Here at the Acura Classic in San Diego, the Gabriela Sabatini doll will be unveiled on Wednesday. The dolls retail at $1000, and all profits will be split and donated to Breast cancer and AIDS research. Gabriela Sabatini has reached a career high of 6th in the world on the WFTC Tour, and will play her first match against Bethanie Mattek, their H2H is tied at one apiece.

Sharapova Advances in San Diego!

Maria Sharapova advanced to the Last 16 today when she defeated Venus Williams 6-4 6-2 in 1 hour and 11 minutes. The Russian blasted several groundstrokes winners to keep the American on her heels. A motivated Sharapova told interviewers:

"I felt very good out there today, I was striking the ball really well particularly in that second set, I just ran away with it. She was playing well in the first too but I edged her out with some strong serving. I haven't been myself the last couple of weeks, I just wasn't putting forth the effort, a little tired from all the tennis, but here I feel great. I really want to win another title, and get my ranking up in the top 5, that would be great!"

Sharapova will face Nicole Vaidisova in the next round, for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Gold Coast,USA. Vaidisova won her first round match with a struggle . She barely could put a ball in the court today and felt it was luck that made her come through that match.

" I was barely hitting a decent forehand,it was either miles deep or miles wide. But im just glad im in the next round"

World number 15, Tatiana Golovin, creates another upset today when she defeated Elena Dementieva, the 4th seeded player this week, in a three sets battle of 7-5, 4-6 and 6-4. The young Frenchwoman will face American biggest player, Serena Williams. With the loss of Gabriela in the first round, Tatiana has a great opportunity to reach another SF in a Tier 1 tournament.
“I am really glad to pull out this upset. Dementieva is a great player and always fights. It was a very tough and intense battle. We were fighting on each point and we both wanted this win. This gives me a lot of confidence. I already beat the world Top players. It’s a great achievement and I know I can battle out with these girls. I will next meet Serena Williams. I never play against her and I don’t know who she is. I am very confident right now and I will probably beat her. Sabatini’s loss in the first round really opens my draw. I need to take this opportunity to reach semifinal. It should be very good to have some great wins under my belt before the US Open and if I want to participate at the YEC, I better kick my ass because I am really far from it. I am #11 in the race, but the difference, in term of points, is really big. So, I HAVE to reach semis!” said Golovin.

Sharapova Screeches Into San Diego Finals!

Maria Sharapova and her loudly unpleasent grunts worked their way into the final of the Acura Classic today when she fought past the fiesty Bethanie Mattek 6-4 4-6 6-4 to advance to her third final. Mattek who has been on a hot streak lately seemed to be frusturating her oppenents with her beer gut which was very distracting. However Sharapova held her nerve and her apetitite to fire past the American after 2 hours of humid conditions. In the final, awaits fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, the World #1. The two have met before and split the meetings, each with a straight set win over the other. Sharapova had this to say after the match:

"Well today was very tough, I mean I was very happy to win over that bitch Molik, she just hates me because she has a huge crush on Yuran and he wants none of her "unfeminine" qualities, instead he goes to me :shrug: Anyways after that battle, it was tough to get past Beth. She's rather a disgusting human being, at the player's party in Warsaw she farted about 16 times and belched frequently, I also know she has a smelly vagina. I mean come on, has she never heard of feminine wipes??? Anyways tomorrow will certainly be a battle against Sveta. She has been playing well all week. I think we could have an interesting battle, but I will need to go for all of my shots, I can't let her hang around or else she will show why she's #1!"

Sharapova Captures San Diego Title!

Maria Sharapova earned her third career and year to date title today when she defeated World #1 Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4 4-6 6-1 in the finals of the Tier 1 Acura Classic. Sharapova the 6th seed battled past her Russian compatriot defeating Kuznetsova in 1 hour and 50 minutes, striking a forehand down the line winner on matchpoint.

Sharapova broke Kuznetsova in the first game of the match and the two held serve until the end of the set when Sharapova converted her first set point with an ace going ahead 6-4. In the second Sharapova went up a break to go ahead 4-2 and it seemed she would be able to win the championship in straight sets, but Kuznetsova elevated her game to new heights and struck several groundstroke and service winners to rally and take the second 6-4 as well. In the third both ladies seemed spent from the tough first two sets, but Sharapova was able to find her second wind and earn the title, adding to her titles in Melbourne and Birmingham.

"I'm just SOO happy to win this title! Coming to San Diego I really felt good about my game, I think that when I'm motivated I'm one of the best, but lately I just haven't been putting in enough time. This win goes to show me that I can do great things, I just have to set my mind to it. Sveta played a great match and I know we were both wanting to win, but I just stuck to my game and I kept her on her heels. I was very pleased with the way I kept myself in the third set. I felt spent after the second and my mind was very fragile but I just kept winning games and eventually the title was in sight and I was able to get there. I would like to thank everyone who made this tournament possible and all my friends, I can't wait to come back next year! Thank you!"
