Welcome to Gold Coast, Australia for WMFT Week #3, WTA Tour! Last week we saw newcomer Tamira Paszek take it to all the players. Will her strategy work again this week, or will the other players have something to say? I'd like to welcome Elena Likhovsteva to the tour, and good luck to everyone!

dementievavenus Aug 8th, 2007, 07:11 PM Lucie Safarova Upsets Bammer in Gold Coast
http://www.france-tennis.net/AA_IMG/safarova.jpg
Gold Coast, AUSTRALIA--Lucie Safarova went into the match with Sybille Bammer after surviving a three set victory of Li Na of China. Safarova could've been forgiven if she just rolled over. She was playing the world number one, and another left handed player, so she couldn't use her tricks. Bammer was on a roll as well, having won the first title of the season and getting deep into the draw last week. However, Lucie fought hard throughout the match, and it payed off with an upset of the Austrian 6/7(3), 6/3, 6/3.
The first set of the opening match for the seeded player went on serve for a while, until Safarova was broken at 4/4 after a bad unforced error from the young Czech. Safarova immediately broke right back, and continued her fight into the tiebreak. The top seed forced her play upon her younger counterpart, and rightfully so took the first set. However, Safarova's play had begun to pick up in that tiebreak, and Bammer knew that her opponent was playing better. Lucie got the crucial break in each set at the 3/3 game, and didn't look back. When the forehand from Bammer hit the tape, Safarova raised her hands in triumph as she found out she had upset the top player in the world.
"You know, it was great match. So many points could've gone her way. I'm so happy right now that I beat her. The crowd was amazing, and I had a lot of fun," Lucie said in her press conference. "I'm tired now, so I will rest and play my next opponent. Going up against Sugiyama, she took two love sets off of Jorgelina Cravero. Tomas phoned me with that news in Sydney, because he watched news all time. I definitely need to be at the top of my game."
Sugiyama upset another seed, beating Jorgelina Cravero, the eighth seed 6/0, 5/7, 6/0. At the time of the article, Tamira Paszek was also upset. The Austrian fourth seed lost to Amelie Mauresmo of France 7/5, 0/6, 7/5. Maria Kirilenko, the third seed was upset by British player Sascha Jones 6/0, 6/0 (the most shocking result of the day outside of the top seed's exit). Australia's own Samantha Stosur, the seventh seed, and Daniela Hantuchova comfortably walked through in straight sets 6/2, 7/5 and 6/1, 6/0 respectively, while Lindsay Davenport struggled with fellow American Ashley Harkleroad. The American sixth seed outlasted her opponent 3/6, 6/3, 7/6. Quarterfinal matches will be played tomorrow.
On the subject of Miss Lucie Safarova, Lucie said that she would start a modeling job during the Gold Coast tournament. Her clothes sponsor, Nike, is using her, Serena Williams, and Daniela Hantuchova to model some of the newer fashions.
"The clothes, they are great. I can't wait to wear them during the Australian Open. Serena's outfit is nice, and Daniela looks really...um...sexful...sexy...whatever the word is, she looks it. It was such a great experience to be standing next to those two," Lucie commented.

Sacha Jones in form
Sacha Jones has been playing reasonably well this tournament, making up for her piss poor performance two weeks ago and her average performance last week although she did beat the 3rd seed last week. Sacha Jones has only ever lost to the eventual Champion (shes the only player to hold this record). Next up is Lindsay Davenport, it will be a tough challenge!

Sacha Jones form continues
Sacha Jones has continued her run of good form to beat the 6th seed Lindsay Davenport 0 and 0. This is her third consecutive win following her wins over Tamarine Tanasugarn and third seeded Maria Kirilenko. This is the first time that Sachas reached the semifinal of a tournament, but it hopefully wont be her last. Next up is the highest ranked player left in the draw, her name is Daniela Hantuchova and shes a real battler. This is probably Sachas best shot at winning a tournament, lets all wish her well.

Sacha Jones wins battle of the babes
Could this be a fairytale tournament for Sacha Jones. After a poor start to the season she had produced some incredible form and rolled into the final after demolishing the only remaining seed left in the tournament. At the start of this tournament Sacha had no fans but as this tournaments been progressing her fanbase has surely picked up and she is certainly hopeful that there will be a few in the crowd tomorrow.

