"Today was a tough match. Coming out against a new player you've never played is difficult. Nicole was very tough and got a lot of balls back but she double-faulted at 5-5 in the tiebreak and from there I put the pressure on her and she couldn't fight as well as she did in the first. I'm not playing my best tennis right now, but I feel I'm still a good competitor and hopefully I can win a few more rounds. Right now I'm setting my eyes on the YEC"

Maria Sharapova fought off a matchpoint in the third set to defeat Serena Williams 1-6 6-2 7-6(3) to advance to another quarterfinal for the year at the Generali Ladies Open in Linz, Austria. In the first set Serena powered through the first set while Sharapova seemed asleep. However, Sharapova busted through the next set with powerful groundstrokes from the baseline. In the third both players were playing at a high level and refused to fold the match. Serena broke early and held a commanding 4-1 lead in the third before the Russian rallied back to 5-4. Down 5-6 and a matchpoint Sharapova hit a passing shot that landed on the edge of both lines at the baseline. Serena screamed to Sandra de Jenkin that the ball was out, but to no avail. In the tiebreak, Serena quickly let her mind take over and sprayed 5 unforced errors to essentially hand the match to Sharapova.

"Today was one of those matches where your mind is what it all comes down too. I'm not even sure if that ball was really in or not, but I guess it was good enough to where you couldn't tell. Serena is more talented than her sister, but she doesn't train enough, I think she could be higher ranked if she tried a bit harder. I'm not well adjusted to the indoor courts at all so it'll be interesting to see how I do against the better players, a quarterfinal was a good result for me and the rest will be bonus."

'I cant believe I have defended my only title. I have been in so many finals this surface but always came up short and didnt expect to get this far this week because I knew I had to win again to hold onto the number 1 spot which I only just got but to handle the pressure for once is fantastic.
