Welcome to Sydney Australia for the Medibank International (Tier II Torunament)

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/3/global/graphics/logos/sydney.jpg

This is the last chance to compete on Rebound Ace before the first Grand Slam of the year - The Austrlaian Open

Who is in good shape for the Austrlaian Open?
Who is struggling under the Aussie Heat?
Who will be a threat at the Australain Open?

All these questions will be answered her in Sydney this week; Good Luck to everyone competing.

Sydney is open to 16 countries competing but it needs at least 8 to go ahead. This is your last chance to practise on Rebound Ace before the Aussie Open and it is also our highest Tier tournament of the season so far so plenty of Race and Ranking points to be won so a good turnout would be nice here. Points deadline - Sunday 18:00 GMT

Sydney Tournament News and Preview

Preview

This week sees the start of Germany and Japans season on the WTT Tour. Sandra Klosel and Ai Sugiyama both have the hard jobs of starting of their respective countries campaign. They have both been given very hard draws to start of the season but I wish them the best of luck and of course their countries doubles teams aswell!

http://www.australianopen.com/images/players/wtak325.jpg

This week China is the numer 1 seed. And if things go terribly for Uzbekistan and Spain and Portoroz and they win the tournament they could find themselves with the same seeding position for the Australian Open. They will start their tournament against winner of the Nagy/Peschke match and their tatical and effective play can play havoc to the best of oppoents. The bottom half includes the evergreen Martina Hingis who heads a strong half and may have a good chance a final berth.

http://big5.southcn.com/gate/big5/www.southcn.com/sports/star6/pengshuai/200501181539_905725.jpg

The doubles draw has some of the countires top players teaming up to see who will turn out victorius. Sharar Peer and Anna Smashnova look strong but face the Chinese in the first round. Japan and Germany will be again hoping for good results but Germany may struggle against the experianced Slovaks. But nobody is talking about Benesova and Peschke form the Czech Republic and they are the counrty to support of you back the dark horse.

Tournament News

There is worry for Romania as they have not yet got to Sydney. It is rumoured they missed their flight from their training base from Los Angeles and had to fly to Burachest to have even a chance of a safe and early flight. I hope Romania get here on time and they manage to challange in the draw.

http://www.worldstatesmen.org/ro-21war.gif

Japan who start their season campaign this week seem hopeful for a good debut and season, said their Singles representitve Ai Sugiyama "I feel honored to play for Japan this week and we are very excited I hope to play my best. We are also excpecting good things from Nakamura and Morigami, they are playing very well together as a team"

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/global/photogallery/2005/goldcoast/f_18.jpg

This week we will have a new Rebound Ace champion as Uzbekistan are not here. Bets say that Switzerland are the favourties with Slovakia and China not far behind. If you are looking for good odds Israel have suprsingly low odds but a very good track record and are my outside bet.

http://217.204.10.75/img_bg/27294.jpg

As it was feared, Romania didnt get to Sydney and we hope they will make it to Melbounre instead. But this means the homecrowd will have somthing to cheer about as Australia will now start their season here. Alicia Molik has been given the hard task of playing the first match were she will face the number 3 seed Jade Curtis of Britain. "We hope the Aussies will come out and cheer us on tommorow" said Alicia "I am excited and nervous about starting of the season for my country but I hope for a good result" Welcome to the WTT Australia and Good Luck

For Sydney No As there are sixteen place available I just said that for Portoroz as I thought a lot of people will want to play hardcourt as it is their best surface

It would be helpful if Points were sent in ASAP as draw may not be made until Saturday; or whenever enough people have commited to tournament for it to go ahead.

Ive done draws for Australian Open (random.org has been very nice to somepeople - very bad to others :p)

Just to let everyone no there will be:

Singles: Like normal Your surface points into 3 sets.
Doubles: Same as Singles but i am not sure who will run it yet

But there will also be:
Mixed Doubles: Run by me 150 points (into either 3 sets or 13 games x 3 sets - Im yet to decide)

and

Singles Qualifying - All 24 countries have already been given one space each in the Singles Draw but that leaves 8 spaces. Instead of using 8 CPU players I will use 8 Qualifiers.