It all started off in Round One
We saw three absolute thrillers with Lucie Safarova, Amelie Mauresmo and Ashley Harkleroad all progressing through from these. Also six other ladies made it through this round reasonably unscathed. Sacha Jones and Ai Sugiyama made it through this round the easiest.
Round two saw all the seeds starting off their journey but with mixed success. Lucie Safarova did well to beat world number one Sybille Bammer in three sets and Amelie Mauresmo did equally well to beat last weeks champion Tamira Paszek. Also Ai Sugiyama beat the 8th seeded Jorgelina Cravero in three. In the top half of the draw only the 4th seed made it through with a fairly comfortable win over Edina Gallovits of Romania.
The bottom half saw the complete opposite. Daniella Hantuchova started off her campaign against Martina Hingis and this match lasted less than it took to write this article. Also 7th seeded Samantha Stosur won the points where it was most needed to advance. Lindsay Davenport who is playing here as the 6th seed needed a third seed tiebreak to get past Ashley Harkleroad. Sacha Jones was the only unseeded player to make it through when she showed some form to completely thrash Maria Kirilenko 0 and 0. So the Quarterfinals were all set.
It started off with Lucie Safarova winning her third straight match in three sets. Both players played very well and Ai supporters could be seen crying afterwards. The next match saw a big upset with Unseeded Amelie Mauresmo beating the 4th seed Anna Chakvetadze in two sets. This would mean that there would be an unseeded player in the final.
The third Quarterfinal was played between the unseeded Sacha Jones and 6th seeded Lindsay Davenport. The match didnt last long, Lindsay seemed tired from the match before. Sacha Jones into the semifinals and yet another seed out. The final Quarterfinal was the only one with two seeds playing in it and it was an absolute sellout. Daniela the 2nd seed started off poorly but managed to somehow make it to a third set tiebreak. Sam the 7th seed started off running but then lose her momentum but made it up in the third to reach a third set tiebreak. At 6-6 in the 3rd set it could have been anyones game, but the 2nd seed was just too good. She was the only seen to progress into the semifinals and at this stage she was the firm favourite to win the title.
Lucie Safarova started off the semifinals winning the first game to lead 1-0. She also lead 5-4 and was within a whisker of taking the first set, but Amelie fought back well to win the first set in a tiebreak. The second set was all Amelies, getting the first break only to loose it, only to get it back and win the next 4 games. Congratulations Amelie Mauresmo, she has progressed through to the final.
Sacha Jones was once again the underdog but she made it seem that she was the second seed. She played very well all through the match, not loosing a single game to win this match in fairly quick fashion. Congratulations Sacha Jones, she has progressed through to the final.
But who will win? Thats for another article
Kevin. Aug 11th, 2007, 02:47 AM Go Sacha!

Its the final countdown
Two unseeded players have played superb tennis all week to reach a fairytale final, in a few hours we shall see which fairytale ending will end in tragedy and which one will end in tears of joy.
Harley Radford (her coach and hitting partner) met up with her at training. "I've hitting the ball well all week, my serves been right up there with the best and (I've) been emotionally draining all of my opponents and it feels so good to make it onto the final day of the Championship" she says. She goes onto say "If I win today im upto number three in the world rankings which should give me a far easier draw than the one I had this week, although if I loose I will still be a top 8 seed. This makes me very pleased and gives me a heap of confidence leading upto the Australian Open in just over a weeks time".
Harley then asked her about what she thought of Amelie's performances this week. "Well what can I say, I don't think anyone was predicting that me and her would reach the final so I cant exactly say I've paid much attention to her game. I did however see her match against Anna Chakvetadze and well that was quite an upset, also I heard that Sybille Bammer lost so I thought the girl who beat her (Lucie Safarova) would maybe beat her.
He goes onto ask if theirs anything else she'd like to say to any particular players, fans. "Dont be upset if I double bagelled you, I actually had a bet with a few male friends that if I made the final they would wear 8 pieces of clothing minus 1 for every bagel I win - sadly I doubt the guards will let them in naked but I look forward to seeing them there in speedos or something anyway. To my other fans you totally rock, please come to my final today. Also come to the celebration party which is later, its at 9pm - im going, if I loose the final I'll just pretend to be Amelies girlfriend"
*shortly afterwards she blushes and asks if she can take back the last comment, however this is denied as I believe its in the public's interest

BWLH Aug 11th, 2007, 05:10 PM Ljubicic Wins First Title in Sydney
http://cimg2.163.com/sports/2006/10/16/20061016215912a27ee.jpg
Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia won his first title in the ATP tour of WMTF in Australia. He defeated American James Blake in the final in straight sets 6-3,7-5.
Since the beginning of the match,Ljubicic played well on every point, broke his opponent twice in the early set to win the first set.He continued his form in the second set but Blake stepped up his game and did not let the #5 player gain any break point. However,Ljubicic successfully broke his opponent's serve in the last game by hitting a forehand down the line. The match lasted for almost two hours.
"Well,I am really feeling good right now.Winning my first title here is definitely the best thing I could have asked for.Blake didn't play bad either but I am really playing my best tennis the whole week.I want to thank my coach, who gave me some advice before playing the match and I am trying to believe in myself when playing my opponent. And it really works!I just hope to play like this for the whole season."said the right-handed player from Croatia.
Ljubicic was the fifth seed coming into the tournament. He had a first round bye before meeting the lowest seeded player from Austria,Daniel Koellerer in the next round. The Croatian won the match 3-6,6-4,6-4.He then shocked the third seeded Rafael Nadal in straight sets 7-5,6-1 to claim his second straight semifinal spot. His semifinal opponent was Filippo Volandri of Italy, who stunned the first seed,Nathan Healey in his previous match. But the Croatian held off his gutsy opponent to win 6-3,7-6(0) before meeting Blake, who beat Fernando Verdasco(defeated #2 Marcos Baghdatis in the second round), in the final.
The ladies event in Gold Coast also just ended with Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo also claiming her first title by defeating Sacha Jones, who had given four double bagels in a row in the event before reaching the final.Mauresmo was also very satisfied with her performance for the whole week and hoped to carry her good form in the upcoming tournaments.
The next stop for ATP and WTA are Tier IV events, which are Heineken Open in Auckland,New Zealand and Moorilla Hobart International in Australia respectively.
