Welcome to the 2nd Week of the WMFT Tour! Last week, we had a spectacular debut with Sybille Bammer taking home the Sydney title. Will they repeat this week, or will the other players have something to say about it? Making her debut this week is Lucie Safarova, and I'd like to welcome her and wish her the best of luck!

Lovebirds and rookie tennis players Tomas Berdych and Lucie Safarova won their debut WMFT matches. Safarova defeated tour veteran and pin-up girl Maria Sharapova while Tomas Berdych squeezed a tough win out against Marin Cilic.
http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200601/r69001_191508.jpg
Lucie Safarova's journey to the second round in the ASB Classic was a tough, three set win over Maria Sharapova. Both girls were hitting the ball hard out on Court One and the crowd was appreciating the great tennis. Lucie hung tough with the Russian, but Sharapova fought her way to a break in the last game of the first set as she took the prize 7/5. Safarova was being blitzed in the second set 4/0 until she showed what she was made of and clawed her way back to 4/4. A long deuce game ensued on her serve and she finally held. It seemed to be the final blow for Sharapova in that set as Safarova clinched it 6/4. The last set was on serve, and the quality of tennis was extremely high. However at 6/6, Safarova managed to find the extra gear in the tiebreak and continued her mild upset in the tiebreak 7 points to 0. She will now play the eighth seed from Romania Edina Gallovits.

Tomas Berdych had less sets to battle, but still had as tough a match 7/5, 7/6 (5) against American Marin Cilic. Berdych held serve the entire match, and his opponent was broken once. The Adelaide crowd appreciated the great tennis the whole time, but it was Berdych's serve that got him out of trouble. He will play sixth seeded Croatian Ivan Ljubicic.

-Adelaide, AUS
On the men's side today, in Adelaide, Australia, 7 of the top 8 seeds advanced into the quarterfinals. The only upset came when Jonas Bjorkman (above) beat the 7th seed Lleyton Hewitt.
The top seed, Nathan Healey, playing in his home town, gave an impressive showing against Roger Federer, winning in straight sets 6-2 6-3. "I was playing great today", Nathan said, "Roger is a tough player, but my game was on today and I was able to continue my run from last week."
The other seeds had a bit more trouble, playing tiebreakers, or going to 3 sets, or both! The match of the day was between the 2nd seed Marcos Baghdatis and Russian Marat Safin. Marcos pulled through with a 2-6 7-5 6-3 victory, but even the first and third sets were close! "Wow, this was a great match" said Baghdatis, "I was pretty fortunate to get out of it. Even the first and third sets that looked like blow-outs were just a couple of points. I knew coming in Marat would be tough, but I'm happy to be into the quarters."
Also winning were #3 Juan-Ignacio Chela, #4 Rafael Nadal, #5 James Blake, #6 Ivan Ljubicic, and #8 Nikolay Davydenko. The men's quarterfinals will resume tomorrow morning, good luck to all of those still in the tournament!

-Auckland, NZL
The Tour Director announced today his picks for the ASB Women's Classic in Auckland. He chose newcomer Tamira Paszek (above) as the champion, and Maria Kirilenko of Russia as the finalist.
"Even though I chose Maria last week and she lost, I still believe her points are terrific and if she plays her game and it works, she should make it to the final."
"As for Tamira, I just had this feeling when I saw her stomp the 6th seed today. She's got a new style of play, and she's gonna take it to these top players."
In Auckland today, only 2 seeds advanced to the quarters. The top seed, Sybille Bammer, had a tough 5-7 6-4 6-4 victory over American Ashley Harkleroad, while the 4th seed Maria Kirilenko also had a 3 set win, beating Na Li 6-2 4-6 6-1. Woops, I'm so sorry! :o :tape: They got pushed back because you sent them so early... I didn't even see them!
The good news, for me anyway, you would have lost 1st round to Martina Hingis 6-3, 0-6, 1-6.
This won't happen again, I'll print your points off right now, I'm really sorry!