So the Qualifying draw will be 24 countries ( representitive each) + 8 WC to have a 32 player draw. The Quarter Finalist in the Qualifying draw will all get a place in the main draw. The format will be the same as singles to send in points.

I will be annoucing seeds today or tommorow along with draw. Until then you can only guess :p.

BTW Do you think post #81 is a good idea?

And I would like everyones opnion - Should Mixed Doubles be 150 pts into:
3 Sets? or
13 Games x 3 sets?

(I know which one I prefer - but Im not the one sending in points ;))

ALICIA IN THE FINAL AT HOME!

http://www.hinduonnet.com/2005/01/25/images/2005012501482101.jpg

The Australian talent won on his domestic tournament in the semifinal! Alicia liked to be playing always at home, but the cover was never perfect really for him. She was able to win a very tight match despite this.

"I'm so glad! This victory provides very much to me! In Australia - at home - in the final to be an incredible feeling. I dreamed about this always in my childhood."

Alicia played really good on a whole match. The score of the match was 76 67 76.

"Kveta very good player, true already not young person. All of the match was astonishing, all points were exceptionally tight. We struggled really for the match. The audience cheered me on very much and this gave strength in the heavy moments. The time of the match more than 3 hours, everybody believed it already we finish it never. Thanks for everyting."

Alicia will play tomorrow with Patty Schnyder. Good luck in the final Alicia!

ALICIA LOST IN THE FINAL

The surprise man, Australian Alicia Molik was not able to win his first tournament victory in a native environment.

http://p3.focus.de/img/gen/B/F/HBBFATraGsg_Pxgen_r_450xA.jpg

"I am very sad now, I know I should be glad, because I reached the finals immediately on my first professional tournament - defeating for example the 3rd seed - but I feel I was not able to serve the audience sufficiently."

"The front of the match was very tight yet, then 3-3 I managed to win Martina serve, and with this I can lead 5 games to 3. Then something happened in the air. Martina started playing well suddenly and came back.
http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2005/01/24/t8_wideweb__430x312.jpg

"The tiebreak was very tight again and I can only win 10-8, and I had to save some set poits.
In the second was hard too, but I lost it after I won the first game."

"I was in the the third set very disappointed in a set already and I lost the set very smoothly unfortunately and together with this the match too..."

The match score was 76 46 16.

"The audience was crazy, but I lost it. They were very disappointed, what I would not like. I say thank you for everything to them very much. I could not have been without them here."

http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2005/10/21/molik2_wideweb__430x293.jpg

The next stop will be the first Grand Slam of the year, The Australian Open, where Australia will be the 4th seed. [Alicia'll play here for Australia too.]

One of my favourite tournament the Australian Open. I would like to attain a good result and I hope for it the audience will help with this.

Thanks for everything Patch!

Switzerland Wins Sydney

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/501/1mhpic254.jpg

Martina Hingis def. Alicia Molik 6-7(8),6-4,6-1
Patty Schnyder def. Julia Glushko 6-2,7-6(0)
Patty Schnyder def. Daniela Hantuchova 6-2,6-3
Martina Hingis def. Aranxta Rus 6-2,6-1

Swiss Stars Martina Hingis and Patty Schnyder led their country to #1 yesterday on the WTT tour.

Switzerland loves playing on Rebound Ace so the decision to play Sydney over Portoroz was obvious. To start the week they played their major player Martina Hingis. She destroy the Dutch Aranxta Rus 6-2,6-1. Martina wanted to take a break so that she'd be fresh for the final so Swiss #2 Patty Schnyder took the stage. She blasted past Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova and then destroyed Israeli Julia Glushko in a second set tiebreak to put Switzerland in the final.

In the Final they took on crowd favorite's Australia with Alicia Molik on court. Martina tagged back in for Switzerland. Martina wasn't quite fresh for the final, and actually lost the first set to Alicia 6-7(8). After that the Swiss Miss took the second set 6-4. After that Alicia seemed to think it was over and it was. Martina won the final set 6-1 to give Switzerland the #1 rankings for the Australian Open.

Looking to the Australian Open. Switzerland is confident about it's chances except against 1 country, Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan defeated Switzerland in their past encounter. At the earliest Switzerland could draw them in the Quarterfinals, however they're hoping they don't meet until the final.
