It was a sad day for all Aussies as the only Australian player, Alicia Molik lost her first round match to Gabriela Sabatini from Argentina 3-6 6-3 0-6. After this match Alicia said: "It was not a good today for me, it was very hot and I had troubles with my shoulder so in third set I couldn't serve well and made 12 DFs but I hope I will be able to play the doubles match when we meet again."

Say what? Kim Clijsters continued her monstrous run in the Beijing Olympics. The unseeded Belgian started slowly in her quarterfinal match. The combination of nerves and unforced errors slightly unhinged Clijsters. However, in the end Clijsters' defensive game was too much for American Bethanie Mattek as the Belgian dominated in a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Overlooked at the start of the tournament, Clijsters has looked like the best player in the field. She has yet to lose a set. No matter what happens in her semifinals against current no.1 and reigning Wimbledon champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, Clijsters is assured of playing for a medal.

"I'm totally at a loss for words. I mean, I didn't expect to get this far. Bethanie obviously has a similar game than I do, but today things were just clicking for me. This is the first time I've ever felt that I was in control. I'm fitter, more dedicated and hungrier. Tomorrow, it's going to be tough. Sveta has been the number one player forever, it seems. So, she deserves respect. I've come this far, and losing is not on my itinerary."

The Beautiful one, the Darling of Argentina, who else could we be talking about other than Gabriela Sabatini? Sabatini arrived at the Olympics with one thing in mind; win a Gold medal for Argentina. Currently ranked nine in the world meant that she would not be seeded, and she faced the daunting task of hard serving/hard hitting Alicia Molik of Australia. Sabatini passed the test 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.

Then came French Open Champion and World # 2, Ana Ivanovic of Serbia/Montenegro; again Sabatini in three sets, 5-7, 7-5, 6-0. Safely into the quarterfinals, Sabatini almost blew her match against Tatiana Golovin of France, blowing a 6-3, 5-3 lead, but recovered nicely to win 6-3, 5-7, 6-0.

Sabatini is now in Medal contention. A victory over Elena Dementieva of Russia in the semis will assure her at least a Silver medal, if not Gold; but a loss would put her in a Bronze playoff match against the loser of the other semifinal in the upper bracket where Wimbledon Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, will battle Kim Clijsters of Belgium. Sabatini said" I won't lie; I want the Gold medal, that’s all I am thinking about. I like playing Elena; hopefully I can best her again."

Unseeded Aussies, Alicia Molik and Samantha Stosur have progressed to the semi-finals of the doubles after coming through after a two set victory over no.3 Lindsay Davenport and Ashley Harkleroad from the USA, 6-4 6-4.

The Australian duo needed over 2 h to beat the US Team in a really close quarter-final match.

The match opened steadily with all players assertive and in control of their games and with the first set going to serve, a lightning fast cross-court return of serve by Stosur enabled the pair to pocket the set 6-4.

In the second set it was all going to a TB but at 5-4 Alicia and Sam broke Lindsay hard serve with great instinctive volleying at the net by Molik and safely secured a place in the semi-final.

In semis they will face no.2 Golovin/Mauresmo from France.

Unseeded Belgian Kim Clijsters can make her dream come true Sunday afternoon when she takes on unseeded Argentine Gabriela Sabatini for the Olympic gold medal.

The unheralded Belgian finally lost a set, but managed to upset top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-3 in the semifinals. Clijsters expected a test from her opponent. She managed to prevail despite losing a 5-1 lead in the second set.

However, Clijsters showed enough mental resolve and her improved physical fitness in the third set. She appeared the fresher of the two, using her retrival skills to her advantage in securing the hard fought victory.

Whatever the result, Clijsters insists she'll be happy no matter what the result is.

"Coming into these Olympics, I thought, 'Quarterfinals are good enough for me.' I mean, I thought I could do well. But to realize a dream of winning a medal - possibly a gold medal at that...wow! Sveta is a legend, you know? I have beaten her before she won all these slam titles. So, to beat her is special for me. She should be congratulated. Now I have to get ready for Gabriela. She is playing some great tennis. She's the fittest and craftiest player here. Her high spins and dead ball have knocked everybody down in the third set. So, I hope I'm able to just deal with it and hopefully come out on top."

Gabriela Sabatini has defeated Elena Dementieva before, but todays victory was extra sweet because it means Sabatini will get a chance to win a Gold medal here the the WFTC Olympics. Gabriela won her semifinal over Elena Dementieva in streaky fashion. Sabatini jumped to a 4-0 lead, only to lose the next six games to drop the set 4-6. Sabatini led 5-1 in the second set, only to see Dementieva club her way back to 5-5. From the tibreaker on, Sabatini shine as she took both the tiebreaker and the final set 6-0. Kim Clijsters will be her opponent in the final after an upset win over Wimbledon Champion and World Nunber # 1, Svetlana Kuznetsova, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. Sabatini said of the match " I believe my head to head is 2-1 me, but you can throw that out of the window. Kim seems to be in devastating fashion, she's hitting the ball hard and making very few errors. I have to try and keep her out there as long as possible with my variety and net game, or she'll clock me."

BEIJING---


Kim Clijsters simply put own dominant stamp on these Beijing Olympics. The previously unheralded and often injured Belgian turned in her most dominant performance yet. She needed only 1 hr, 3 minutes to beat tough Argentine Gabriela Sabatini 6-1, 6-2 to claim her biggest title ever - the gold medal.

Clijsters' combination of athleticism, defense and powerful shotmaking seemingly wore down her opponent.

The 23-year-old Bree native took the first four games of the first set, before Sabatini held. Clijsters seemed more dialed in, attacking the Argentine's serve, eventually breaking to love to claim the first set. She hit 14 winners to Sabatini's 3, while making only 4 errors.

Usually at that juncture, Clijsters would surely let down, right? Not so. She duplicated her 4-0. Despite an error-filled game to lose her serve at love, and a Sabatini hold, Clijsters sensed it was her moment and blitzed through the last two games.

Clijsters converted on her first match point with a forehand winner off a short return. The little girls emerged as she dropped her rack in disbelief and giddily hopped along the baseline before soaking in this most triumphant moment.

The players exchanged pleasantries at net, with Miss Kim taking her bow in the center of the arena.

"I'm just tongue-tied out there. By far the best match I've ever played. No question. I never expected to win the way I did. I don't know how to explain it. Gabriela's a tough customer, so I knew I had to play at my very best. She had a great tournament and a silver is something to be proud of."

"I'd also like to think Yuran for running a great tour and these Olympics. He never said a negative word about me despite my trifling ways. I'm fit and focused now, so you're going to be seeing a lot of me in the near future."

Could this triumph be the kind of career altering win that will make Clijsters a force on tour? Or will she slide back to obscurity off a fluke run? Clijsters brushed off such thought in her post match conference.

"Oh, hush! I'm not even thinking about that. Honestly, I'm in awe of this medal around my neck. It's glowing and so am I. I think I'll be fine. This does bring me confidence about the hardcourt season. But, I'm too busy thinking about what brand of vodka to buy to celebrate! That's all."