M.KIRILENKO [4] def. N.VAIDISOVA 6-1 6-2
The number four seed Russian Maria Kirilenko made it to the final of Auckland yesterday after an easy staright sets victory over Czech Nicole Vaidisova. In the first set Kirilenko raced into a 5-0 lead before being broken on her serve. However she bounced back to break Nicole to love to take the first set 6-1. The second set was more of the same with Kirilenko needing two oppourtunities to serve for the match but she aced her second match point to book her place in the final.
"I am very happy with my match yesterday" said Kirilenko "Everything went well for me so I am feeling very condfident and excited about the upcoming final" In the final Kirilenko is set to play Austrian Tamira Paszek who won her semi final against Lydnsey Davenport in three sets. "Tamira has played very strongly this week and it will be a very tough match. She has a great style of Tennis but I am hoping my can match up to hers"
"As it is my first final, I am very nervous but I am hoping I can just play my best and hopefully bring home the title which would be great in preperation for the Australian Open. But at the moment my attention is fully focused on todays final and I am going to give it my best shot and hope for a victory"

Ï♥╚!ÑÞ§å¥ Aug 4th, 2007, 07:05 PM Nathan Healey Takes 2nd WMFT Title
http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200601/r69903_194223.jpg
Nathan Healey (above) refreshes himself after his 6-0 6-4 win over Rafael Nadal
-Adelaide, AUS
Aussie Nathan Healey won today in his home country at the Next Generation Adelaide International. As the top seed and winner of Doha last week, Healey came in as the favorite and left with the title.
After losing his first set of the tournament in the semifinals, Healey came out strong and took the first set against Nadal 6-0. In the 2nd however, he got down a break and 4-2 but won 6 straight games to take the 2nd set, 6-4.
"I played great in the first set today," Healey said. "I thought I might be nervous being in the final in front of my home crowd, but everything went right. In the 2nd set I cooled off a little bit but was able to hang on."
"There wasn't really anything I could do," said Nadal. "I'm not usually one to be tired, but after 3 late night 3 setters in a row, I wasn't exactly fresh. He played great and I started a little slow."
When next week's rankings come out, Healey, as the winner of the first 2 WMFT events, will be ranked in first. He will be almost 200 points ahead of Marcos Baghdatis and Nadal will take over sole possession of 3rd.
The WFMT's ATP tour will move to Sydney next week.

Tennace Aug 4th, 2007, 07:17 PM Healey Remains Undefeated
Wins 2nd WMFT Title
http://www.australianopen.com/images/pics/large/b_healey_0112_01.jpg
Nathan Healey won his 2nd career title in WMFT after beating 4th seeded Rafael Nadal 6-0, 6-4 in the final.
"Winning one of my home country's tournaments feels amazing! It's so great to win this week. Adelaide is only a few hours from my hometown, so I am very happy to have won this tournament. I had a lot of confidence this week after winning Doha last week. I scouted my first few rounds of oponents well, and then just hoped for the best in the last few rounds against the tougher competitors. I am very happy right now."
Nathan is now 8-0 on tour after winning in Doha last week. When asked about the win last week, he was very shocked.
"I was not expecting to win last week at all. It was the first week of the tour and no one has any real expectations because no one knows how good the other plaeyrs are. I played my best though and won the tournament. It felt great, and getting a lot of matches under my belt helped me to do better this week for sure. I knew I needed to keep my same gameplan to get far this week, so I only made a few minor tweeks."
Nathan had a strong week beating many tough players to win the title. This title will increase his lead at the #1 ranking. With 2 tournaments left before the Australian Open, Nathan will be high on confidence and ready to win his home country's title.

http://images.derstandard.at/20070527/paszekl.jpg
WMFT newcomer Tamira Paszek celebrates after her 6-2 6-0 win over Maria Kirilenko
-Auckland, NZL
In the WMFT women's final today, Tamira Paszek continued her dream run by crushing 4th seed Maria Kirilenko. Excluding her semifinal set loss vs. Lindsay Davenport, Paszek lost only 6 other games, 2 in each match, en route to winning the 2nd WMFT Women's event.
"I really don't know how to explain what just happened," Paszek said after her win, "this entire week was amazing. I played my game and it worked, I guess that's the only explaination for it."
Paszek was broken only once the entire tournament, and it was in her 7-5 set loss in the semifinal against Davenport. "I served so well, not necessarily a lot of aces but I was just striking my serve so well. Hopefully I can keep it up next week."
Next, the WMFT women's tour moves to Gold Coast for the 3rd tournament. Paszek will take over 5th place when the rankings come out tomorrow, and Kirilenko will take over sole possession of 3rd.
Ï♥╚!ÑÞ§å¥ Aug 4th, 2007, 07:28 PM The rankings will come out tomorrow morning (early as I'll be gone all day) and the draws will be released when I get back. If I have time I may do both in the morning.
