand Slam and I would like to do well. Australia one of my favourite countries, and on a last week, on my first professional tournament, I reached in the final, where I lost to Sharapova in two tight sets."
There is intense heat in Australia, so the players can traning only in the morning and in the evening.
"I like Melbourne, so I am not bored if there is not a game, or we can't be training. I like to be in the downtown, to buy, to have an ice cream and to sunbathe in the park."
The Russian player will be second seed, so she don't has to play in the first round.
"I'll play doubles too with Czech Nicole Vaidisova. She's 4th seed in single, so I hope we'll have a good results."

Good match from the Indian-Frence duo, especially in the first set, Mirza's super forehand and Mary's super defence made Kriz/Baker nothinh to defense, but Sania and Mary start to have some unfored urrors in the 2nd set, but at last they overcame and win the match. Good match.

Good match from the Williams sisters, they use their power game and good volley to beat Jelena and Vania, and everyone want to know how many aces do they fire today, they fired 16 aces, so they won this match under pressure, their serve make the oppoments nothing to defense and they made less unfored urrors, so exellent performence from the Williams sisters.

Solid performence from Anna and Jennifer, Jennifer use her powerful forehand and Anna use her smart play and good volley. They made the Australian duo nothing to defense. And they also serve well and made less unforced errors. The Australian hate them very much because they beat their team. But they still have Rennae's team. Good match from Annifer.

The Solovakian/Geogian duo have too many unfored errors in the 1st set, it made the Australian very happy, because they can took a set. But they recover very well in the second and third set. They serve and volley and defense well. Dominika serve very well, serve less doubles faults today. Good and exciting match from Dominika and Margalita.

What a match, Alona and Jelena should change their gameplan against this excellent team. They use their whole power in the 1st and took the first. And they have matchpoints when they leading 5-1. At last, Tamira and Elena fight back and took the 2nd set. This is fascinating. Tamira's backhand and Elena's volley start to work in the 3rd. Alona and Jelena are shocked after the match. This is the match of the day. Great job, Elena and Tamira.

Tathiana Garbin/Flavia Pennetta d. (PC)Renata Voracova/Lucie Hradecka 5-7 6-2 10-2
Good job from the Italian, they use their good volley to beat the super defense Czech team. And they also move well, Renata's angle shot seem didn't have any advantanges. Good match.

http://images.tsn.ca/images/stories/20051003/Bondarenko_41768.jpg
Alona Bondarenko def. Flavia Pennetta 6-3,3-6,7-6(0)
Alona played a very striaght-forward match atacking Flavia's plan. Flavia didn't send new points which really hurted her. Congrats Alona!
Kevin. Aug 18th, 2007, 04:34 PM (5)Jelena Jankovic vs. (WC)Michaella Kraijeck
http://rs.warehousesports.com/tw/img/jankovicblog.jpg
(5)Jelena Jankovic def. (WC)Michaella Kraijeck 3-6,6-4,7-5
What a debut from Michaella! Very impressive. Jelena has finally gotten a win since her loss of the number one ranking. She really got lucky today though, and she advances to the round of 16.
Kevin. Aug 18th, 2007, 04:37 PM Vera Zvonareva vs. Sania Mirza
http://sports.indiainfo.com/2007/01/17/images/sania.jpg
Sania Mirza def. Vera Zvonareva 6-4,7-6(6)*
Sania plays a really good match against a good Vera Z. Vera was not completely there with her game plan which really cost her the second set, but Sania got lucky. Congrats Sania!
Kevin. Aug 18th, 2007, 04:40 PM Second round coming up!
Kevin. Aug 18th, 2007, 04:42 PM (1)Maria Sharapova vs. Tamira Paszek

(1)Maria Sharapova def. Tamira Paszek 6-4,6-1
Maria wins her first match as world number one! She was a couple points away from bagelling Tamira. I like Maria's game plan, but her third set is very risky. Tamira's plan is very risky and it showed today, but good debut Tamira!
Kevin. Aug 18th, 2007, 04:44 PM (6)Maria Kirilenko vs. Na Li
http://www.ontennis.com/news/uploaded_images/maria-kirilenko-ausopen-001-722069.jpg
(6)Maria Kirilenko def. Na Li 7-5,6-3
Maria has a really good game plan, I really like it and had a pretty good straight set victory over Na. Na jsut ran into the wrong person today..
Kevin. Aug 18th, 2007, 05:49 PM (8)Margalita Chaknashvili vs. Daniela Hantuchova

