Czech player, Iveta Benesova, decided to retire from Birmingham event. After Martina Hingis, a talented player and Iveta’s doubles partner, retired from the game it’s now turn for Iveta to do it.
"Martina retired last week and I thought about it a long time ago and I am actually thinking of doing it too. I haven’t played well lately and I am not enjoying playing on this tour anymore. Actually, I really don’t know what to do for my future career. I have many thoughts in my mind. I have a lot of friends here but in another way, I don’t enjoy playing tennis now. I am just bored to loose and loose. I know I need to work on my strategy but I don’t know what to do. Each time I try a new tactic, it never works. I am not enjoying training with my coach and try to work on my game now. I just don’t want to pass time on this now. For this week, I am retiring from single event. I am going to play with Maria in doubles for sure. I don’t know if we are going to be good together and if I am taking the risk to play with her. I mean, if I play 3-4 events with her and I decide to retire forever, it would suck for Maria. Either way, I am just going to think to my future here and I won’t play any grass single tournament that’s sure. I don’t want to make pressure on Tour director or whatever." said Czech player.

Defending champion and world N°1 Svetlana Kuznetsova withdraws this week from Birmingham due to fatigue, according to close sources. She has planned to play next week in the Netherlands or the week after, in Eastbourne.

This season, the Russian has not won a single title despite reaching the final 3 times. But in her career, Svetlana has won 8 titles in singles (all last season), including 2 slams (Wimbledon and the US Open), and 11 titles in doubles with Amelie Mauresmo (including RG season 1 and the US Open). She has spent 17 weeks at the top of the rankings, which is the WFTC record so far. See you soon Sveta!

'Its great to be back on a surface I feel comfortable on. I hate the clay - I find the surface slow and makes me move to much. Where as on the grass the points are shorter and I can attack more. Timea has a nice game but doesnt have a major weapon and that hurts her but she is young and can improve. I hope I can go far in this event to get fully prepared for Wimbledon and get that title!'

Sharapova Wins DFS Classic!

Maria Sharapova won her 2nd WFTC title today when she defeated Tatiana Panova in a monumental comeback, seeing her revive from a 6-0 5-0 40-0* deficit. Panova, who had been playing astonishing tennis double bagelling her last two oppenents, seemed to be on her way to another. She came out of the gates swinging cracking 34 winners and 6 unforced errors at 6-0 5-0 and after earning triple championship point, decided to go all out on a return shot. At firsrt it appeared the shot was good, but it was out and no chalk was seen in the air. Panova argued with the chair umpire for 4 minutes yelling and screaming. Panova was defaulted one of her other championship points. Then Sharapova nailed an ace to save the final one. After that Panova seemed to lose her swagger giving up the next 7 games to lose it 7-5.

In the third, Panova composed herself to go up a double break for a 5-1 lead. But this time Sharapova cleanly came back, blistering forehands and backhands from the baseline, keeping Panova 6 ft behind her side. Sharapova saved two more matchpoints, in one of Panova's service games. Eventually, the Siberian had worked her way back to 5-5 and then 6-6. In the tiebreaker, it seemed Sharapova had Panova completely out of sorts. The smaller of the Russians had hit 4 unforced errors combined with two winners from Sharapova to hand the lead to Maria 6-0. But the nerves of Sharapova let Panova come roaring back saving five championship points of her own. On Sharapova's last chance she belted an ace to end the match, shocking both herself and Panova, who stood at the return spot for a few moments, not realizing the match was over. Final score: Sharapova def. Panova 0-6 7-5 7-6(5). With the win, Sharapova earns her second title, her first being the Australian Open earlier this season.

"What can I say, I always seem to get myself in these kinds of matches! Well at first I couldn't do anything, I mean I wasn't playing great but Panova was playing on fire. I mean, I don't think even Roger Federer could've stopped her for the first half of the match. Honesetly, I thought for sure it was over at 6-0 5-0. I was crying on the changeover, just cursing myself for this horrible match, and then she lost it, I kind of got lucky to hit that ace and then the next thing I knew it was one set all. In the third, it was like...Oh my God this isn't happening again...what does a girl have to do to get a break from Panova! She was charging the net and at first I couldn't cope with it. I think once she started winning those points, her confidence came back. Luckily, I was somehow able to come back again. She had some nerves, I had some nerves, we both saved 5 matchpoints. It was a very very very close match. I will not forget this week and this final. I would like to thank everyone, the tournament, the players and my friends especially Iveta, and the crowd and tournament director (whom I will have some fun with tonight! :hehehe: ). Storms of controversy cloud over the final of the opening grass court event here in Birmingham after the number eight seed Maria Sharapova defeated fellow Russian and third seed Tatiana Panova in three sets 0-6 7-5 7-6(5) after being 6-0 5-0 down. The problem came after a bad call on match point for Panova went in Sharapova after pleading with the umpire who agreed with her. Panova couldnt believe it and ran to his chair to protest but to no avail as he kept his eyes on the chest of Miss Sharapova. Panova a foot shorter than Sharapova and alot more women in terms of her body shape demanded the tour director to the court but he after a chat to Sharapova where she whispered something in his ear agreed it was Sharapova's point. Panova lost it completely and went on to lose the set with out picking up another game. After regaining her thoughts she fought hard in the final set but again Sharapova came back and won the title.

Panova said after the match 'Talk about using sex to get far in life. Maria is a tall blond women who will put out for anyone and the men around the tour are all over her. I cant help being short and a little on the large side. They have hurt what she has call me in the past and still they think its ok to help her. It was embrassing to see her beg for a point off them. The tour was scared that I was going to dominate the tour after winning 6-0 6-0 in my last two matches and thought that I deserved to be brought down because I dont have the right image to be the best in their eyes. Well I am not going to retire - I am going to prove them wrong and raise to the top - people like to see normal girls win not models! Sharapova has already admitted at her press conference than Yuran the tournament director will have fun with her tonight all becuase he gave her a point. Its awful!! Next time I face her she better be careful because I am ready for that bitch'
