Solid Shahar Goes
Two For Two Down Under

Israeli Shahar Peer is making the best of her tour debut with a successful first tournament in Auckland, New Zealand. Making the most of a small draw, Shahar successfully navigated her way through two tough 3-set matches.

Facing Czech rising star and doubles partner Lucie Safarova, Shahar pulled out an impressive 6-4 3-6 7-6(2) win. In a very streaky match featuring patches of greatness from both players. Running out to a 4-0 lead, Safarova was serving and returning with authourity and conviction, and Peer was finding herself up against a wall.

She responded to the great play of Safarova by running off a streak of 9 straight games and found herself up a break in the second set, and on the way to an easy victory, winning serveral games at love.

However, when a set of cramps, and more importantly a case of the chokes set in, Safarova responded by running away with the second set, and went up two breaks in the third set, before Peer called on some of her greatest shots and fight.

Leveling the match at 5-all, the players were locked into a 4 game deadlock, with each game going to several deuces, before the match headed into a sudden-death tie-break. Once in the tie-break, Peer stepped up her game to another level and won 7 of the next 9 points to take tie break.

"I was really happy with the match result," said an elated Peer in her post-match conference. However, she didn't have much time to rest on her laurels, as she and Safarova had to head back out and face the formidable American Williams Sisters team of Venus and Serena, for a spot in the finals.

Coming out solid in the first set, and not dropping a game, but when fatigue set in, the Williams sisters dug in a took the second before Peers' serve began working again, and the Williams sisters had nothing left in the third, and "Peerova" as they are called, won the third losing only 10 points. Having already reached a final this week, Peer is happy to have accomplished a goal this early in the season.

"I made a final in my first tournament, that's huge," said Peer. Now looking to extend that great form into her next match for a spot in the singles final where she takes on Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia who demolished Serena Williams 6-0 6-4.

"I know I need to be at my best tomorrow," said and optimistic Peer. "But I know that if I do my best, and play my game, I've got a great shot of being in two finals this weekend."

Slovak Daniela Hantuchova went 2-0 in her first matches on tour.

She first took the court against American Serena Williams. Daniela cruised through the first set in just 24 minutes as Serena couldn't put her shots together. Daniela started out nicely in the 2nd set also, going up 3-0 before finally surrending 2 games to Serena, but then held onto her break to win the match.

After that she teamed up with another American Ashley Harkleroad to take on German-Russian team Kloesel / Myskina. Daniela continued her excellent form with Ashley (who also won her QF match d. Kloesel) in the first set. But it was Kloesel / Myskina who took away Daniela's first set on tour, as they dominated it not allowing them to win a single game. This continued until 0-3 in the third, but then Daniela and Ashley turned on their game again to sweep through the next 6 games to make the Doubles Final.

Tomorrow Daniela will face Israeli Shahar Peer in the Semifinals. It is sure to be a tough match, but Daniela has prepared extensively for it. She will also face Peer in the doubles final in the future who has partnered Czech Lucie Safarova.

Peer Sets Sights On Doubles Final

After an exceptional where Israeli Shahar Peer went 2-0, winning her doubles semifinal and her singles quarterfinal, she suffered a bit of a letdown; losing her singles semifinal match to Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova 7-6(3) 6-3.

"I'm definately dissapointed," said a melancholy Peer, who, despite her loss today, will debut in next week's rankings in the top 10. "I wanted to get to both finals, but for this week, I guess just the doubles final will have to do."

Tomorrow, Peer will have a shot to get some kind of revenge against Hantuchova, as Peer and doubles partner Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic will take on Hantuchova and her partner American Ashley Harkleroad, who also lost today in the singles semifinal to Anastasia Myskia of Russia.

"I'm just excited to be on the right path, said Peer, who said she was going to hit the practice courts and work on her ground game, specifically her backhand and her volleys that she felt let her down at key moments today. "It was a really close match, I just couldn't seem to hit the right shots at the right moments, but hopefully with practice, and some confidence, I that can be something that I can fix one day."

"Lucie and I are really excited to be in a final of our first tournament," said Peer. "Especially after losing that second set, we definatley weren't expecting such and easy go of it in the third set." Peer said that she feels that with a little bit of confidence, and a lot of hard work, she can reach the upper reaches of both worlds. "I don't see why I can't be number one in singles and doubles one day." If she keeps ups this kind of improvement, it won't be long before Peer has no peers in the tennis world.

Miss Daniela Hantuchova eased through to the singles final today after taking out Isareli Shahar Peer. Daniela will participate in both finals tomorrow, partnered with Ashley Harkleroad in doubles.

Daniela and Shahar played a brilliant match in the first set with neither able to take a major lead. After exchanging breaks at 5-5 to go to a tiebreak, it seemed like Daniela was in control. She quickly went up 5-0 in the tiebreak, Shahar finally got on the scoreboard making it 5-3, but then Daniela hit an ace and a beautiful return winner to close out the set. Daniela took that momentum into the next set going up two breaks to 4-0, before Shahar was able to get one break back. At 4-2, the tennis quality slumped a little and there were a couple breaks before Daniela finally closed the match out at 6-3.

Daniela will meet Russia Anastasia Myskina in the final. They have already met in the doubles competition with Hantuchova / Harkleroad edging pass Myskina / Kloesel in a 3 set match.

In the doubles final Hantuchova / Harkleroad will meet Peer / Safarova. Daniela just beat Shahar in the singles event.

Having met both previous opponents in the opposite events Daniela has some confidence going into the finals but knows it will still be a tough battle against such strong competitors.

Should Daniela win in the singles event, she would be ranked #2 since she is playing the lower Tier this week.