(8)Margalita Chaknashvili def. Daniela Hantuchova 0-6,6-2,6-4
What happened to Daniela! Such a great first set then Margalita comes bursting in! What an up and down mathc, but Margalita continues her consistent form into the AO QF!
Kevin. Aug 18th, 2007, 05:52 PM (3)Serena Williams vs. Silvia Farina-Elia
http://www.1asport.de/sport-bilder/serena-williams_72217.jpg
(3)Serena Williams def. Silvia Farina-Elia 7-6(5),6-1
Silvia beat one Williams sister, but couldn't beat the other. She had her chances in the first set, but the consistent Serena brought her A-game on in the second set. s I have done earlier, I praise Serena's consistency, and she is on to face Chaknashivili in the QF.
Kevin. Aug 18th, 2007, 05:56 PM (4)Nicole Vaidisova vs. Anna Chakvetdaze
http://www.protennisfan.com/images/vaidisova.jpg
Anna Chakvetdaze def. (4)Nicole Vaidisova 6-4,6-3
Anna produces another fantastic win a matter of 2 tournaments, number 1 Jankovic in Sydney and now this win over Nicole. I am shocked by the scoreline, Anna didn't send new points, and Nicole did. Very dissapointing performance from Nicole. She could have done alot better with a better set of points.
Kevin. Aug 18th, 2007, 05:59 PM Jennifer Capriati vs. Dominika Cibulkova
http://www.tennis-ontheline.com/pics/01oz/01aojc6.jpg
Jennifer Capriati def. Dominika Cibulkova 6-4,3-6,7-6(2)
Dominika had a great match yesterday and performed well today against Jennifer, but the more well-rested Jennifer beat a more tired Dominika. Fantastic play from both.
Kevin. Aug 18th, 2007, 06:10 PM (5)Jelena Jankovic vs. Alona Bondarenko
http://images.tsn.ca/images/stories/20061001/bod_40387.jpg
Alona Bondarenko def. (5)Jelena Jankovic 6-3,4-6,7-5
What a win for Alona! She has been playing great tennis at the Australian Open. All she had was game and all Jelena had was fight. In the end, Alona wanted it more. Congrats on your wins though Jelena! :yeah:

(2)Elena Dementieva def. Sania Mirza 4-6,7-6(1),6-4
Great Match by Sania!:worship: Holding a couple match points in the second, but couldn't convert, she is truly showing potential, but Elena's second set helped her in this match. Great Job Sania! :yeah: Good Luck Elena! :)

She now faces Anna Chakvetdaze for the spot int eh final. Good Luck. Alona, don't be sad, you had chances and you took them congrats on making it this far!
ilovepaszek Aug 18th, 2007, 06:50 PM Makiri wins the Beautys match to reach the semifinals of the Australian Open
http://www.tennisserver.com/turbo/images/pilotpen05/waite/Kirilenko6.jpg
Young Russian Maria Kirilenko advance to the semis of the Australian Open by defeating Sydeny champion and the number 1 seed and her close friend Maria Sharapova in three tight sets 6-4 3-6 7-6(4). "That's amazing and i am very sad because i don't want to beat to Maria(Sharapova), she is my close friend. We trained together yesterday and today we met each other in the match. I know this is not the real 100%Maria and i am very lucky. I think my forehand today is pretty good today and i also move well. And i am very scared now because next i need to face Serena, she is a powerful and great player. Many players scared of them because htey are just too powerful. But i think i will do my best. See you!!!"
Actually, Makiri is very lucky today. Because Maria(Sharapova) had 2 matchpoints in the final set. And Makiri fired up two winners in a row and won the match. Next she will face Serena WIlliams of the United States, she is the number 3 seed.

What a return, the Italian aren't very good in the first and the oppoments push them to a bagel. But then they change their game plan, they use defense mode and it works because both women are super baseliner. And they made Sania and Mary nothing to do with their volley. Flavia serve very well in both sets. And Tathiana had a good sportmanship. And at last they became the first team to reach the semifinals. Good luck!!

This is a exciting match, Elena and Tamira use their super footwork to make Na and Vera made too many unfored urrors. But in the 2nd set, Vera and na start to got ot the net more and they volley very well. And Elena and Tamira are very tired. Because Vera's vooley always made them run. But in the 3rd set Tamira use her super angled- backhands again and led 5-0. But Vera and Na fight back to 5-4. But at last 2 doubles faults from Na help Elena and tamira won the match. Good match. They will face Flavia and Tathiana in the semis.

Another good match from the Williams sisters. They use their powerful groudstrokes to defeat thee oppoment, but Elena and Nicole also have powerful groundstrokes. And the Williams sisters know Elena and Nicole didn't volley well so they use many drop shots and they work so they took the 1st set. And in the 2nd set. Too many unfored urrors from the Williams sisters. They really need to change their game plan. In the 3rd, they try a new tactic. They both come to the net to volley. And they volley well. At last 3 aces from Venus help them to win the match. Excellent peromence from the Williams sisters!!!

Good match. Dominika and Margalita use their good footwork to their oppoment keep running. And Margalita volley very well. Just except the 1st, Anna use her down-the-line shots to make Margalita move very difficult and Jennifer's topspin is just too good. But in the 2nd, Dominika's powerful strokes is very well. make Jennifer and Anna made too many errors. In the 3rd, they both compete well, in the tiebreak, Jennifer and Anna had leads in the beginning. But their game plan suddenely broke. And Dominika and Margalita just too good in the tiebreak. Good match!!!!!

Game,Set,and Match Serena Williams 2-6,6-3,7-5
Serena played a terrific match against a very confident Maria K, who slipped a 6-2,3-1 lead, but played a fantastic tournament defeating top seed Maria Sharapova in the last round. Serena is playing more and more consistent, I do not know how more consistent she can get. Surprisingly, after 2 semifinal finishes she is into her first career final. Serena :yeah: Maria

What a mtach, Dominika and Margalita really really do well in this match, beating the Williams sisters. They move extremly well and they put more and more pressure after the poor 1st set. Serena and Venus really want to win and they have a couple of matchpoints and they waste them. They really need to change their game plan. Not just power, doubles also need tecnique. But still good match from Dominika and Maka. Congratulation by reaching the final of Grand Slam.
One thing i want to ask Maka's coach.

Well well performence by the British/Austrian duo, they use their powerful backhands to beat the Italian team. Tathiana need a medical treatment in the 2nd set, so i think they really need to take care of themselves. Flavia is very good today. But Tathiana didn't feel good today. In the 2nd set, they have a lead, but after that injury. They suddenely fell. But Elena and Tamira use these time to get back their game plan, and they work. Congrats Elena and Tamira. They are really good. They got the wildcard at the last moment of commit to tournament. They are very smart of getting this wildcard. Because they are such a good team. Congrats!!!! Good luck in the final versus DOminika and Maka!!

What a way to end this tournament. First congrats to Serena for making it this far and bagelling Elena, she will be a champion, her time will come, trust me. Elena wins her first tournament, plus its a grand slam, plus she is our new world number one! After a final in Syndey, she was confident in every match she played here, and took out extrodainary players. Serena had a much easier time, not even dropping a set until her first set against Maria Kirilenko in the semifinals. Both deserved to win, but Elena had the edge especially at 5-0 in the third, she nearly choked a lead, but pulled it through. :bounce: :woohoo: :yeah: Elena. :woohoo::bounce::hug: Serena!

Dominika Cibulkova/Margalita Chaknashvili d. (WC)Elena Baltacha/Tamira Paszek 5-7 7-5 7-6(4)
This is probarly the match of the tournament, this match lasted for about 3 hours. In this Marathon match, Elena and Tamira really need to thni again because they have a lot of leads. And Dominika and Margalita fighted back. This match made the crowd very excited, and their drop shots is their new tactic today, they are really awesome. Elena today serve really well, all aces from the match are served from her. Totally 5 aces. That's very good. And Tamira today made a lot of unfored urrors. And Dominika's powerful groundstrokes are really work today. Margalita also very good, she can cover a lot of the court to make Elena and Tamira nothing to defense. This is really a good match. Congratulations to Dominika and Margalita

Margalita and Dominika win their 1st Title
Today, Chakhnashvili and Cibulkova have won their maiden title at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year. After beating the Williams Sisters in the Final, the Georgian/Slovakian team beat the sensational finalists, Baltacha/Paszek who had received a WC into the Doubles Draw. The score was 57 75 76(4) in a match which lasted more than 3 hours and in which Maka and Dominika showed their Fighting skills coming back in each set. They will play together in the next tournaments also, and hope to not lose the #1 spot in the Race they currently have.
